Damavand Mountain Eco Camp is the first and sole professional mountaineering complex in Iran. It provides Mount Damavand climbers a plethora of services for them to better and more easily climb the tallest mountain in the Middle-East (5,619 meters). The complex consists of two camps in the north face of Mt. Damavand. The Base Camp is located in Nandal village and is accessible via a paved road. Base camp is about 2300 meters above sea level.The upper camp which we have dubbed 'Advanced Camp' is located on North-East route. The Advanced Camp is located at Fereidoun Takht area (alt. 4350 meters), on the northeast face of Mt. Damavand. The base camp can accommodate up to 24 climbers in 12 tents. The Advanced Camp has 10 sleeping tents. Both camps are equipped with dining and cooking tents and are manned 24/7 for your comfort.

I am 74 years old. July 2017, I decided to hike Damavand (elevation: 18,406ft). I didn't have a clue who to travel with. I was in the US at the time and didn't know anyone in Tehran who would take that trip with me. I found Damavand Eco Camp through the internet. I took a chance and called them. Honestly I was worried since I had no reference for them.
But all my worries were put to rest, the second I med them. From the moment they greeted us, it was as if I had known them for a long time. I didn’t know the people who were hiking with me up the mountain, but because of the way this outfit treated us, we all became great friends and worked as a team.
From the beginning, the service was excellent. We had great meals--breakfast, lunch and dinner-- which cannot be found in the best restaurants in Tehran. Every thing was fresh and organic and tasty. They sent along three hiking guides for our hikeand a cook and provided all the necessities such as food, oxygen and medical emergency kits.
We hiked up to the peak and all 20 of us made it to the summit, which is an accomplishment all on its own. The hike itself is fantastic. The views are amazing and a must for any avid hiker.
I really recommend this group to hike Damavand with. They are one of the best. I really enjoyed it.

It is hard to overstate the level of service and hospitality from this crew. Yes, you still have to get up this mountain on your own steam but the Mt. Damavand Eco Camp sure does make it nice along the way, the food and the accommodations were superior. The mule support and the mountain camp staff were very friendly and exceptionally hard workers. A word about the security—we also visited the village here-Nandal as well as Tehran, Isfahan and Shiraz, at no time did anyone even look at us sternly. Iranians are abundantly aware of the rap they get from the western press and as Americans, everyone seemed to more than appreciate our presence and went out of their way to tell us so. There was no script other than the itinerary that was required to be filed, so plenty of opportunity to talk with local people most of whom wanted to practice their English on us. I highly recommend this trip to anyone.

I enjoyed staying in this very friendly and nice Eco-camp while climbing Mount Damavand fro North East face with my clients from Switzerland. They were very satisfied with services both in Base camp and advance camp. It was a pleasure guiding people while receiving such high quality services. I do recommended this camp for its very delicious cuisine and friendly staff.

Climbed Mt Damavand in July 2017 with my guide, Reza Pirvaly. He holds a record going up and descending in 4hrs 20 mins!
The visa procedures can change; best to call the embassy and have clarity upfront. Women need to wear a scarf but can otherwise, dress trendy so long as limbs are not bared.
Damavand a cone volcano. We drove with our supplies (food, equipment) to Polour - 3 hrs from Tehran. July is hot in Tehran. Polour Mountaineering Fed has a nice basecamp with dorms, kitchen and bath. The Fed fee is USD 50 per climber; no discounts. Better to book all this, as well the dorm up ahead in the shelters, based on the route you take.
We took the popular South Route. You are required to truck it out from Polour (bargain for prices) to Gusfand (2950mt) - a 40 min ride. From there, pay for a mule to carry your bags. Polour. If you visit in July/Aug - dont miss the super red massive poppy flowers that flood the foothills of Damavand.
From Gusfand, its a 3-5 hrs STEEP walk up a very sandy track. The weather in summer does not require a jacket here. But you will, soon as you reach the new Baragh e Sevom Shelter at 4280 mt. The shelter has a kitchen where you can buy supplies. We would cook our meals in the large mess with water from tanks that bring glacier waters; the waters here tend to have a little sulphur content which can give you a headache or nausea, topped with altitude.
Although the locals climb Damavand in 2 days or less; its not advisable. The terrain is tough, very steep uphill, clambering through loose rocks, sandy paths, snow and ice. It made Kilimanjaro feel like a walk in the park!! You will be going up a tough and continuous incline, in half the time taken to summit Kili. Locals also always advise starting the summit push in the morning, unlike Kili (done in the night) as it can get very very cold, weather can pack up anytime on Damavand and its not worth taking a chance on those tough slopes with an active sulphur peak.
Tips: Start diamox a day prior to the climb (you see just toooo many sick people everywhere); dont bother climbing in 2 days. 3 days with an additional day for bad weather is a good idea. After reaching Barag e sevom, vegetate! Do some Yoga for just breathing, Trek upto Icefall at 5000mt, for acclimitization, Summit push on Day 3 and return to the shelter to sleep. Best to leave for Polour on Day 4 and Tehran thereafter. Watch out for the sulphur fumarole before the summit; it chokes you immediately and leaves you sick for the day.
Way down is the same process: negotiate with a mule to reach Gusfand, try to share a truck to Polour to cut costs.
After Polour, stop at the Emam Shrine, enroute Tehran for great Irani food. Dont miss the Barley Soup, Thick Noodle Soup, Chello Kababs and tons of other goodies. There is tons of awesome food in Iran for vegetarians, contrary to popular belief.

It was an amazing experience in this camp. Even if trekking was a bit hard for me but kind and professional stuff made me feel so great that now I'm ready to come back and do it again... ;)
And of course nothing to say about view around... It's just gorgeous... Just looking at this landscapes you can spend weeks!

Beginning of July, I participated a trekking to summit Mount Damavand the highest point of Iran 5,619m.

There are several routs to summit mount Damavand such as south face, west face, north-east face, north-face, etc and Spilet has established eco camps for climbers ascending through north-east face. Base camp is located in Nandal which is within 3 hrs drive from Tehran at around 2200 meter elevation and advance camp is located at elevation of 4350 meter in area called Freidoun takht. I have been staying in base camp several times; not only to summit Damavand but also for some other trekking package tours in the area. It’s very clean and comfortable with a cozy garden and spectacular view of mount Damavand. It takes about 5 hrs to get from base camp to advance camp. You only need to carry your day pack and duffel bags will be carried by mules. Advance camp tents are clean, spacious, comfortable and secluded from other mountaineers camps in the area so that you could spend a quite night with good sleep to be well prepared for summit day. If the weather is nice, you’ll face amazing views from advance camp too : clouds, sun and mountain ranges. Guides are professional and knowledgeable. Camp staffs are polite, friendly and helpful and do their best to make your stay / summit pleasant and as comfortable as possible. Staying in base camp and advance camp is highly recommend for any one who plans to summit Damavand as you’ll receive great level of service, support and comfort during your climbing. The experience has always been wonderful for me and I would definitely go back there if I’m going to make my second attempt on Damavand from North East face.
