Alexander Hamilton was born on the island of Nevis around January 11, 1755. As a young man, Hamilton left the Caribbean to further his education on the British American mainland. He quickly became involved in the Revolutionary cause, and ultimately became a key Founding Father of the United States. He actively supported educational opportunities for others, notably for African Americans and Native Americans, by helping establish the African Free School system and the Hamilton-Oneida Academy in New York.
