Travelers' Choice
A unique luxury hotel located in the picturesque village of Amberley at the foot of the South Downs. Privately owned by Andrew and Christina Brownsword, this magnificent 900-year-old castle is enclosed by a 60 foot high curtain wall and portcullis that remains open, behind which you will discover an enchanting hotel offering the highest standards of food and service. Bedrooms are resplendent with the luxurious facilities you would expect from a country house hotel. History encompasses every part of this wonderful building and the many acres of gardens it stands in. Enjoy discovering our tennis courts, 18-hole putting green and croquet lawn, and even our resident peacock roaming the grounds. For those seeking tranquillity and relaxation, there are many quiet corners to discover under the shade of a tree or by the fireside.

We had afternoon tea and everything was absolutely amazing. The ambiance, the service, the afternoon tea it’s self was all 10/10. The castle is beautiful and the grounds and garden is so well maintained. The waiter and waitresses were incredibly attentive and friendly despite it being 30 degrees. I usually find afternoon tea looks better than it tastes, but this wasn’t the case here. Each sweet/savoury was incredible tasting and attention to detail was amazing. We sat in the garden and listening to little waterfall was the cherry on the cake due to it being so tranquil. Had lots of afternoon teas in the past, all round the country and this is one of my favourites. Thank you so much to the servers and the chefs we appreciated your hard work so much and had a lovely afternoon.

Stunning location, attentive staff and fabulous food. A cut above the ordinary afternoon tea. Great selection of savoury and sweet followed by scones and cream! We did not feel rushed and enjoyed 3 hours relaxing in a beautiful garden.

From the moment we arrived we knew it would be a special afternoon. The staff were very attentive and helpful and the tea, sandwiches, savouries, cakes and scones were absolutely delicious! I am lactose intolerant and I was very appreciative of the effort which had gone into my food to ensure my experience was as yummy as the rest of the family’s. I thoroughly recommend Amberley Castle for a special treat in an absolutely beautiful setting.

We enjoyed a nice dinner which proves that the kitchen is excellent. The service though is not very welcoming nor flexible, except the sommelier is more service oriented and has a good knowledge of the wines. The lighting to the car park is too limited which can lead to a dangerous situation.

The breath taking drive up to the castle suggested we were in for something special and we were not disappointed. The reception could not have been more helpful and we felt at home very quickly. Beautiful surroundings where you are free to roam and for our stay beautiful weather which made this even more enjoyable. We have a cream tea in the secluded garden and while sipping our bubbles decided to come back one day for the full afternoon tea that others were having. The evening meal in appearance, taste and service was only eclipsed by the thought of eating in the same ancient room as royalty may have been during previous centuries. A good sleep in a comfy bed took us round to the morning when the choice of what to chose for breakfast became our challenge. I for one wanted everything but that would take a lot more stays! A final walk around trying to record with camera shots the beauty of the castle and grounds made us feel very lucky that our "bucket list" accomplishment was well worth it being one. Overall, an excellent was and very special way to celebrate an occasion.

A wonderful afternoon tea at Amberley. From the initial drive up towards the stunning castle to the moment we left, there is not a single moment that isn’t WOW! We were greeted at reception by very friendly staff even though traffic had caused us to be late for our booking. The lawn is beautiful and incredibly peaceful to sit outside. Each large round table has a parasol for shade from the sun if you wish. There is an extensive tea menu (also coffees and various hot chocolates too). The food….. well what can I say, it is WONDERFUL. We were served the traditional sandwiches and cakes on a stand, and also a warm freshly made mini quiche and sausage roll which are absolutely out of this world! There are several incredibly attentive and friendly staff to cater for your every request. The freshly baked scones are kept warm until you are ready for them. The whole experience is absolutely delightful and a superb choice for a special gift or time out with friends or family. The grounds are open to wander around and are as beautifully kept as the rest of the castle. If you are Lucky, you may meet Bob, the resident white peacock! All in all this is the best afternoon tea in the best surroundings that I have ever been fortunate enough to enjoy. I will definitely be back, and if you are reading this, you should definitely book!! Thank you Amberley for a very much needed escape for the day ❤️❤️

I really love an afternoon tea! Who doesn't? This has to be up there as one of my favourites. The venue is stunning. I treated my friend for her birthday as my son and his partner had visited and really enjoyed their experience. We were really fortunate as the weather was perfect, a beautiful, warm, sunny day, and we were able to enjoy our tea outside on the garden patio. The server we had was so lovely and couldn't have been more helpful. Other members of staff we spoke to were all very welcoming and friendly, too. The afternoon tea itself offered a more extensive menu then just sandwiches, cakes and scones. It also included toasted sandwich and warm savoury pastries. It was all delicious and substantial. We came home with a box containing the items we just couldn't manage to finish despite our best efforts. The price is very reasonable and we never felt rushed by staff to vacate after our time was up. If you are in the area or looking for a day out, I would whole heartedly recommend booking afternoon tea at Amberley Castle. It really was delightful.

Amazing historic buildings sensitively developed into a high quality hotel, with well designed comfortable rooms. The lounges and outdorr terrace provide space to relax. The restaurant is in a beautiful room and the food was really exceptional. Highly recommended.
