This B&B was recommended by a friend who has a house in Montolieu but we couldn't stay there as another couple, mutual friends, had beaten us to it! We were not disappointed as Nathalie was a delightful host & the room was great, with a balcony overlooking the bridge at the top of the village. Nothing was any trouble &... More

If you come to Montolieu on holiday, you come either to look at second-hand book shops, or to visit the surrounding countryside. The Maison Rives is an excellent base. It is situated at the top end of the village, by a very picturesque bridge. There are some great photos to be had from the other side of the bridge looking... More

Two couples, from Texas (USA) and Dublin (Ireland), stayed 18 and 19 September, 2013 The house is larger than it appears from the front, it dates to the late 17th century, and is a delight to visit. The rooms we received are large and comfortable with excellent beds and a seating area with table, and there were interesting artefacts and... More

It is almost a year since we stayed here, but thought it important to point out that this place is no longer under the same management, which is no doubt why we were very disappointed with our stay. Our room was just adequate,if in need of refurbishment, but dinner was mediocre and extremely poor value.Frankly,we were surprised to be offered such an unappetising meal... Bonsoir from Montolieu ! I just wonder how some people, one year later can spend so much time to explain again how horrible we are and how bad i cooked and how terrify and dirty our house was !!!!??? I just feel surprise how unlucky or vindictive some individual could be !!! Excuse me if I imagine you get some... More

I stayed at Maison Rives three weeks ago and having read the report by ‘Hilary C.’, and then Nathalie’s response, I feel compelled (a) to translate into English some of the salient points, (in case Hilary C’s understanding of French is equal to their knowledge of what a chambre d’hôte and good cooking are) and (b) to mention my own... I think this place has changed hands as we didn't have a genial hostess called Cathy. The owners who were there were welcoming but that is where our pleasure at our choice ended. Our rooms were basic with mis-matched curtains (photos available), the rooms did not have coffee making facilites,TV, or hairdryer. Most places these days place a bottle of... More

We stayed here just one night on our way through the Black Mountains. The town of Montolieu is a wonderful little place - well worth stopping in. Perched on the slopes at the bottom of the mountains, over a deep, narrow river gorge it is very old, quiet with multiple old book stores and wine shops. Maison Rives was right... More

We stayed for a week during August having booked a last minute break based on the positive reviews here and we couldn't have found a nicer B & B if we'd searched for months. Cathy was a fantastic host and the accommodation was faultless. Our room was spacious and bright with a lovely balcony to enjoy the Languedoc sunshine. The... More

We were lucky to find Maison Rives during an exhaustive search for the perfect accommodation to begin our first trip to France, and we hit the jackpot! Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Maison Rives, dating back to before the French Revolution, has a history as fascinating as Montolieu itself. The furnishings in all the rooms compliment perfectly the natural light pouring through the windows. Whether your view is over the bridge and the Alzeau Gorge or down a village street, all our rooms are spacious, light and airy and have en-suite facilities. Enjoy breakfast downstairs in the salon, where we can help you plan your day or find your way if you wish.We also propose diner and organise thematic courses :- Innovative cooking courses with regional, organic produce.- Walks and initiation in photography.- Training in calligraphy.Montolieu—originally Montis Olivis, or Mount of Olives—sits atop a rocky ridge separating the Alzeau and Dure Rivers at the foot of the Montagne Noire, welcoming its many admirers. Surrounded by Cathar castles, caves, abbeys, forests, rolling fields, clear-running rivers and lakes, this pretty village in the Aude region of France has an historical pedigree to match its natural beauty. Among its ancestors are Charlemagne and Colbert; the former founded the Monastery of St. Jean de Mallast in 800 AD; the latter, Louis XIV’s minister, established a Royal Manufactory that exported high-quality woollen cloth. In 1146, the Viscount of nearby Carcassonne fortified the village. It’s early inhabitants—those who weren’t nuns or monks—first made their living working the rich vineyards and olive groves; they also tamed the river torrents to run water mills, which powered highly successful textile and paper plants. As the times changed and ‘progress’ brought those heady days of success to an end more than fifty years ago, a community of more than 3,000 shrank to around 900. A book lover stepped in to motivate the modern-day renaissance of Montolieu as a book village—a village du livre. Today, the village is on the itinerary of many visitors every year. Non-bibliophiles, too, love the place, and are happy to leave their book-addicted companions to browse the shops while they indulge in the many outdoor activities afforded by Montolieu’s natural and historic wealth.Access:We are 15 miles from Carcassonne. Take the road towards Toulouse D.6113 then after crossing the village of Pezens, turn right on D.38 towards Montolieu book village. We are located just opposite the tourist office next Stéphane library's "Ailleurs" and Nathalie's organic restaurant "Salon d'Ici". ... more   less
