A mere three (and a bit) hour drive from Cape Town, Lekkerwater Beach Lodge at De Hoop is the former Camp David of FW de Klerk, and now offers a luxury stay on this pristine six kilometre stretch of private beach. This is some of the best land-based whale watching on the planet, and there's the reserve to explore as well.

If you love nature, prefer to stay away from mass tourism, and are after a great, relaxing experience, this is the place to go to. We spent three amazing days at the lodge, everything was just perfect. Friendly, extremely caring staff, great food, very nice rooms with breathtaking views, and permanent show on the sea with whales literally passing by your windows. I can only highly recommend this place.

The memory of our visit to Lekkewater will stay with me for a long time. It is a very special spot surrounded by nature. You feel happy and alive the moment you arrive and it stayed with me the whole time I was there. It is not only the surroundings that give this feeling, it is the friendly, helpful and professional staff who make this lodge run very efficiently. The emphasis is to make it your home. As soon as I walked into our room, I was in awe of the beauty and the view. My immediate thought was that I will book again - this time for longer! I loved how so much thought went into making the design and operations as green and as environmentally friendly as possible. And lots of little details - the map explaining the history of Lekkerwater in the main living section, the interesting booklet in the room giving information about the fynbos, the history, the art etc. We did an exceptional marine walk with Jo which was meditative and relaxing looking for life in the rock pools at low tide. The food is top notch and delicious. It is a place to totally unwind, made easier by the constant sound of the sea. I highly recommend it - at least a 3 night stay. Just book!

We were lucky enough to stay once again at Lekkerwater Beach Lodge. My only concern was that it could not possibly compare to the sensational stay we had last time in 2020, just before Covid. I needn't have worried - once again Lekkerwater surpassed all possible expectations. There simply are not enough superlatives for this place; the staggering views, the miles of pristine beach, the dazzling variety of the fynbos. Every day brough fresh wonders, we saw a super-pod of way over 1000 bottlenose dolphins, we spotted rare hump back dolphins just yards from the beach - then - a school of hammerhead shark! And on our last day - scores of bottlenose dolphins surfing the waves and somersaulting as if to say goodbye. We loved Matt's thoughtful guiding - he is a fount of fynbos and marine life knowledge. The whole staff is superb, the accommodation divine, the food fabulous. We will be back - hopefully for 5 days this time as 2 or 3 just isn't enough; we really look forward to learning more from Lee about the extraordinary human history of this place and to getting to know more about the fynbos which is endlessly fascinating. We know it's been incredibly tough to keep things going through floods and covid which makes the thoughtfulness of the team and their dedication to excellence all the more appreciated. THANK YOU for being part of the essential work of looking after this precious and awe inspiring nature reserve.

There is very little I can fault Lekkerwater on. From the booking process, communication it was all professional. The drive is a bit rough and a high rise vehicle is definitely needed or else it would take very long to reach the parking area. They take you onto comfortable Safari trucks down into perfect paradise. The views are just raw, untouched nature. Everyone is very helpful and kind and let you go at your own pace whilst staying there. No pressure to do too much if you simply want to unwind. Great selection of wines, and you certainly won't ever be hungry. The chefs whip up a great, hearty selection of meals. The rooms are comfortable, a little smaller than anticipated but the views do make up for it. There is a great hot tub experience on the beach which really added relaxation to another level. Sundowners each evening make sunset even more magical and it is a very secluded stay. The pods of dolphins are visible by the naked eye. Without a doubt recommend Lekkerwater to unwind, unplug and for some downtime.

We stayed for three nights and wish we could have stayed longer. It feels like a luxury cabin at the end of the world away from everything. The cabins are done in a rustic style and very tasteful. We had the Seal cabin which we thought had the best view so we were very lucky. I could have sat for hours on the balcony watching the sea. Simply stunning. The cabins also have a wood burning stove which they light while you’re at dinner so when you come back the cabin is lovely and warm. The hot tub has to be one of the best hot tubs in the world. The view from it is incredible. The staff were all extremely helpful and friendly and the food was great. They set up sundowners in different locations each day and the ones on the beach with the rock bar were an amazing way to end our stay. A unique experience that I won’t forget in a hurry.

it is rare to find a place that is so isolated, yet so entirely nurturing. Perched up on the dunes, this intimate lodge offers a glimpse in to the Indigenous people who once subsisted here on this rich coastline. Only seven units means its ideal for sole-use or book it by the room. Warm hospitality, fresh and delicous meals, plenty of bubbly to enjoy in the wood-fired hot-tub, rock pools to explore and more fynbos to marvel at than you can imagine. Book out the place if you can, bring you friends and family, and immerse yourself in a few days of whales, wild beaches and plenty of special moments - all while not seeing one other person!

Lekkerwater Lodge popped up on my Facebook and we decided to give it a go as we had been wanting to go to the De Hoop Reserve for a long time. Nicely surprised by the nice rooms, comfortable lounge, and great kitchen! We spent 3 nights there, and the food was excellent. The guide, Billy, does a fantastic G&T sundowner down at the beach on the first evening. The whole feel of Lekkerwater is about being at home, and with only 6 units, it is never too busy and you can socialise with the other guests (or not). We also enjoyed the fynbos walk, and the beach walk, which were very informative and while we didn't swim in the sea, we had an extremely relaxing time. This is perfect for a romantic weekend break or for a long weekend, only 3 hours' drive from Cape Town. Be aware though, that the drive includes about 60km of gravel road, most of which is in very good condition. But the last 15km from the De Hoop gate to the lodge's parking lot is not really suitable for low-slung sedans, SUVs would be preferable.

Lekkerwater was an experience of a lifetime and 3 nights was just not enough. We were a group of 10 with exclusive use of the lodge. The staff made us all feel at home and are just simply all fantastic individuals. The marine walk was without a doubt the most fascinating thing I have experienced on this earth and would highly recommend to anyone that visits Lekkerwater. Our guide, Billy, has endless knowledge of the land and seas and is one of the most lekker guys you will meet. The food was superb. Prepared with care and love and always fresh. Breakfast, lunch and dinner was always a highlight. We all had an incredible experience and are very grateful to all the staff that made is so special. We will be back again for sure. Cheers to Lekkerwater and to all of the people involved. Thank you.

We were a group of 10 with exclusive use of the lodge. All the staff were efficient and welcoming. The rooms are spacious, simply luxurious and very comfortable. All thave fabulous views of the sea and surrounding fynbos. Falling asleep and waking up to the sound of the breaking waves was a highlight. The locally sourced and grown food was delicious and prepared with such care. The guided walks with Billy and Matt were excellent - it felt like they really enjoyed sharing their extensive knowledge with us. Thank you to all. We had the best time!
