To us this was as good and traditionsl as Japan can get! The house might be a bit dated but absolutly stunning and charming! English knowledge especially of our roommaid/waitress was perfect, the room most traditional, the baths (there are 4 different ones and also for couples) amazing and the food beautifully arranged and of course 100% Japanese. We loved... More

Arai ryokan is a very old one, boasting famous Japanese as guests. The entry is nicely appointed, with a bridge connecting the main hall with most of the old buildings, overlooking an internal garden with a pond and Koi swinning inside. The building is very old and the hotel quite traditiona;, so do not expect too many modern elements. The... More

We enjoy a day trip to Izu-Shuzenji-Onsen. Shuzenji is 2-hours from Tokyo. Arai Ryokan has 140 years history and is ranked ☆☆ in Michelin. We can enjoy traditional Japanese style of wooden structures and food. And off course, we enjoy Hot Springs. This plan we could only enjoy staying there from 11:30am-15:00pm but we were very satisfied.

It was a great experience staying in this ryokan. Beautiful gardens, koi ponds, even the walkways and lobby. Some fixtures show their age, but I was informed that there are renovations ongoing, so maybe these will be fixed. I had a fantastic view from my room. Beautiful bamboo and river and the red bridge, simply stunning. There is only wifi... More

The Arai is a building of the XIXth century, fairly interesting. It is one of those inns, though, as I read in a Japanese guide, more interested in their tradition than in accommodating the guests. They have a old and beautiful bath for the men. Being obliged to open it to women, it is, but at the inconvenient time of... More

My family of four loved this ryokan. Getting to izu was an adventure!!! The town is very cute and beautiful. Arai ryokan was very easy to find as it's the most famous in the town. Our room was so beautiful, with a view over the very green garden. They have five onsen baths you can use in the hotel. We... More

This was a great Ryokan for 1 night. Easy to get to. It felt like old historical japan. Located right in the center of town. The baths were just splendid. outdoors and indoor options. They even have one you can reserve privately for about $10, I and my wife and baby used it. Brand new and beautiful. They have cool... More

Location is a distance from the train station, you will need to take a taxi. Although there is a bus goes towards the hotel direction, it is still a walk from the bus-stop. There are some shops and restaurants around the areas, but be prepared many closed after 7.00 pm. This is a traditional Japanese ryokan experience, service was very... More

Nice as a traditional Japanese ryokan experience but the hot baths are not impressive, and probably a more authentic experience would be to go the pubic baths outside the hotel. Service however was very good and attentive (no English though) and the food was very good. All in all a nice experience but I would not rush there, and definitely... More
