After an initial 15 minute wait for our table everything went smoothly. The garden surroundings are beautiful and being joined by the noisy white peacock was quite special. The drinks menu was varied but we were disappointed that it was one only one drink each and no top ups ( which I have had at other establishments very similar to this) . There was a teapot each but this soon got cold as it was served a little in advance of the tea. The tea , consisted of what’s you would expect, eg sandwiches, scones and cakes but the addition of a savoury tart and sausage roll were delicious and very welcome. Overall it was a delightful experience.

The castle itself is both historic and photogenic; and the staff are both welcoming and helpful( though getting the waiters attention was a real problem): but dont spend £80 on “tea for two”! Being charitable it could be such a lovely experience ,sitting out on the lawn on a sunny day ,but the tea itself though not a ripoff should have been top of the range to match the setting and it was not What was wrong?First of all our tea pots came with no accompanying jugs of hot water for top ups . Then the cucumber sandwiches were inedibly soggy;the eggrolls had little egg but lots of roll: the smoked salmon was generous and excellent .. but was served in an enormous bread roll ,not slivers of brown bread. Petits fours were OK but were almost certainly not home made : and where were the slices of home made cake?Scones were deliciously warm and home made ,but came (initially )with just one mean little pot of clotted cream( 2 more came on request). There was no choice of jam and the jam provided tasted uninspiringly supermarket ..and came without a spoon. Only half the tables had parasols so we (and others )sat in blazing sun. Judging by the looks on other peoples faces we were not the only people who thought it could and should ( in a Stately Home)have been done a whole lot better!A small glass of champagne each would have helped too!

We had afternoon tea, it was a lovely June day so managed to sit out in the gardens. Just so beautiful, looking at the well kept gardens, listening to the birds & water running. Such a huge choice of teas & coffees. Delicious mini quiches & warm scones.Watch out for the famous white peacocks, the male is very tame & my Mum isn't a fan of birds at close contact!
