This little boutique get-a-way lodge is nestled in the valley of Copey, Dota. It has the most exquisite views of both Sunsets and morning mountains that surround it. It lies quiet next to the sounds of flowing quebrada flowing though the mountains. The rooms offer a variety of experiences. It is recommended that when traveling here that you prepare for very cool temperatures at night. While the rooms provide the extra blankets you will need they do not come with a heater except for two of the cabins that have fireplaces. Warm slippers and Pajamas are a must. The lodge is simply beautiful and offers all the comforts and amenities one desires in a scenic mountain lodge. The hosts are very amenable to your needs. The local town of Santa Maria is only about 8km and has the flair of a warm and inviting touristy touch with little shops and cafes. The Toucanet Lodge is a sure "visit again" destination for us. We loved our recent vacation stay at El Toucanet in Copey de Dota. Diego was so helpful with all our many questions. The setting is one of the most beautiful in Costa Rica. Add in delicious food (great chef and good menu), our cozy little cabin with the best back porch ever, cool temps, and we were delighted! We have been several times before and will certainly return in the future.

Toucanet lodge is in a very beautiful rural location. Our cabin had a fabulous balcony, it was clean and very comfortable. Diego and other staff members were very friendly and welcoming. Diego even recommended and helped us book a coffee tour and a morning quetzal tour (both highly recommended!). We had an amazing time and especially enjoyed the hummingbirds at breakfast.

Toucanet Lodge is a must for everyone interested escaping the big tourist sides and getting to know Costa Rica rural live. The location is most tranquil, the nature is at its best, it is a humming bird and other birds' paradise, all staff are the most kind people who help with everything you need, and the food is delicious. The manager organised me a pick up in Alejula as well as we transport to Quepos with an amazing driver. If you want to experience real Costa Rica, you can't be in any other better place.

Diego and the chief at Toucanet catered to our every need. My family were the only guests at the hotel which proved to be a delightful surprise. We enjoyed a hike that featured many animal encounters and were served a scrumptious dinner that included whole fish, traditional Costa Rican cuisine, and exquisite locally made spirits. After checkout my daughter left her iPad and Diego the manager reached out to us and is willing to ship it back to our home for her. Highly recommend this quaint little hotel in a lovely little town!

We spent three nights at El Toucanet last week, and had a great time. The cabins are rustic and very basic, but plenty of blankets and comfortable beds make for comfortable accommodations. The cabins and lodge are surrounded by lovely plantings and patches of forest, teeming with birds and other wildlife. We enjoyed the 11 species of hummingbirds zipping around the flowers and feeders and along the nature trail leading into the adjacent hills. The walk along the road up-valley from the lodge was very productive as well as beautiful. The food is good, and the staff are always helpful, going out of their way to make our stay pleasant. We enjoyed trout from the nearby farm, which a local American ex-pat said was raised with fairly natural, less chemical-intensive methods; and Diego told us the morning coffee was raised on the property. It was an easy drive up to the national parks. I'd stay here again if I was in the area.

We loved our stay at El Toucanet. The rooms are simple, but cozy and clean. There's no central heat in the rooms, and it does get a bit chilly at night, but the ample blankets provided kept us warm, and there's also a fireplace with wood provided. You won't find glamorous accommodations here, but it is a quaint, quiet getaway. The restaurant food is decent, and Diego, who runs day-to-day operations, was fantastic and very accommodating to all of our requests. Internet isn't great. We all drank tap water, and had no issues with it or the food. The birding at and around El Toucanet is fabulous. Walking the grounds in the morning got us 11 species of hummingbirds, northern emerald toucanets, grassquits, an owl, and many, MANY more birds. There's a trail on the property that offered gorgeous views of the countryside as well as great birding. You can also walk the road outside the hotel in either direction. Also nearby you can get tours to see resplendent quetzals (< 10 minutes away!), see Los Quetzales National Park (decent birding, but no quetzals for us), or Tipanti National Park (we didn't have time to visit). Be aware that roads in this area are paved but in poor condition (rock slides, large pot holes, narrow roads with sharp turns, etc). We recommend a high-clearance vehicle, but 4-wheel drive isn't necessary.

We stayed in Toucanet Lodge for one night. We were amazed by the kindness and hospitality of our friends there. They will always try to arrange you and tell you little stories about the local environment. Most of all, the food, the restaurant is AMAZING ! I had the best Trucha of my life and one of the best fish of my life. Perfectly cooked, and all the products are 100% local which mean the quality, the authenticity and the simplicity you have in your plate is simply outstanding. It also comes from 2 French guys who love to eat ! 😉 It was honestly like a 1 Michelin star dish, cooked with heart, passion & respect. Last but not least, I forgot my AirPods at the hotel and they insisted to send them back to me at no costs, which I never saw anywhere so again a big thanks to them, and it gives you a quick idea of their level of hospitality. Guys, if you wanna have a different experience of Costa Rica, in the middle of the mountains at an altitude of 2000m, via magnifique petites routes and unique landscapes, Toucanet Lodge is a Must Do! Something you will never find in the touristic guides and that you are not ready to forget...

My husband and I spent two days/nights at Toucanet Lodge after arriving in San Jose and before heading to the Osa peninsula. The lodge is beautiful, with separate cabins and rooms on the property, and a restaurant with panoramic windows overlooking the surrounding scenery, including beautiful humming birds. The chef prepares excellent meals, the host/manager is friendly and knowledgeable, and will make arrangements for visits, guides and transportation on request. We had a wonderful time discovering the area, going on bird hikes, and tasting the local coffee. We highly recommend this lodge!

Just wanted to let you know about the situation I lived in the Hotel "El Toucanet Lodge" I reserved the whole hotel for my wedding in 2020. Due to the coronavirus they were closed the day I had the booking. I understood the situation and told them to keep the money and move the reservation because I wanted to support the "local business and help them through the hard times"(big mistake). They told me they would contact me once they were open again. After several months of waiting I decided to call them to check for any updates(since many hotels in the country were opening again). They told me that my reservation was done with a previous manager of the hotel and that it was no longer valid. They told me they were not going to be responsible for any reservations or deals of the previous manager and that I lost my money. This hotel is NOT owner-operated is dangerous for costumers due to they way it works. They subcontract the manager temporarily and when it changes they deny refund or service to the costumer. I will never ever go back there or recommend that place. Beware! I don't want anyone else to go experience the same situation with this hotel.
