Detailed Reviews
We stayed here for 3 nights and really loved this place. Vasilis, your host, is a genuinely nice guy, and nothing is too much trouble for him. It’s set back about 100m from the main car park in the village (our only grumble is that a sign near the car park would have been helpful in finding Saxonis) and around you are various cosy little alleys and narrow back lanes with cafes and restaurants. All are walkable. Saxonis itself has a modest number of rooms with a very pleasant covered terrace which enables you to breakfast and enjoy views of the stunning mountains. Very quiet at night and great for stargazing.
Vasilis is a mountain guide and is hugely knowledgable being one of the first hosts in the village years ago. He is full of ideas and suggestions about walks, day trips and things to do. Papigko is a great location for exploring the Vikos Gorge but you don’t have to be superfit to enjoy it - lots of places to drive to, or shortish walks to neighbouring villages.
All in all, a lovely place to stay, and Vasilis is such a warm and personable host.

A lovely traditional guesthouse in the picturesque village of Papigo in the Zagorohoria.
The owner Vasilis has done his best to retain the old and authentic charm of a village abode - the old entrance, the well maintained courtyard area with the most beautiful colour of roses and flowers, the stone rooftops with the traditional stone chimneys, the lovely sitting area outside with a view of the mountain peaks...
And we loved our cosy and clean room, with a lounge area on the ground floor and the bedroom upstairs.
The breakfast was served outside on the terrace, by a very friendly lady, in the company of a very cuddly , friendly cat.
From the moment I called Vasilis to make a reservation, I knew that I had found the accommodation we were looking for. He was so helpful and easy going that I recognized in him the soul and heart that is necessary for every hotel or guesthouse in order for it to be a place with staying at. I have often said this. We have stayed in supposedly good hotels but there was no soul in them and the lack of a soul makes all the difference for me.
So, yes, if you are looking for a lovely cosy guesthouse, look no further, Saxonis Houses is your place.
Vasilis is also the man to ask for any recommendations about where to go and what to do. He knows the area well as he often leads hiking tours.
For those of you who are interested in hiking, this must be paradise, with so many trails to follow - through the Vikos Gorge, up the mountains, down to the Voidomati and Aoos rivers, up to monasteries, over old stone bridges.
One of those places we already look forward to coming back to.

The combination of this charming house with individual rooms, the great breakfast (prepared by Anna) with the experienced tour guide Vasilis is unique. The atmosphere is like staying at friends, you will get lots of advice where to go and what to do and if You are unsure ask Vasilis to guide You on a tour. Regardless whether you have a special wish for breakfast or need a pickup at the end of a oneway hike - Vasilis and Anna will do everything to make it happen.

What can we say? Our stay at Papigo was made even better as we walked in!
A pretty, traditional room was waiting for us. The décoration of the room was respectful to the history of the houses and the region. The breakfast was traditional, home made and varied. It changed a bit everyday, so we tasted a lot of different jams, sweets and pies.
The owners are very helpful, and not only about the basic questions. If you are a sporty mountaineer, they will guide you in the best way possible, helping you navigate the mountains and th gorges. Plus, they can give you little home made treats for your backpacking. We will try to come back next year for the race!

Turned up tonight for a booking made in February for a large twin, with patio and kettle booked via Booking.com. Was given a standard double which was shabby, small, with no patio, no view, no kettle. Things took a turn for the worst when I explained that it was not what I had booked or paid for. The owner Vasilis simply tried to bluff his way out of it by lying and patronising me, telling me that it was what I had booked and that all the rooms were the same price.
He became uncooperative and left, becoming uncontactable. Vasilis later returned and became agitated when my partner called him a cheat and a liar, insisting he leave the property. The owner repeatedly made the false claim that all rooms were the same price and that the pictures online were not of the actual rooms booked.
It is apparent from earlier reviews that the practice of room switching is not uncommon at Saxonis House. This was not an unfortunate accident.
It took over an hour of unpleasantness to secure a refund and book somewhere else. If you do book at this property be prepared to be put into a room that wasn't what you reserved, with no explanation and no apology, full in the knowledge that the owner is doing it to line his own pockets.

Response from Vasilis Nasiakos, General Manager at Saxonis Houses
Responded Aug 4, 2022
You were rude, called us names, to the extend that other guests asked you to leave. We have around 200 5* reviews and only yours, which is double, is 1*. This might indicate something. There are no other reviews indicating that we follow “practices” that you suggest. Room pictures are indicative for small, traditional B&Bs as no room is the same, and we were still happy to give you the room you wanted the next night but you didn’t want to discuss, you just wanted to swear to us.

Saxonis was the perfect accommodation in the beautiful village of Papigo. The owner, Vasilis, immediately felt like an old friend of ours and kept in touch with us even after we left his property, making sure we got our covid test arranged. We asked him to pack breakfast for us and he waited for us at 6 in the morning with fresh coffee and breakfast all packed up and ready to go. The rooms are nice, clean and cozy and the hotel is situated in a beautiful corner of the village. Highly recommended!

We stayed at Saxonis Houses for 12 nights (our initial booking was for 5) and i can still say this was not enough.. especially after meeting our host Vasilis, who treated us literally as family. His deep knowledge of the mountain and his “tip from the local” attitude gave us the chance to experience all the nearby major trekking paths. I highly recommend contacting him directly, to arrange private guided tours in the nearby mountains. The rooms are spacious, we even used the fireplace to cook and the terrace view is overwhelming. So sorry we had to leave paradise :(

I can't believe this place has even one bad review, I thought it was amazing. It is perhaps a little basic if you are used to luxury hotels, but I would rather stay here any day. Things that are great: the rooms are really cozy, and the bed was comfy. The breakfast I enjoyed, with some traditional Greek cheese and jam pies. There was a room available for us to use in the evening, where we made a fire and chatted with the owner whilst the children played games. And Vasillis himself is a massive bonus, very friendly and extremely knowledgeable. I would absolutely come back and stay again.

Classic charming hotel located in the quaint village of Papigo in the Zagorochoria region. Papigo is a great place to wander around and take photos in this picturesque part of the world. The Saxonis House is a small hotel with friendly owners. Rooms are very comfortable and complete with decor of the times. Great location to spend a couple of days while you explore other villages and things to see nearby. Traditional breakfast is included and there are several dining options in the village. Everything is walking distance.

A lovely, romantic place to stay for a hiking trip in Papigo. The owners deliver a beautiful breakfast each morning with a view of the Papigo Towers--during our visit, the offerings included freshly baked pastries, rice pudding, and a local cheese pie. They also helped us to plan our hikes and thoughtfully arranged for transportation. We had an amazing time in Vikos-Aoos thanks to the Saxonis Houses.

Hello Pensa, this answer might be overdue, but I will answer just in case! We offer from our B&B shuttle rides from Ioannina to Papigo but you can also hire a taxi for about 60e one way. Hope this helps! Vasilis
Papigo is in an area called Zagoria, in nothern Greece, and is part of a conmplex of some 40 beautiful, traditional stone villages scattered arount the Pindus reserve mountain peaks - a virfin, wild mountianous area. It is about 6 hours drive from Athens and 2,5 hours drive from Thessaloniki.
