Most amazing place in the world. Kitesurfing conditions fantastic great wind flat water and sandy. Met with cold beer straight out of the water. Food was simply amazing. Lots of other activities and we were well looked after.

A perfect island escape - thanks Kirsty and the team! What a gorgeous place to get away from it all. The beach surrounds the island and the sand is soft, with snorkelling around the reef just off the beach and another reef further out. The wildlife was spectacular - whales seen from the beach, reef sharks beaching themselves to get at the baitfish, birds, hermit crabs, pets, tame bat, and all the reef fish. We stayed in the superior fale and had all the luxuries you could want - very comfortable bed with lovely sheets and a great mosquito net. The shower was hot and the eco toiletries were gorgeous (and made specially for Mounu). It was sparkling clean and serviced every day. The fale are well spread out so feel very private. The meals were fresh and delicious - plenty of fruit, vegetables and fish. There were plenty of drink options but we were particularly taken with the sour cocktails! We also really enjoyed getting to know the other guests on the island over mealtimes - a very friendly and fun bunch of people. Whale-swimming was well run and the boat was perfect: a small number of people and plenty of opportunities to get into the water with the whales. There was a lot to see above the water too - breaches, tail slapping and fin slapping. Just amazing to see these enormous creatures up close! Other than the whales there was kiteboarding, kayaking, SUPboarding and snorkelling off the island. Other activities such as fishing can be organised in advance. However, it was lovely just to kick back and read (plenty of books in the island library). Although there was the occasional mosquito, these were much less of a problem than other locations around Vava'u. The island gets sprayed and the nets are in great condition. We are planning a longer trip back next year!

We’ve just spent the most wonderful week with Kirsty & the crew on the very special but tiny island that is Mounu. We haven’t relaxed so much in years. Essentials: swimming togs, books, sunscreen, very little else. We got plenty of use from our snorkelling gear while roaming around the pretty reef and generally had a very cruisy time. If you’re a ‘5 star and no less’ princess you might find the eco resort aspects and lack of organised fun less to your liking, but for us, the clean and comfortable fales, utter tranquility and pace of ‘Mounu time’ equate to more luxury than aircon and room service. We dined fantastically on fresh fish, delicious lunches and far too many desserts - if I had to moan, it would be that the island isn’t big enough to burn off all the lovely food! But we didn’t go there to diet, we went to swim with whales, and we did! We spent a good amount of time in the water with these huge but beautiful creatures, and saw plenty more from the island, they really are there in abundance at the right time of year. Kirsty has spent a good chunk of her life in close contact with Vava’u’s humpbacks. She is a fount of knowledge and a very respectful guide, ensuring guests and whales interact safely and splendidly. Whilst the whale swimming was the experience of a lifetime, and a big tick off our bucket list, it was all wrapped up in a very special place run by friendly and hospitable people, not forgetting the animals!

If you would like the authentic, professional whale swimming experience, excellent food & drink & intimate guest setting, then book Mounu Island! Kirsty is a superb chef, a professional mixologist makes the perfect drink, Nadi and Mr. May are a top notch whale boat captain & guide. There are even the perfect island pets - Roxy the bat, some cool cats, and Otto the dog who is forever at risk of me sending in my Seal Team to abduct him and bring him to CA!! We enjoyed a nice smore fit pit on the beach and a special visit to the Tongan fair on the mainland where the King of Tonga made an appearance. The guest Fale's are very clean and nicely kept. Enjoy the beauty of this tiny island!

and greet time with staff. Kirsty moved the teenage girls into 1 fale, our 7 year old who still likes to sleep with us joined us in our fale, both fales were clean with mozzie nets, plenty of room, and a bathroom. She explained the set up to us, ensuring the girls understood this is an eco island, solar power etc and general things to observe-waste, composting etc The girls were super excited to learn they could have kiting lessons, kayak or snorkel as they pleased. Kirsty and crew showed the best and safest places, from then apart from eating and whale watching our teenage girls cruised on their own. From both decks we had amazing views to watch the whales swim so close to the island. We could hear them blowing and watch them breaching from the deck. Surrounded by lush gardens we chilled with a book from a well stocked resort library, when we weren't out swimming with the whales. The Mounu Island team were always on hand to respond to our needs, our food was amazing, simple, clean and healthy. I loved the japanese style dishes and desert every day for lunch and dinner, a real treat, definitely something the girls aren't used to back home. The crew's knowledge and empathy with the whales was exceptional. Our youngest completely trusted Nati and Mr May, holding Mr May's hand while swimming towards the whales. The place is visually spectacular, I've travelled extensively and now realise there really is no place like the South Pacific, Vava'u is an infinity pool of liquid velvet, mesmerizingly authentic. We've just arrived back in Fiji, staying at the other end of the spectrum in tourism, having experienced one of the most relaxing, romantic, exciting and inspired holidays ever...with a heartbeat I'd rather be back on Mounu. Thanks for such a whale of a time Kirst,Tongan crew, Swedes and our fab american couple we shared the island with. V x
