Booked a Motel Studio for 2 Nights in Early November 2015 for around US$200 for 2 pax Pros: - Location: Short drive away from most places in the Park. Excellent view of the Mountains from the front of the property even if you don't get the room with the view - Service: Very friendly & helpful. Unfortunately, the weather was... More

Perfect location for those attempting the Tongariro Crossing -- short drive to Whakapapa (for visitor center), Nat'l Park Village (for gear, food, etc), and Mangatepopo (TAC trailhead). Very prompt and helpful responses to our emailed queries leading up to our trip. We opted for the motel section, which was surprisingly comfortable and cozy for a 2-night stay. Older but well-maintained,... More

Highlights: - Perfectly located: Closest to the Mangatepopo point, Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Close by Tongariro National Park. Also, 40mins drive to Stump bay, Lake Taupo or Taumarunui, Forgotten Highway/State Highway 43 drive to Mt. Taranaki. So, not limited to the crossing, still plenty to discover around here. - Best service for drop/pick-up for the crossing: On-line reservation; earliest shuttle available... More

This lodge is the most convenient for the Tongariro Crossing, which is not to be missed if you can tramp up and down 3000ft and 12 miles in a day. The owner, Callum is an international mountain runner. He is extremely helpful with respect to dressing for the crossing etc. and drives the first shuttle to arrive at the start... More

The staff were incredibly friendly and very helpful. The cabin was like new and the heated bed felt wonderful after our hike! The room had every amenity and was very fresh and clean. Great place to stay if you are doing the hike because they offer a shuttle service to the starting point and their lunch for the hike had... More

Our purpose was to hike the Alpine Crossing in Tangariro National Park. We needed a room and shuttle. The Discovery Lodge had both. The room came with a small kitchen, and was bright, clean and airy. The organizer of the transportation service strongly recommended we take an early shuttle to get started both to finish and to avoid any possible... More

We stayed for 2 nights before and after hiking the Tongairiro Crossing. We were traveling in a campervan. The space for campervans isn't huge here but there was enough space so we weren't door to door with other travelers, allowing some space for privacy. The transportation to/from the trail head and end was priceless. And there is just something cool... More

When we checked into Discovery Lodge (mid-March), we were kindly greeted and given plenty of cautionary advice about undertaking the TAC. We loved the shared chalet which was quiet; we never heard our neighbors. Views are lovely. One reason we chose the chalet was to self-cater. We had a hot plate, excellent cookware except for kettle (lid stuck on), toaster,... More

We stayed in one of the chalets, which was super clean and modern. The bathroom (shower, especially) was modern and very efficient. The chalet had extensive rustic views which made for a relaxing stay. We planned to do the Tongariro crossing, but the weather unfortunately did not allow it. The staff was very friendly. They kept us informed of weather... More

This was my second stay with Discovery Lodge, and it was even more amazing than I had remembered. I stayed in one of the chalets, which have views onto the volcanoes (albeit partly obscured by shrubs!). The accommodation is clean, modern and very comfortable. The view of the stars at night is jaw-dropping. Jed on reception was so helpful; even... More
