Quite simply the best tonic for anybody in need of rest and relaxation and somewhere perfect to mark a momentous occasion or just to have a wonderful holiday. Six of us went to celebrate over Christmas and New Year and it exceeded all our expectations. We loved the people, the food, the land and sea activities and fell in love all over again with the turtles, sharks and underwater world and the crab and bird-life above ground!! This was our third visit to the Maldives and closest to nature that we have found yet…true Robinson Crusoe paradise without the glitz and glamour of a flashy resort. Thank you to the GM, Shaugy and all his team (including Chandana & Arjay behind the scenes.) He has an excellent brigade of Chefs so the food is always top notch. We also loved our waiter Ishmael, Milan in the bar, Claudia & Ricardo (& Sue) at Divebase, Saif and KD (who can turn his hand to DJ, drummer, diving, sports and more!) and all the team on the island who we played volleyball, badders and Christmas Day beach football with. The wonderful Balinese therapist was an A1 masseur. It was worth saving for 3 years to take my nearest and dearest for my 50th and we’ve all vowed to plan to return as soon as we possibly can! Thank you Makunudu…please stay unspoilt. Love from the Pull family xxxx

This will be a long, detailed and honest review of our experience staying on Makunudu for 1 month. The reviews we read were on the whole very positive although some people did have complaints about the condition of the bathrooms, the food not being varied enough and one or two staff members not being friendly or professional. We can say that all the staff were very helpful and professional and the food was incredible and very varied. Yes the bathrooms could use a bit of redecoration but this is not a high end 5 star resort, this is a relatively basic and not overly expensive resort which prides itself on being more down to earth and natural in general. If you are looking for perfection and everything being spotless and in perfect condition and all the surroundings to be immaculate then there are other resorts that will offer you that but at much higher prices and without the rustic feel of Makunudu. We booked our 1 month holiday through Paula at Magic Of Maldives in the UK. Paula was verty helpful and organised everything. We were met at Male airport and travelled the 45 minutes on the speedboat to Makunudu. I don’t like boats and it was a bit bumpy but bearable. On arrival the first thing we noticed was that none of the photos and videos online really do justice to the beauty of the island. It is far more colourful, the sea more blue, the atmosphere more high end than we expected. We were met by the management and given a drink and then lunch before going to our room. The rooms were updated a few years ago and are in good condition, pretty clean and the bed is excellent. The bathrooms could use some paint and some touching up but are certainly good enough. There is a mini bar, a ceiling fan and good air con. The lighting is very good and creates a good atmosphere. The man cleaning our room was very nice and did a good job daily including a quick tidy up in the evening. All the rooms lead directly onto the sea just a few meters away. There are a few birds that tweet quite loudly all day long, starting at 4am so I suggest some earplugs may be useful! We did struggle with the mosquitoes but it had rained a little bit so it may have been worse than usual. The food was exceptional on every level. The breakfast buffet is quite varied, fruit, pastries, eggs, breads, cereals etc. The restaurant is open air on the sides and looks out onto the sea and the views are lovely. The waiters and chefs are professional and friendly. The head chef is a genius and created an amazing variety of dishes daily and almost never repeated them in the 1 month we were there. Lunch is also a buffet, lots of choice, meat, fish, salads, vegetables, rice, potatoes, vegetarian dishes, multiple deserts. All the food is of a high standard and delicious. Every day we were amazed by the choice and quality. Supper is a set menu with a few choices and once a week there is a barbecue and buffet and also a Maldivian night buffet followed by music and traditional dancing. There is always music from speakers at one end of the restaurant by the bar but in general it is not too loud and not too annoying! The choice of music was occasionally unsuitable for a quiet romantic island. We were staying full board so had all 3 meals included. Our waiter Shaveer was with us for the whole month and was great fun and very helpful. Sunil the food and beverage manager was very professional and amusing and helpful as well. The bar staff were very friendly too. Many of the them have been on the island for years, as has the head chef. The receptionists were all very helpful and nice. All in all the staff were great. We had our 2 year anniversary of when we first met and I asked for a table on the beach for dinner and a small cake to be made and the table was decorated beautifully and the cake was amazing. They even made a beautiful decoration on the bed for the occasion. Kirsty went snorkelling alone and with the help of KD who is a lovely guy at the watersports/dive center and then learned to dive with the help of Crystal and Claudia and that was a very positive experience. All three of them are great people. The house reef is very good with lots of amazing fish and turtles and sharks to be seen. We took a private boat to the sandbank 15 minutes away and that was a lovely experience. The waters at Makunudu are clean and clear and warm. You can walk around the island in about 10 minutes. It is quiet and even though the island was fully booked at times, you never see many people except at the restaurant. We stayed on the south side of the island which is calmer and less windy and we were very secluded and had the beach to ourselves most of the time. In the evening at about 6pm we had a drink at the sunset bar watching the sun go down. There are a few wooden swings around the island which are good photo opportunities. At about 9.30pm they feed the sharks which is an interesting experience. The weather was a bit mixed which is unusual in December, it was a bit windy and wet at times but there were plenty of hot sunny days as well. It was never cold of course! We had several massages at the spa and the therapist was excellent. The best things about Makunudu are the unspoilt nature of the island, the relaxed atmosphere, the food, the staff and the underwater experiences. It is mainly a place for couples and people looking for peace and quiet, there is no pool and no activities for children so that means there are seldom children there. The managing director Mr. Shaugy is a lovely man who speaks excellent English and is very laid back and friendly. All in all the island is amazing and we did not want to leave and we are planning our next visit. We have stayed at a much more luxurious resort in The Maldives but we preferred the rustic charm and the food at Makunudu. The cost for 1 month at Makunudu was the same as 10 days at the high end luxury resort we stayed at last year. Thank you to all at Makunudu and we will be back as soon as possible. Stayed at Makanudu resort for 5 nights. It was our first trip to Maldives and the resort certainly lived up to its reputation and our high expectations. The setting is beautiful and overall layout of the island is well planned, each room has easy beach access and certain degree of privacy. Ample greenery, birds chirping, soft sand beaches with good amount of marine life. Lots of different areas to snorkel, dive and relax. Have mixed review about the staff though - big shoutout to the teams at F&B (Mr. Sunil), diving center (Krystle, KD) and front desk (Maria) for making our stay and experiences very pleasant. However, some staff at the restaurant (in particular) needs to be more courteous and accomodating. Housekeeping service was also not up to the mark. All in all, it was an enjoyable stay and will definitely plan to visit again

Can't find anything at all to be negative about, not our first trip to the Maldives, but first time to this island. Accommodation perfect, location perfect, staff superb and it was definitely the best food we had tasted. Every day felt like you were on your own private island, it was only at evening meal that you realised how many people were on the island, snorkelling was fine, plenty to see. Don't normally return to places but Makunudu is definitely back on list of places to visit.

We loved our couple of nights stay here (our main stay was at another resort - we wanted to get some contrast). The ambience of the resort is striking - it's very cozy and inviting. The bungalows are traditional with the old-style mirrors and furniture, and you get to enjoy your own private piece of paradise next to your house. The house reef is excellent with a wide variety of fish. The food is also great, and the staff is pleasant. The only mixed reaction is to the shark feeding. While it may seem interesting, the fact that they are fed by humans is not really good for the animals. In addition, dumping the food waste into the pristine ocean waters is not something I would encourage.
