Maybe first among all the reasons to visit this amazing place is the sound of it. It is a birders paradise with almost 300 varieties on site and an expert staff doing world class research in conjunction with Cornell University in the USA. The calls of the resident birds are as musical and relaxing as can be and was, for me, the signature feature of Mystic River. The staff, from the birder guides, to the kitchen staff to the hospitality team were expert, friendly and helpful. Beautiful, well appointed cabins could not have been more comfortable. the grounds, of course, have to be spectacular to support the birds and the birding and the trails are very well marked and maintained and not too challenging for people in average shape. The Macal river meanders by and just watching the river roll by and listening to the birds is enough to make this place special. But they offer a variety of activities and tours as well. The food exceeds expectations. Hope that when you visit the chef prepares a lamb curry or the warm cucumber soup. you don't have to worry about where the food is sourced since they grow their own vegetables and livestock. I've lived in Belize for three years. It's called "the Jewel" and it is full of wondrous places to see and stay. The mystic River Resort is at the top of any of them.

While the grounds, rooms, location, and food were excellent, it's the staff that makes this place special. From the front desk to the guides to the drivers to the bartenders/servers, everyone was warm, welcoming, and informative. While they handled our booking for the ATM cave tour, and provided us with a canoe to paddle into nearby San Ignacio, we also had an epic day with one of their guides/naturalists, Diego. He took me on an epic birding excursion in the morning, and then my wife joined in for a full afternoon of touring Xunantunich. He was an encyclopedia of knowledge—and hilarious to boot. There is zero doubt that staying here enhanced our trip, and we will definitely go back.

What a wonder place! Everything we could have imagined and more! The staff is wonderful and extremely accommodating. The open air dining is wonderful and the food is very good and fresh. Everything was clean and well maintained. During breakfast, groups of Collared Aracari, Lesson's Motmots, Brown Jays and other birds can be seen at the feeder providing a wonderful display of color. If you want to bird, this is the place to go! Our guide Diego was one of the best birders I have ever been in the field with, and I have been with some good ones. He knows where the birds are and has eyes like an eagle himself. He will spot birds you did not even know were there. I added around 90 or more birds to my list, including Toucans, Trogans and Parrots. Diego was also extremely knowledgeable on the Mayan culture and provided great insight on the construction and use of the temples. The other guides were also well versed and knowledgeable. Among the caves, the river, the Mayan sites and other activities, there is a lot to keep you occupied or you can sit in a lounge chair with beverage of your choice watch the beautiful river flow gently by.

This place is phenomenal! The staff are very well educated and caring of your stay. Highly recommend I had a great time with the family and escaped the “hype” over the coronavirus back home. If you are looking for a great vacation with your family or even by yourself, this is the place to be, you will not be disappointed!
