Staying in this ancient castle with such a rich history sets this stay apart from the many chateau stays we have had during our frequent trips to France. It just can’t be judged by the standards of the vanity chateaus built by the ultra rich to boast of their wealth. Durtal is a true defensive castle built many, many centuries ago. It is not as luxurious as many of the former but the experience is fascinating—and a tour with Durtal’s docent is a must to get the full experience. Bedding was comfortable, breakfast enjoyable, and the proprietress lovely. Enjoy your stay !

We stayed here for our anniversary and it was absolutely beautiful!! We got the family suite which was 2 bedrooms and a separate bathroom, with a separate toilet area which was nice for accommodating 4 people 😊. It was extremely roomy! Lots of room for us to spread out. We especially enjoyed getting a lovely tour of the castle after breakfast by the warm and gracious owner (and her dog😁). Would definitely stay here again if we're to travel to France again!

We stayed overnight on route for a week in France. We were welcomed and made to feel at home very quickly. The Chateau was an incredible historic piece of architecture and a guided tour was an amazing insight into its past. The rooms were very comfortable with beautiful views over the town of Durtal and surrounding Loir Valley. Breakfast was typically French with fresh ingredients and produce. We would definitely stay here again when we have the chance.

We stayed here on our way through the Loire Valley and it's certainly an atmospheric place. Staff were friendly and accommodating. We booked a family room which had two bedrooms and a shared bathroom. We felt that perhaps our accommodation was a little shabby compared to the non family rooms based on the reviews we've read here. Our family room was round the side of the castle where as the main rooms seemed to be all off a central corridor. There was a mixture of fantastic antiques, flimsy partition walls, cheap light fixtures plus the addition of strange paint choices, this all added up to a slightly odd feel in the room. There was some interesting wall paper adorned with cherubs that my 5 year old, much to my amusement, informed me came alive in the night! I'm glad he said this as we were leaving and not before we went to bed. The breakfast was of a very good standard. Overall we felt it was overpriced for the quality in the room. Although we won't be returning I wouldn't rule it out for people with a particular interest in history as it is quite a unique place. You can literally feel the 1000 year old history in every inch of the place. I would have liked to see some historical info info in the room and a little more care to make it a slightly more luxurious experience.
