We loved our 3 nights stay in this hostal. The room was comfortable, spotless clean and there is a kitchen at disposal in the nice common area. The location is just incredible, surrounded by vineyards, at 20’ walk away from the city’s agitation, and very practical to do the astronomic tour with Hugo (really nice guide!) Marco, the owner, has been amazing with us : he is very generous and easy to talk with. We wished we could’ve stayed more !
We decided to stay here one night in order to participate more conveniently in the astronomical program (reviewed separately under "Centro Astronomico Alfa Aldea"). The room is basic but comfortable enough for one night with a basic though not very well ventilated bathroom. The room itself I'd rate just 3 stars and the breakfast maybe 2 (some fresh fruit, but instant coffee with milk powder and bread with margarine). But the owners are very nice and friendly, the ambience nice in the middle of vineyards in a rustic setting close to but outside the pleasant town of Vicuña. Upon request, they did take out their solar telescope just for us, which was a bit of work (since there was no solar activity, we only saw an orange disk). It's pleasant enough for a night, though you can participate in the nighttime telescope viewing as a separate activity.…
Hostal Alfa Aldea has high quality telescopes and generous night time viewing for everyone joining their tour/event. While their guides are amateur astronomers, their knowledge far exceeded ours and that of our fellow tourists. To top it all off - in addition to delicious wine and some snacks - our guide Gabriel, took pictures of the moon through the telescope with all our cell phone cameras. The next morning we were also treated to a look through their sun-telescope - again cell phone of our star pictures included. The Hostel has very nice rooms and I recommend staying over night. Good breakfast too.
We were there as a group, to do some night observing, and the hosts were fantastic! Not only did they serve us a feast + their own wine, but they also treated us to a planetarium show. The site has a fantastic view of Cerra Pachon, with the SOAR, Gemini Sourth, and LSST observatories. The night-time observing was pretty good, with only a little bit of light pollution from the nearby town and headlights from a few passing cars. I wish I could be there for the solar eclipse in 2019, but it's already booked out. Don't miss this place!
This is a special please because it is located on a family run vineyard--peaceful and beautiful. We liked it because we felt in the country but convenient close to town. We had our own car which made getting there easy (long walk from town). The owner is lovely and speaks a little English. The rooms are adequate as is breakfast. They run a astronomique "program" we attended. Hugo, the guide, was excellent. They only take cash. It's cold in the mornings and night. Bundle up.
