I'm writing this review in the hopes that it will help other travellers. I will try keep this as objective as possible. 1. In line with 50% of reviews on Trip Advisor, the guesthouse is not the cleanest hostel you'll find - I could go in to detail but no one needs to read an essay on unsanitary conditions. I'll sum it up by saying excessive dust, dirt and cockroaches 2. Most people come to stay here to join tours for the Pamir Highway (as recommended by Lonely Planet) but it's not necessary. We arrived at the end of the season and there was hardly anyone staying at the hostel. It is possible to stay at other hostels and contact the tour company (and I would recommend other companies) for a hook up - you don't need to stay at the hostel to make contacts. If you stay here, typically, they'll only want you to take a tour with them. You'll find travellers staying all over the place, so it doesn't have to be this hostel. 3. Our experience was an interesting experience one. We arrived at the guesthouse and spoke with the tour agency linked with the guesthouse. We told them that we were already in contact with another driver from another agency. They seemed nice and told us they could possibly make us a better deal, but they wanted to know who the driver was and how much he was charging beacuse "apparently" they didn't want to take business away from certain drivers. Seemed plausable. In good faith, we told them. We met with our driver and he was great guy so we decided to accept his offer of $850USD (it was off peak season). As a courtesy to Osh guesthouse, we went back to tell the agency that we wouldn't be using their services. During the conversation with the agency, a driver working for Osh guesthouse secretly videotaped our conversation and then sent the video to every driver in Osh stating the low rate we were paying, which was against some driver unions terms. This then went viral and our driver refused to drive us for less than $1000USD. Long long long story short, we agreed the pay the $1000USD but the experience (especially the secret video taping) left a bitter taste. 4. Walking away from the experience, it was hard to tell if the interactions at Osh were ever genuine. They'll use the following tactics to sell you a tour: *Show you a file of their previously booked customers and show organised they seem. They'll highlight the prices of their previous customers so they can inflate the prices. (Nevermind the breach in privacy in showing the photocopies of passports of their customers) *Tell you that any km veered off the main road will cost you 64cents/km. Which is fine except most other itineraries include the extra stops which they don't include *Lie and say they've booked other customers from caravanista for a higher price (we bumped in to these same "customers" afterwards and realised they definitely had not booked through Osh) Side note: apparently the extra $150 goes directly to the driver as profit, so this isn't so bad because he was an awesome driver. It just felt like we didn't need to get dragged into the middle of driver politics. Side side note: when we arrived at our hostel in Dushanbe we met other travellers who had booked the same tour for $900USD (off peak). During peak, you'll probably have less bargaining power because there is so much demand, you'll also have less choice when it comes to drivers, so do your research. Lesson here: business is conducted very differently in Osh. They apparently have minimum prices they can charge during different seasons - this is to protect their industry. The driver network is extremely close and everyone knows everyone. So if you're posting on caravanista, they already know who you are. In fact, there are two or three major players that have a huge influence in the market so be mindful of who you are getting quotes from. They wanna make a buck and you wanna save a buck. Play your cards close, and if you get a good deal, keep it to yourself.

While seemingly the place to coordinate a Pamirs trip, this batch of soviet holdover apartments needs some serious help in terms of facilities and cleanliness. The double room we stayed was cockroach and mosquito infested, had broken fixtures, and no fan or air conditioning to speak of making our night unbearable. Staff were friendly and helpful compensating a bit for the shabby facilities. I’d recommend getting info here and staying elsewhere. Coordinate your Pamir trip using other means available on the internet.

The “Pudding Shop” in Istanbul was a gathering place in and information center for hippies heading across Europe and Asia by bus. It was the start of the hippy trail, in some sense, and how people found each other. While the hippy trail is long dead and gone, Osh Guesthouse has the vibes of a modern day “Pudding Shop”; it’s a meeting place for travelers. It’s the most famous meeting place in Osh. And I don’t know if I’d call it “luxury” but it certainly gets the job done. When I arrived I was looking for someone to do the Pamir Highway with. Osh Guesthouse networked for me, found candidates (some whom unfortunately had visa problems) and arranged the car and driver for us. It took two days but, given that I just showed up, I thought that was pretty good. If the Tajik visa website was working I think it might’ve taken only a day. The driver we went with was safe, friendly, hard working, and most of all trustworthy. While Tajikistan is a safe country with regards to crime by virtually any standard the driver certainly kept an eye out on our stuff (in a good way). The guesthouses on the highway were also vetted well and no issues came up.

I spent 5 nights in Osh Guesthouse and I was very satisfied. It is well located, many shops and restaurants nearby and only a short walk to the center of Osh. The rooms were nice and clean, the amenities are not new, but it is still good value for money. I can certainly recommend this place if you are trying to organize a tour to Pamir Highway. The staff was very knowledgeable and helpful. They helped me find other travel buddies for the tour and we booked the trip through Osh Guesthouse. Everything went very smoothly and the trip was fantastic! In general, the staff was really nice and they speak perfect English and German.
