2022 Travelers' Choice Best of the Best
We’re family-owned and our passion shows. Cala Luna is one of the only hotels in Guanacaste, Costa Rica that remains green all year round. There are few barriers between us and nature. Open-plan spaces and secluded accommodations meld into the lush jungle that attracts more wildlife than anywhere else in the area – monkeys, raccoons, iguanas, birds, insects, and us. Within this natural retreat, we offer five-star barefoot luxury that’s open to everyone. We nourish our senses daily through delicious home-grown ingredients, gastronomic farm-to-table dinners, holistic wellness, spa therapies, and deep connection to Mother Earth. From dining with us at our homestead La Senda and walking the world’s largest labyrinth, to sipping cocktails on the beach as the sun slips over the edge of the ocean – you choose the memories to carry home. Welcome to an unforgettable experience.

Really lovely hotel. The room was very nice and comfortable with an amazing bath which was enormous (although the hot water did run out). There is a great patio area with a hammock We were 5 mins from the beach with a direct path. The rooms were cleaned to a high standard The staff were very friendly and helpful There are plenty of tours to do and it's about a 20 mins walk to all the town centre Overall, a great place to stay

We were greeted in a mediocre way, and were not made to feel particularly special, more of just a normal check-in and off you go. We were not given a hotel map and that would have been a nice touch. There were a lot of things that are standard in hotels, even cheap ones, and this one lacked, even though it’s supposed to be a boutique hotel and expensive at that. We even had to sign a waiver if we took the products from the room on check in which was poor. Made me feel like a criminal before we’d even got to the room. Any hotel bills you afterwards for anything that is taken, so this was strange. We stayed in the private pool villa, which was a mistake for 2 people, and the big kitchen was completely unstocked for use. For example: No moisturizer in the rooms No robes or slippers (cool floors - especially when raining) No bluetooth speaker anywhere so it was silent the whole time The pool area should be private, and was not. You could be seen from 3 sides easily. Kitchen had NOTHING to cook with, on or ANY utensils to cook with either. Ridiculous. There was a complimentary 5pm happy hour that was supposed to be each day. There was never one, and I saw other guests, like me hovering around the restaurant/bar area for this. We all dispersed back to our rooms each time as felt awkward asking. Poor. For the price this place is, We were very disappointed and would not go back there. Pretty, rough coastline (not really swimmable there) and lovely breakfasts, but that was it. Also worth noting that this is not on the beach and a long walk to town. They offer rides for $5 each way, but this should be complimentary based on their location and price. We were sad we didn’t stay where we were staying previously, and wished we hadn’t left the jungle area. Won’t go back.

This place has so much potential to be better but at the moment the negatives out-way the positives. So the positives • Beautiful setting with jungle walks to the rooms • Easy access to the beach (go left if you want beautiful beaches with minimal people and not to be hassled every 30 seconds or go right to Tamarindo if you want hussle and bustle, beach sellers hassling you and lots of people around) • I had the Harmony treatment at the spa and it was amazing, definitely worth trying the spa for something a little different as they combine different massage techniques. • Pool area is nice and you can have lunch at your sunlounger. • There are yoga classes on some mornings. Only one during our stay which I attended and was really good. • Food was good quality Negatives • Limited selection for food, the lunch and dinner menus are very similar and we struggled to pick something to eat. • Rooms are basic. The TV wasn’t programmed. The mini bar list was massive yet none of it is actually in the room. There is one can of coke between you and a couple of beers. Very poor selection given the list that said there was so much more. • No tea facilities in the room, just coffee maker and getting a tea at breakfast was something you had to ask for. • The safe is something out of the 80s and all the housekeeping team have an access key…so…um, not very safe really! • Our room was centrally located to the pool area and the breakfast/dinner and lunch areas which meant you could hear the music and the noise from the pool area meaning it wasn’t particularly peaceful and were unable to relax from the room. • We were full board and we had to tell every member of staff throughout the duration of our stay, we were presented with 2 separate bills at every meal yet upon checkout we were still billed for all meals excluding the breakfast! Make sure to check your bill providing what type of board basis you have paid for. It would be more helpful if there was a note on their system next to your room number to enable staff to know what to bill for and also to save the inconvenience of having to go through your final bill. I’m sure they’ve overcharged many people doing this which doesn’t sit right with us. • We booked with the hotel an arranged kayak tour, as stated on their website. The transfer from the hotel was a car that looked like it had been driven from the scrap yard. It did not look fit for road use. On arrival, we were greeted by the guide who gave us life jackets and water and then proceeded to row off a way in front with another family and leave us behind on the tour so we didn’t get to hear any information he was giving. The other family were shouting the info back to us. We then got out of the canoes to take a hike through some of the wetland in the mangroves which of course we weren’t prepared for as this wasn’t stated at booking, so flip flops were the only thing we had on our feet, not great for bog trekking!! After a failed hike we continued our little mangrove excursion by kayak heading back towards our final location. After leaving the guide our transfer back to the hotel was not there, we had to go back and ask the guide to contact him. After many attempts he got through and came and collected us. Again the vehicle was not fit for road use, the front drivers seat was completely broken. We did a lot of transfers during our trip and all other vehicles were more than adequate and felt much safer. Overall, would not stay here again.

The perfect hotel for the R&R part of our Costa Rica adventure. Our original booking was for May 2020. We had to postpone due to COVID and the hotel very kindly agreed to change our dates each time - thank you again Dixie! We finally made it on the 5th time of trying! A fabulous location at the quiet end of Tamarindo, but close enough to all the amenities. The hotel is stunning and beautifully designed. The rooms are very secluded from each other and set amongst beautiful gardens, which had lots of wildlife (we saw a variety of birds, howler monkeys, iguanas and raccoons). The rooms are very stylish, ours had its own little terrace complete with seat swing and hammock. The breakfast buffet was excellent. The dinner menu offered a good selection too. We booked the La Senda farm to table (including a walk around the labyrinth) one night and it was fabulous. The 3 course menu was amazing. We felt very privileged to have the Cala Luna head chef and menu creator with us explaining each course and the ingredients used. All the staff were lovely (reservations, reception, restaurant & bar staff, cleaning & gardening teams). Nothing was too much trouble. The sundowners on the beach were great! The free yoga was an added bonus. We were very sad to leave.

Location It’s a bit of out town, which we already knew. But given it was low season it felt a little isolating walking back from town at night on the road with only partial sidewalks. Never felt unsafe, just not central. Which can be good or bad depending on what you are looking for. Also it’s not on the beach, which you should be aware of. Grounds Beautiful area and surrounds, with a very secluded ‘in the jungle’ feel just walking between rooms. We saw howler monkeys on the site several time, and they even came up to hang out by the pool one time. We noted in prior reviews people had some disappointment about the rocky condition of the nearest beach access point. For our purposes, we much preferred the Langosta beach (3 min walk down a trail) to the main Tamarindo beach (~15 min walk). Langosta is not a swimming beach, unless you walk about 15 mins farther down, but if you have kiddos who just want to plunk around in tide pools, dig in sand and collect shells, it was great. Very quiet and beautiful, and though it was rocky in many spots there is still sand to walk along the entire stretch, it’s just sometimes high off the water line. The pool was nice, but it’s not ideal for kids. It drops off to pretty deep early on, and even the ‘shallow’ area is about 3.5-4’; there is one small section of the pool that is about a 1.5’ wading area. It would have been nice if there were more water dispensing spots around the grounds. They essentially just had two: one at the restaurant and one by the pool, and the one at the pool didn’t work. Rooms We ended up staying in two rooms during our trip: a few nights in the 2 bedroom suite w/pool and then a few in the king room. Both were generally nice and appropriately appointed for the price point, with a few exceptions. For the first room, the private pool was cool but honestly our 7yo kid mostly wanted to just go to the bigger pool, so keep that in mind if you have similar “bigger is better” kids. Also we found the mosquito population to be pretty aggressive around our small private pool area, which is nicely secluded but also has lots of foliage to house bugs. The smaller king room had a nicer bathroom, and overall felt like it might have been constructed more recently than the suite (not confirmed, just felt that way). Some things lacking in the rooms: not nearly enough towel hooks for a pool/beach kind of place (we frequently had towels and wet bathing suits hanging on curtain rods, lights, basically anything sticking out of the walls…); Dark - the rooms are just dark, even with all the lights on; the king room had a really cool, huge tub that we were looking forward to soaking in, however there isn’t enough hot water to fill it. We tried three separate times and each time ran out of hot water with the tub only filled about 3’, so we gave up. Service In general the service was great and the staff extremely friendly and helpful. There were a few times with the front desk that the service wasn’t quite on point, however (we had to ask for a couple things multiple times before it was done, and on a few occasions they just didn’t answer when we rang them). We were a little perplexed by some issues with available amenities. For instance, in generally things felt low staffed (front desk never had more than one person), which they chalked up to it being low season. Also, their main masseuse/health instructor was on vacation, so only about half the spa options were available. Also attributed to being low season. However, this was contradicted by the fact that at one time when inquiring about available rooms to switch to we were told that they were completely booked and had nothing. If they’re fully booked, why are they staffed like it’s low season? Seemed inconsistent. My wife got their signature “Lahari” treatment, which was about $200 USD and she was pretty disappointed. It didn’t really compare with other high end spas she’s used, including lacking things like a steam or shower, tea, water (you have to bring your own). Even the space felt more like a tent she said. And the massage itself was underwhelming for 90 mins. Maybe they had their ‘b-team’ masseuse in due to ‘low season’? Who knows. But she felt it was money wasted. The food was fantastic. We were there for a week so we did start to see a lot of repetition at the breakfast buffet, but as vegetarians we were delighted at the quality and variety of options for us. The coffee was a little weak, which was a bummer, so we ordered espressos each day a la carte. We at dinner and lunch there once each, and overall the food was really really tasty. Small menu (again, an abbreviated menu due to low season, and not what is online), but worth a visit. Summary Overall it was a wonderful stay and the overall quality of the experience was on par with what you’d expect at this price point and location, albeit with the handful of caveats noted above. Nothing was close to a deal breaker, and I’d still recommend the location to friends and family, though I do suspect it could be a little better all around if you go outside of low season.

From the time we walked out of baggage claim in Liberia, Hugo was waiting for us. He made us feel like family. Upon arriving Cala Luna, Sylvia got us checked in and we discussed side excursions with her explaining all the options. We decided to chill and book later. Later, we booked the Palo Verde river cruise, ranch lunch and nature day. FANTASTIC. Hugo and his son Josue' (Ho sway) escorted us and the adventure was amazing with seeing crocs, birds, monkeys and a traditional Costa Rican meal at a ranch cooked on an open fire. Sylvia also guided us to sign onto an ATV ride to see beautiful beaches. The next day we did her "zip-line" suggestion that was amazing. In all, I would definitely stay here again. From the pool area, is is a short walk to the beach where you may not see a soul. And by the way, the beds were super comfortable.

Cala Luna was really very delightful. The whole staff were wonderful and attentive. Carol, Ignacio, and Jhordan were all truly exceptional to us and we greatly appreciate their warmth and friendship. The grounds are lovely and nicely tucked back from the busier sections of Tamarindo. The only extremly minor complaint is the water pressure in our shower was weak and the hot water didn't last long enough for back to back showers after a swim in the ocean. The resort cats were a real treat if you are a cat lover like we are! Pura Vida!

We switched our plans and stayed Cala Luna after Andaz told us they would be doing construction during our stay. We had really wanted to stay at Andaz and if we knew what as going to happen at Cala Luna, we would have just stayed at Andaz instead. We were planning to have a 20th anniversary vow renewal in Costa Rica and wanted to make sure we had a beautiful and private place to celebrate. I should have known something was off with Cala Luna, when I was trying to make arrangements for the ceremony before our trip and was passed around to several employees after several left the company during the planning process. Still, I thought the place was beautiful and just hired an independent planner to help with our celebration since Cala Luna never followed through. We stayed in the 3 bedroom villa and looked forward to the private pool. We hosted our vow renewal and a private dinner in the house after-- the celebration went very late. The next morning at 7 am we were awoken by the sound of cutting metal and jackhammering about a foot from our bedroom window. We looked out to find that the next door neighbors were building a metal fence on the property line between our house and theirs. We spent the next two days with all day construction, horrible paint fumes, and strange men yelling to each other and walking through our yard/pool area. We could not use the outdoor space at all and we were woken up at 7am each day. When we brought this issue to the hotel manager, Donovan, he told us he would need to get in touch with the owners of the hotel to see if there was anything they could do. He offered to pay for our ride to the airport ($100), but other than that he took our money for incidentals and told us he would be in touch within a week after check out about any kind of compensation. I have no idea why he couldn't make a decision at the time but apparently they needed at least a week to figure it out. Two weeks passed after we left and I followed up several times with no response. Finally, Donovan sent me an email saying he spoke to the owners and they would not be giving us any kind of compensation for the inability to use the villa or sleep in without noise and fumes. The end. No apology, no offer to make it right. I wrote him back to ask him to reconsider, but he did not respond. And had seemingly no authority, even as the hotel manager, to offer us some type of compensation for the issues. Really unacceptable. This is a side note but some howler monkeys pooped a good amount on our driveway the first day we were there-- the poop was still there when we left 5 days later. Also, the cleaning crew came at different and odd times each day making for awkward interactions trying to avoid each other in the middle of the day. The hotel is beautiful and the breakfast was very good-- other meals were mediocre and very expensive, so we ate in those in town. The beach is lovely but not good for swimming or playing in and very rocky. Though it did make a beautiful backdrop for our vow renewal ceremony. We did enjoy the couples massage and sound bath group --but those were also expensive add ons. I feel disappointed that the hotel staff would not give a little to leave us feeling better about the construction. I understand it was not their property but an offer to compensate us rather than just not taking responsibility really left us with a sour taste about their service and level of concern for their guests. I cant upload the video I have but DM me if you want to see it.

We stayed in a 3BR villa in early August. The hotel is beautiful and set on stunning grounds, but the fell short on many things. The included breakfast was really great and delicious. The lunch was just ok and very pricey. We did have a great time seeing the monkeys on our roof and our friends had a terrific vow renewal celebration while we were there. For the most part, everything was ok with the room, but we had a big issue on the last two days with construction work going on at the house immediately behind ours (not CL property) We got woken up two mornings in a row at about 7am with sawing, soldering, and obnoxious paint fumes - not allowing us to utilize our private pool for two days. We have videos and photos I am attaching. They decided to put up a fence on the property line while we are there. We have emailed them many times to request a refund for the days we could not use our private villas backyard, but they have decided to not help us. They did give us a free ride to the airport, but that does not help that we were unable to use our yard for 2 days with workers right there. As you can see from my profile, I write many great reviews on trip advisor, and hardly and bad ones. We will not be back there and definitely not happy with our lack of solution to our issue.
