Located in a small medieval town, it's a unique and magical place for a stay full of charm and poetry. Le Vieux Castillon was bought in December 2014 by the hotel group H8 Collection, and was renovated and embellished during 6 months. White, beige and orange colors of the southern landscapes merge into the heat of the rooms for a serene atmosphere for relaxation. The restaurant La Table du Castillon under the direction of Chef Benoit Dahai, is known for its sunny dishes of Provencal-style, and offers a local cuisine inspired by the flavors and colors of Provence.

Le Vieux Castillon is really all over the place in terms of attributes to rate. The physical setting is really special -- eighteen ancient buildings knitted together in a courtyard-plus-pool setting, in the middle of a tiny and equally ancient village. Whoever thought out the renovations did a superb job -- nothing short of that. Of necessity in such a setting, space is at a premium, but we ended up in a three-room suite combining a smallish bedroom, with a large bath and sitting room. Ultra-clean and rather stylish... So why not five stars? My wife has problems dealing with stairs, so while the first room we were shown was charming, the circular staircase from the sitting room up to the bedroom was never going to work (and an upper-floor bedroom during that stretch of hot October weather would have been tough as well, as air conditioning had been shut down for the season). The room we agreed to had three high steps from the doorway area down to the main corridor, and those steps were made of rather slick polished marble without any handrail; we negotiated them as needed, but it was not easy. Service was uneven; the front-desk people were friendly, helpful, and solicitous of my wife's mobility situation, but when we went out into the courtyard hoping for a glass of wine, a young fellow brought menus and... well, vanished. After twenty-five minutes we gave up; a couple of hours later I went out into the place where we'd been seated and those menus were sitting exactly where we'd left them, quite untouched. To be fair, when I mentioned that situation at the front desk they offered to bring wine up to our room, but it was dinner time, so they gave us a deal on wine with our mean (and that was a real favor, much appreciated). The problem with the restaurant was that it is located up a steep flight of stairs from the courtyard. No problem, we thought, as there was a chair lift...but nobody could figure out how to make it work. So my wife had a real struggle up the stairs, with my help, and back down again at the end of the dinner. The restaurant turned out to be surprisingly noisy (a group of ten or so business types sat at a long table and dominated the setting) and pretentious -- with glacially slow service (yes, we knew it was France, but still...). And to judge by our experience, it serves quite forgettable food at high prices. We've seen that pattern at a handful of other spa-oriented places we've visited over the years; sometimes I think people who seek out a spa experience are really there for the atmospherics -- to spend a lot of money and be made to feel important, rather than to have a really relaxing experience. (No more spa places for us!) We were scheduled to stay two nights, but the stairs situation (and, frankly, the dining situation) led us to cancel the second night. In fairness again to the establishment, because of the mobility situation the management agreed not to charge for that second night, which is a genuinely positive reflection upon them. But the hotel, while beautiful and situated in an intriguing place, is not for everyone. My three-star assessment is an average of the good and the unfortunate attributes of the place, and thus is overly generous in some respects and a unfair in others. Whether you'll like it there depends upon who you are, what you do and don't want, and -- lordknows -- how much you're willing to spend. Look into this place carefully; it might be absolutely perfect for you, or it might not work at all --

Dear Sir, Thank you for taking the time to share a detailed report of your journey in our hotel. We were really sorry not to have been informed at reservation stage of your wife's mobility situation which could have helped us to give you a more appropriate room, we have rooms for disable guests on the ground floor but unfortunately this room was no longer available when you arrived. I have well noticed your remarks regarding the stair and we will make the appropriate works during our hotel winter closure. Regarding the spa, we only have 3 treatment cabins and we always propose our guests to book their treatments before arrival, that’s why we send a pre-stay survey to avoid any deception caused on the spot if no treatment schedule is available. I will share with the restaurant staff your comment about your dinner, which is not representative of our service or food quality, your comments help us to improve our service day by day. We are happy if we manage to make our guests feel important and relaxed ( which is not incompatible ) because that’s what they are to us. Sincerely Françoise Mirebeau

I just went there for lunch with almost 20 of my friends. It is an amazing place, set up in a beautiful village. I booked the restaurant an hour before we turned up. They catered for 20 people with a set up menu for adults and buggers for kids. The service was impeccable and the food was 5 stars. The staff was very friendly and they even provided toys for kids in the area downstairs. The receptionist came few times to check on the kids to ensure they were fine. We had lunch on the terrace but the inside is literally amazing. I definitely recommend to have a meal there as the place is magical and the view is incredible. Then have a walk in the medieval village which is full of little features to digest your meal.

We travelled here for a romantic few nights to ourselves in August. In a nutshell it was overpriced in my opinion, the room was small and basic for what we paid... no full length mirror for checking out my outfit before dinner :( Only one other option for dining out in the village so paying a hefty price for meal in hotel restaurant whilst staying a few days can't really avoided. You'll need to rent a car or a direct taxi otherwise you will have trains, buses and 20 min walk up hill to hotel so public transport isnt ideal for this location. The pool and views were beautiful I have to say and a nice touch in the evenings with a cinematic screen which playing old movies (think Audrey Hepburn) by the pool, candles everywhere, very romantic. Was surprised to see quite a few children staying at the hotel as its renowned as a first dates hotel, to me it didn't seem to cater for children so it would be more attractive if it was changed into an adult only hotel. The village itself was cobbled streets and old castle style buildings which gave was delightful. The hotel had 5 or 6 bicycles to use, so we cycled to the nearest landmark which was 7km away, easy to use cycle paths took us to pont du gard aqua duct and park which was worth the trip. Overall the surroundings are steeped in history and it was an enjoyable stay as the staff were helpful and hotel was clean.

We were delighted with this hotel! Excellent staff, fine restaurant, beautiful views, relaxing poolside setting, and a peaceful courtyard all convinced us to take a day off from sightseeing and just relax. Nearby sites like Pont du Gard, the Roman amphitheater in Orange, and Nimes provide lots to see. Excellent additional restaurants in the town and environs. Room 4 is a “junior suite” with a large sitting room and large walk-in closet. I think I’d try a room with a private terrace next time, though lounging by the pool was great! My wife fell in love with the little deck under the huge olive tree in the courtyard.
