The hotel and staff were lovely. The Hotel is situated at a beautiful location just a short, tree-lined path from a beach with smooth white sand and fascinating tide pools. The sunsets were to die for. Of particular note was the chef--Hugo. The meals and the variety and innovation of the menus were fantastic. Hugo's enthusiasm for his craft and his dedication to producing high quality meals from locally-sourced and organically grown ingredients really made our stay remarkable. I would go back if only to dine in one of his kitchens again. In that regard, if you visit Cala Luna, be sure to sign up for the La Senda dinner offsite at the owner's property. Hugo's skills in the kitchen and his knowledge of the farmed vegetables on site were wonderfully showcased at this event beginning with the tour he conducted of the farm, and continuing through the beautiful, fairy-lit meal in the garden where you are seated at a long communal table and can swap travel stories with the other guests. It was one of the highlights of our trip.

Dear akaRiosSD, Thank you so much for your review! We're so glad that you enjoyed your time with us, and especially at La Senda. We believe in creating paradise where you are, which is why we made a farm into home. A place where we could practice sustainable living, and invite others to see our efforts. Hugo is a genius, and as I'm sure he told you, the dinner you enjoyed was sourced almost entirely from the farm you toured, in fact, almost all of the food in Cala Luna comes from our farm, that way we can insure that it is sustainably produced, and %100 organic. We'll be sure to pass on your compliments to the chef, and we hope to see you soon! -The Cala Luna Team

We enjoyed our stay at the Cala Luna Hotel. Our first evening, we enjoyed the complimentry drinks on the beach where we met the hotel chef, Hugo. We dinned at the hotel that night and it was fantastic. He also recommended the table dinner at the hotel owners property. Given his charismatic nature and how excellent the dinner was the first night at the hotel we rearranged certain activities to the La Senda dinner at the owner property during our stay. We toured the gardens and enjoyed a most excellent meal. Hugo has worked at Michelin rated restaurants and this meal proved it. As for the hotel, our villa was lovely and the staff kept it clean for us daily. I enjoyed their healing mediation as well as had a healing massage and I can say both were deeply relaxing experiences. I would recommend Cala Luna not only for the quality of the hotel, but because they have excellent staff and their chef, Hugo is amazing.

After vacationing at a couple of big all-inclusives in recent years, we decided on a change of pace and find a smaller, quieter hotel and atmosphere. As vegans (one of whom also needs to be gluten-free) the menu was also very important. And we wanted to find a place that tries to approach things as 'eco aware' as possible... We scored big time with Cala Luna... Beautiful grounds, delicious food and super friendly staff. We loved the intimate, quiet setting - the paths surrounded by lush plants and foliage that are ecologically watered with 'grey water'. Our room was comfortable and we loved the sense of privacy created by the layout and landscaping. On this trip, the beach was the goal for me - a relaxing place of salty air, warm wind and toasty sand...and the super short walk from the hotel every morning leads to the perfect place for me. You really can't swim or surf right here - but if you like crashing waves, cool rocks, tidal pools, and very few people nearby - then this spot is it. Beach therapy. We went into Tamarindo a few times - at first paying the 5$US hotel shuttle fee, then we tried walking it and found it wasn't that bad. Takes about 20-25 minutes depending on your speed... Tamarindo provides a little injection of busyness and urban 'chaos'. Great for a little visit and a meal... and then we would go back to the serenity of Cala Luna... We totally recommend doing the dinner excursion at La Senda. Great food and also finding out more about the behind-the-scenes and the 'mission statement' of the hotel. Maybe book this early in your stay so that you can get to know a few of your fellow hotel guests. A couple of suggestions for the hotel - a chair inside the room would be great. We totally missed the 'once a week' night market in Tamarindo because it happened the day we arrived and we only found out a couple days later - would have been good to know about that as we checked in... but these are very minor suggestions. The whole week was terrific!

Dear seizedave, Thank you so much for your review! You hit the nail on the head, we seek to cater to those looking for an exclusively authentic experience, something that is tough to find in the bigger hotel chains. Cala Luna is family owned and operated, and many of the members of our own family are committed to living both vegan and gluten free lifestyles, for that reason we know how frustrating it can be to not find proper options on a menu, and we vowed that it would never be the case in our hotel. As such we found a chef that loves to get creative with multiple styles of cooking; that way our guests can have a luxurious experience no matter what. Thank you as well for your suggestions, we will definitely take them into account and start making improvements in the areas that you mentioned. See you soon! -The Cala Luna Team

You need to be clear what kind of vacation you are looking for. If you want to feel like you are in Costa Rica and you want organically sourced, eco friendly and sustainable food and room supplies then this is your place. Don't have an expectation of hot water baths and some of the other unrealistic expectations. This hotel endevours to stay in harmony with nature so you may see a crawly creature. That's because it's part of the eco system. which needs to remain intact. The food is exceptional. A little pricy but that's in keeping with CR and a lot of the food is sourced from La Senda making it organic, seasonal and sustainable. The staff are awesome. We had 1 grumpy driver but we kept that in perspective. The rooms are cleaned everyday and linen is changed as per your desire. You'll probably not have used a better shampoo and conditioner. I would buy that. The beach - there are 2 high tides every day and this changing of the tides is a phenomenal experience. There are lots of lava rocks right in front of the hotel and you can walk out on them when tide is low and explore and discover many many craters and pools with sea life left there as the tide recedes. Some pools are big enough to sit and soak in. The one right in front of the hotel I cal Recovery pools. I very much enjoyed this diverse ocean experience. If you prefer to swim free of rocks then you can walk up the beach 10 mins south and it opens up to a big sandy beach with lots of space for swimming and surfing. 25 mins to the south and you're in Tamarindo with another big sandy beach. There's also the hotel pool. The main drag. Who comes to Playa Langosta for the main drag. If that's what you want then stay in Tamarindo. Tamarindo is a 25 min beach walk away - in low tide. It gets hot but if you hug the coast line there is some shade to be had. You can also walk in by road which takes a little bit less time as you're not walking on sand. It's a great way to burn the extra calories that you are probably taking in. That said, I think Cala Luna should consider 2 free return shuttles a day. It really is less than a five min drive and would go a long way to offset the cringe of paying USD$5. per trip. On the issue of the nightly rate. It's up there. It was a little steep for us but every time I thought that I reminded myself of the included breakfast buffet. It's a wonderful spread. A lot of home made goodness. There's more to say but I'm afraid this probably too long already.

Dear Sharon L, Thank you so much for your kind and well written review! It is rare for us to come upon someone who has as complete an understanding of our vision and of what we're doing as you do, and we appreciate it! We want every guest to feel like they're waking up in paradise every single day, but we also want to give them the chance to have some introspection, and find a greater connection with the environment. That's why we try so hard to make this a place where everything can live in harmony. We will definitely take your suggestions into account in our next management meeting to begin to make improvements. See you soon! -The Cala Luna Team

I’m a bit torn on what review to give this hotel. I would happily give this hotel five stars if it were priced say around $200 a night, however, I paid around $300 or more a night, and for that, I’ll have to give it 4 stars max. There’s nothing wrong with the hotel itself, it’s beautiful, the staff was great, it’s very pleasant, there’s a monkey family that lives in the trees, the food is great, it has breakfast included, however I just can’t see how these kind of prices are justified in Costa Rica. The fact that you can stay at the the 4 Seasons Hotel in Vail, Colorado for $350-$400 a night, makes this a hard pill to swallow. CONS: This hotel is a little bit of a treck from the main strip, so it requires you to walk or bike everyday, so those with mobility issues should be aware of that. You can rent a golf cart for $70 a day, which is very expensive. There is also a hotel shuttle, but you have to pay for that as well. Water- if you like hot Showers don’t stay at this hotel. The water gets lukewarm at best, and doesn’t last long. They have a cool bathtub in the room, however you actually can’t fill it up unless you want a cold bath. We asked the front about it, and they simply said that usually people in Costa Rica want cold baths, so it doesn’t need to be hot or warm. You can’t swim at the beach at this hotel. Our room was very, very basic, and underwhelming. There’s also no gym, for those that like to workout.
