A mere three (and a bit) hour drive from Cape Town, Lekkerwater Beach Lodge at De Hoop is the former Camp David of FW de Klerk, and now offers a luxury stay on this pristine six kilometre stretch of private beach. This is some of the best land-based whale watching on the planet, and there's the reserve to explore as well.

We booked the family suite and a separate room for my mom. Both were stunning, quiet, and clean. Great views and activities. Safari type idea on the ocean, so all the food and activities are included. It was a lot of fun for the kids to explore and play. Food was spectacular, as were the drinks for the sundowner. We really enjoyed the stay because we had wonderful guests who were fun to be around and not annoyed to spend their special weekend with our family. Since you eat at one big table for all your meals, you get to know the guests and it makes it special. the staff went above and beyond and we have recommended this place to everyone we know.

The drive to the lodge after the turnoff in Bredasdorp took longer than I anticipated, but it could also be due to the roadworks that was happening in one section. Once you pay the conservation fee at the CapeNature gate they radio the Lodge to advise them that you have "arrived". The parking area is safe, and this is where you are collected and transferred to the lodge. You are welcomed into the "family" on arrival, with welcome drink and snacks as well, then you are shown to your room to sloowwwly unpack and enjoy the views from your deck. No matter which room you are in, the views are superb. The pace is slow, and you decide what activities to take part in. The nature and marine walks were very interesting and Billy is extremely knowledgeable. Delicious South African inspired meals are held family style in the dining area and a great way to get to know your fellow guests. The lodge is very proud of their eco footprint, and staff give an informative talk about the history of the lodge and the area. Highly recommended and would say that a 3 night stay should be minimum! A huge thank you to all the staff for looking after and feeding me so well.

Stayed at Lekkerwater for two nights and it was incredible. I would highly recommend it. Everything from accommodation, staff to activities was top quality. It’s a great way to learn about South African culture, food and history as well as immerse yourself in the beautiful country. Billy is very knowledgeable and passionate about what he does and we loved doing the marine walk with him. The food was delicious, thanks to Don and the team. I loved the attention to detail and the chance to eat great South African dishes. Les and Rene were very accommodating and great hosts. Nothing was too much to ask! Just something to be aware of, you do drive along a dirt/gravel road. We were in a high car which made the drive much more pleasurable but it is possible to drive in a lower car. Don’t let it put you off. It’s worth it.

Our travel agent (Insolita Capetown) recommended us Lekkerwater Beach Lodge when staying at De Hoop. As soon as we arrived we felt at home! We were welcomed by the amazing Billy, Bianca and Karla who offered us a delicious arrival treat prepared by the wonderful in-house chef. We were in the “dolphin” room and we were literally greeted by a pod of dolphins that passed right in front of our room as soon as we entered. The lodge offers various activities, we walked in the gorge with Billy, who is extremely knowledgeable about the flora and fauna in the area and he also took us on a marine walk in the morning. Billy was able to transmit his passion and love for his work as he was explaining to us everything we saw around us, from the octopus hidden under a rock to a tiny sea snail. We will never forget the sunset drinks before dinner together with Bianca, Billy’s stories and the other delightful guests that were staying with us. Would highly recommend this beautiful place and we do hope to come back soon one day!! Thank you to everyone for making it such a wonderful stay for us!! Cristina & Bennie

Exceeded all our expectations which were already high! Such a privilege to be in this pristine and unique place. Paradise perfected. Thank you to the whole team - but special mention has to go to Billy - our Guide and host - he is a one-off! A prop forward with the soul of a poet and encyclopedic knowledge of fynbos and marine flora and fauna. It is impossible to explain the wonder of Lekkerwater and it's outstanding team - unforgettable, you just have to go.
