This is a great find, especially for the price! (Look for deals and book through the free Barcelo membership.) The location is good, as the Tamarindo town and beach is about a 15-20 minute walk. (You can walk the whole way along the beach, but that takes much longer.) The grounds are very nice, and the beach is beautiful. Half the beach is rocky and half is smooth for swimming. The rocky parts make it picturesque, especially for the sunset. The food is what the other reviews describe - cafeteria style with not much variety. However, if you go in knowing what you’re getting cuisine-wise, and venture out sometimes for different food (the budget friendly nature of this resort might help you justify splurging on some different dining experiences), then you’ll be satisfied. We went to the Kyoto restaurant, which was a nice perk. The drinks are well made, but the glasses are small so consider bringing a larger container and they’ll fill that for you. The pool is very pretty and warm. However, the jacuzzi is not hot. Our room was very nice, and had a nice balcony. The entertainment team is very talented! I was so impressed by the nightly shows in the amphitheater! I’d suggest the team make their schedule of events more advertised, so no one misses the fun! The open air lounge is very relaxing. They have a tour facilitator that can help you book tours that you’re interested in. Everyone is very nice and welcoming. All in all, this was a great place to stay! Thank you, Occidental Tamarindo!…
We have stayed here 4 times and will return again. We stayed 12 nights this trip and I wish it was longer. The location is the best if you like to surf and fish. The beach out front has a reef break and river mouth and beach break. The fishing is also good. The pool and lounge chairs are great and the food and drinks are yummy! Highly recommend this hotel.
This is not a five-star resort. I feel like the I was lied to. The quality of this resort is closer to a one star. Cafeteria style food, unsanitary and gross. I feel like the security guards were spending more time watching the guests than keeping the resort safe. This place needs a complete overhaul and new management. Please take at least 3 stars off of your google rating.
If 7 days of suntanning, doing aerobics in the pool, and doing other resort type activities (dance lessons, yoga, ping pong, chess etc) is what you're looking for, then this place is great! The food is average and gets a little boring after a while, but I've had much worse. The resort is quite a ways from town and there's no shuttle (there are taxis but that expense adds up quickly), so you are pretty much confined to the resort. Unless you go on a tour. We booked one through the tour guide on site and it was great but makes for a long day! We ended up renting a car and going on our own adventure, which was fabulous but a 3.5 hour drive each way to pretty much anything worth seeing.
I was going to wait to review & would have rated it better if not by the horrible & upsetting experience at Restaurant Kioto. As we were walking in a waitress called Yirlania, to our faces lifted her arm to look at her watch & starred back in annoyance, it was so unwelcoming that I asked her if she was upset & she replied we were late & to select our order fast to not delay service for everyone. I was shocked, explained we were on vacations, not intentionally late & still within the allowed time (10 mins passed). The rest of the dinner she was very unpleasant, it ruined my birthday. After the main dish, dessert was served to everyone but me, my husband courteously gave me his, then all 3 waitresses oddly came together bringing my little dessert plate & were evidently surprised to see I had one, my husband suspected foul play & didn't eat it. This is completely unacceptable customer service to say the very least. The WIFI is terrible, only works by the pool/reception & not very well, struggled to stay connected, which at this time & age shouldn't happen, most need access to WIFI for numerous important reasons. It was surprising to not see a cover mattress, the bedsheet goes directly on the bare mattress, which disgusted us. The lounge chairs aren't cleaned, other resorts pressure clean them every night, not here. Our room phone wasn't working & told it couldn't be fixed, so we had to walk to ask for anything. Hotel grounds are nice, beach is rocky but nice natural pools form.…
This is our 3rd time here and we can’t get enough. We are now bringing friends and family as we love this hotel. Heiner the evening manager has went above and beyond all our expectations. We celebrated our wedding anniversary here. Our room was made up with Champagne, flowers, chocolate covered strawberries and more!!! The staff are incredible!!! Polite, professional, very friendly and welcoming. I need to give a shout-out to Mary and Bella for their excellent service while dining. I highly recommend this place for anyone!!! We will be back in December ❤️
Nice enough all-inclusive resort with very reasonable prices, especially if you book far in advance. As a family of five, we all enjoyed the grounds, activities, and the beach. Location is absolutely amazing, food provides great variety, and bars have an interesting variety of mixed drinks and, of course, Imperial cerveza. Staff throughout the resort speak English well enough and go above expectations to serve their guests.
We enjoyed our stay here very much! The staff was amazing, and Cristina went above and beyond to help us. She welcomed us with a great attitude and took the time to assist us with a personal issue. There was always some form of entertainment going on; it was great not having to leave the resort for anything although the was also plenty to do and see in the town.
Resort is situated on the beach good that it has private beach but rooms are not good as per the resort it needs renovation. Food is good but the snacks counter it was not good as like chips was stale and also popcorn too was stale. Hotel staff is friendly but expect reception staff it is language problem.
This all-inclusive hotel will be disappointing to US travelers who have stayed at other all-inclusives, like Beaches or Club Med. The accommodations are not modern, but reasonably well maintained. The beach is small, mostly rocky. The food is below average for this category, about the level of Golden Corral in the US. There is no pool wait service and the pool bar is not fully equipped to do many drinks. The mixed drinks tend to be pretty watery. There is very little English spoken (compared for example to Club Med’s pretty evenly multilingual approach). During our stay there were a lot of local day pass users, who often do not treat the facilities like full time guests. The pool is small relative to hotel capacity and when the day trippers come in, chairs may be hard to come by. A bit like going to Florida at spring break - not my usual choice. Tamarindo is a surf place, and there is some surfing off the hotel beach, but with the rocks it is best for experienced surfers. Most surfing is in town, which is about a 30 minute walk from the hotel. I would not recommend this hotel compared to all of the other all-inclusives available in Mexico and the Caribbean.…
