I highly reccomend Curassow lodge for your amazon adventure. They stand out as a small business that puts their guests first and goes out of their way to give them a personalized experience and make each guest feel like part of their family. My boyfriend and I stayed here for 5 days with our tour guide Flavio and absolutely loved it. I was a bit afraid to go into the amazon jungle hours away from any towns or hospitals at first, but Flavio made us feel very safe as he grew up in the amazon jungle and has worked as a tour guide for many years. He knows the jungle very well and had experience leading survival trips there as well. He is very knowledgeable about the amazonian cultures, traditions, and medicinal practices. He also knows how to spot animals high up in the treetops and we had the chance to see many birds, monkeys, insects, and various other animals in their natural habitat with him. Flavio is also a great guide and he made us feel very welcomed to the jungle. He told us many stories during our meals about his life in the jungle and local legends and customs. He went out of his way to make sure we had a great experience and even picked us up from the airport at 5:30 am and took us on a tour of Belen market while we waited to go to the lodge. Curassow is a smaller lodge with a family feel. We were the only guests during our visit but Flavio told us the maximum capacity is 15 guests and each group always has their own private tour guide. There is a schedule of activities each day including swimming in the Amazon, piraña fishing, nature walks and boat tours. But the tour guides are open to changing the schedule based on your needs, if you need more time to rest or want to do a specific activity again, they are happy to accomodate. Their cook Ricardo made us delicious meals every day and made delicious vegetarian meals for me. Their bartender Julio also made us different juices for each meal using different fruits from the jungle. He also makes great pisco sours with different fruits from the jungle. The rooms were very beautiful and clean. The room service was great, they cleaned each day and made sure we had everything we needed. They were well equiped for the jungle environment and had a good fan for ventilation, mosquito nets on all the windows, and a mosquito net over the bed. This was the only place in the jungle we did not get mosquito bites. They even made a beautiful display of flowers and balloons for us because we celebrated out 1 year anniversary here. We had a wonderful experience here and I will definitely return to Curassow lodge when we visit Iquitos again. A helpful tip is to bring clothing mosquitos cannot bite through. There are more mosquitos than you can possibly imagine in the jungle.

After researching several options, we chose Curassow Amazon Lodge largely due to the prompt and friendly correspondence with Martin, the Manager. Whom, to my surprise, also kindly and generously organized a birthday cake for me on our arrival. What also led us to book with Curassow Amazon Lodge was the location within the Amazon rainforest of the Tamshiyacu - Tahuayo Reserve, known to have the greatest diversity of flora and fauna found in the world, providing us the opportunity to book as a private 6D/5N tour that was fully customizable in hopes of maximizing our chances of witnessing an array of wildlife. This trip did not disappoint!
During our stay we were provided with breakfast, lunch and dinner prepared daily by their chef, consisting of local Amazonian cuisine and fresh juices. Our private Bungalow contained a bathroom with shower, and outdoor space to relax in hammocks. Charging ports were available in the rooms, along with Wifi throughout the lodge.
Daily activities were flexible to suit our desires to explore the jungle in all aspects from early mornings before the sun rose to afternoon boat tours to night walks. Alex, our guide was highly experienced and knowledgeable, providing us with a wealth of information on the various fauna and flora we came across as well as traditional history/customs of the peoples of the Amazon. In fact, both our guide and boatsman were amazing, spotting unique wildlife throughout, including the endangered Wattled Curassow!!
Our time was truly memorable due to what seemed be an infinite list of common and rare species we witnessed during our boat tours and jungle walks. We also spent an afternoon successfully fishing for piranha, catfish, acarahuazú, monk fish, and that night went spear fishing for dragon fish. We also experienced grey dolphins playing in the river as the sun set around us and were fortunate enough to witness the shy pink dolphins as they followed our boat from a short distance away. Our last night was spent in the jungle sleeping in hammocks, listening to the nightly sounds of the Amazon and the early morning calls of howler monkeys. We even came across evidence of jaguar during our night walk.
We would like to thank the crew at Curassow Amazon Lodge for an amazing experience that we will not soon forget. Highly recommend this lodge to anyone seeking a non-touristy amazon jungle experience from a family run lodge that seeks to build sustainable tourism and promote local communities for the protection of this unique ecosystem. Thank you! We have already and will continue to pass on our recommendation to others.

Great Jungle experience. I recommend this lodge. The daily tours were great and the guides knew how to spot the animals in the hard to find places.. The rooms had an electric fan to keep cool And each room has a private bathroom and hot water. Plus the main lounge has satellite wifi That was a plus for me to stay in contact back home.

It was a beautiful and unique experience. For starters, the room is always super clean and the place is super protected; then almost no insects and bugs come in. It's the most protected you can be! I liked that because I could sleep peacefully. On the other hand, the service is excellent!!! People are very friendly and always with a cute attitude, smiling and willing to make your trip a great experience. The food is delicious; well served and complete. All very rich!!! The guides are top!! Very good, they know a lot, are experts and are flexible when it comes to making the itinerary according to the activities you prefer to do. All this makes the place very familiar and welcoming. We'll definitely be back!

There are myriad positive things to say about Curassow that other reviews cover, which I will summarize below:
> Location boasted exceptional biodiversity > Private guides with great knowledge of both local flora and fauna but also the culture of the indigenous population > A large social , communal area where we met other like-minded travellers > Friendly and polite staff > Animals are observed in their natural habitat which is a more ethical and non-intrusive method of interacting with the wildlife than observing it in cages > We understand profits benefit local communities
I did think our stay could have been improved with some adjustments: > The option for a group vs a private tour. We enjoy the former as means of socializing with others, and think it can also lead to more learning when different individuals in the group ask unique questions. I also thunk it could be a good way of rewarding tour guides with more tips for less effort. We didn’t also realize Curassow only did private tours but perhaps we missed this detail when booking. > The shower water smelt swampy, and think the complaint was consistently voiced by others we met. I understand access to clean water may be limited in so remote a location, but I’d encourage this to be looked into and improved on. > Vegetarian meals lacked diversity.
I hope my feedback is taken constructively and not critically to improve the experience for future tourists.

This was our 4th visit to Curassow Lodge and looking forward to next year and our fifth visit. We use the Lodge as our base for mission trips in the area. The staff is the greatest and will help you with your needs. The food is excellent and the lodge is always improving. This year there is solar power as well as a larger generator, on demand water heaters in many bungalows and best of all oscillating fans in the rooms. Moving the air with a 15” fan makes it almost feel like A/C. “Almost” It is a great improvement over the small battery operated fans we usually pack. The team is great from the airport to the Lodge moving all the luggage to the van then the boat and ultimately to your bungalow at Curassow Lodge. Just as helpful on the return trip to Iquitos. Their team will show you the jungle sites by boat or hiking. You will enjoy your time in the Amazon basin at Curassow Lodge.

This experience has been incredible and has left me speechless. Our tour guide Flavio was so amazing and supportive as our tour guide and the assistant to our Maestro, Antony for our Ayahuasca healing ❤️🩹 journey. This Maestro, is the most incredible man in the world who has a huge heart and cares about his patients on another level. The owners of the lodge were so attentive when the airlines lost our luggage, and made our stay beautiful and helped us get everything we needed. I would definitely suggest this lodge to anyone.

We, a family of 3 (daughter 12 yrs old) visited Curassow Lodge located in a communal reserve in July. We were picked by our personal guide, Alexander, for the duration of our stay from our hotel in Iquitos and taken by car to a boat that would take us up the Amazon River, through the “gates to paradise” and on smaller tributaries and lakes to the lodge. We had prepared for a real “jungle dive” but helpers and Alexander made sure any physical duress was completely absent while the excitement was intact.
The accommodation was simple yet perfect. Comfortable beds for us and our daughter in the middle of jungle effectively screened off by mosquito netting all around made for an incredible experience of sounds evenings and mornings. Food was prepared by the excellent Riccardo, especially the fish prepared in banana leaves was a true hit.
Through the gates to Paradise the jungle really came alive. Over the next 5days/ 4 nights we experienced monkeys (Spider, Squirrel, Pygmae and Red Howling Monkey), a myriad of birds expertly identify and related by Alexander, butterflies, wax tale leaf hopper, plants, trees and funghi and on night trips we saw Capybara on the river bank, Caimans in the river as well as tarantulas and scorpions. One day we went back the amazon River where we had a chance to see and swim with pink and grey dolphins and enjoy a sunset cruise back home while digesting the experience. We also went on a much successful piranha fishing trip that also saw us land catfish and a monk(?)fish. Piranhas were later served up fried by Riccardo.
One of the most treasured experiences we had as a family was gliding quietly down one of the smaller rivers where the canopy opened up enough to reveal a black night back sky populated with a great number of stars and the Milky Way streaking across.
We would like to thank the crew at the Curassow Lodge and Alexander our guide for many memorable experiences and for teaching us a lot about the jungle, its ecology and lives of people inhabiting the communal reserve. We can recommend this to anyone, also families with children. Currasow and the Amazon jungly and river will stay with you always.
