Amanjiwo (peaceful soul) overlooks Borobudur, the world's largest Buddhist sanctuary, in the rural heartland of Central Java. Located in one of the most scenic parts of the country, the Menoreh Hills rise up behind and no less than four volcanoes grace the horizon. Amanjiwo provides the opportunity for immersion in Javanese culture, offering trips to ceremonies, temples and antique shops. Private dawn and sunset visits to Borobudur and other archeological monuments in the vicinity are the highlight of a stay.

Being a huge Aman fan, Amanjiwo was high on my list. My husband and I strayed for 4 nights last week and loved every minute of it! The staff are amazing, very friendly and personable. Definitely recommend the daily complimentary morning yoga by the pool, the instructor Augustin is lovely and will cater the class to your needs. We were the only 2 people in class 2 out of the 3 days. I also highly recommend dinner at Pak Bilal's house, picnic by the river and cycling through the near by villages.

We stayed here on our visit to Borobudur. The hotel is serene and majestic. From our back patio we could see the temple shrouded in the mist. the suite was large and elegant. But beware of the platform bed. If you get up in the middle of the night and forget getting back in you will have very bruised shins. The outdoor bathtub for two was divine. The food is very well prepared. Breakfast was my favorite meal. But if you have any knee issues, the stone stairs are steep and the banisters don't run the full length of the stairways. There is nothing in the immediate area of the hotel, so you will need to discuss with the concierge your options as well as how to get to the temple, which you want to get to before sunrise to beat the heat and the crowds.

High ceilings, garden terrace, secluded. Minibar not free, but jar of cookies and another of chips replaced daily. Bed set on wide platform making getting in and out of bed difficult for normal-height individuals. Toilet low and shallow, fine for midgets. Not within walking distance of Borobudur, but close. Lots of steps to get to restaurant. Water bottles in room of glass, but difficult to open, but great goose-down pillows.

Amanjiwo is the height of luxury (though you do pay for it). The room was lovely, large and luxurious, the grounds beautiful, and the food excellent, but the best part was the service. There was always an army of staff to help with most everything you could wish. For example, rather than predefined meal hours, you basically show up whenever you want at the restaurant and someone will be there to take care of you. (Great for early morning departures to the airport!) When you go to the pool, the attendant puts a fresh towel on your pool lounge chair and leaves an ice water for you. Your room attendant shows up reliably while they know you are out (no worrying about "have they made up my room yet?" when you get back from somewhere), with multiple changes of towels and robes per day whenever needed. They provide an assortment of excursions to help you enjoy the neighborhood, and free shuttle service to the nearby main tourist attraction, Borobudur. When our room's internet flaked out, someone came immediately to fix it, no waiting. The location is beautiful, looking out over forest and rice fields to Borobudur temple. About the only negative is that the price is very steep compared to almost-as-good hotel chains (such as Four Seasons), so it's not great value, but you do get a lot of personal attention for that extra cost.

Beautiful Aman property with truly unique activity offerings. Selagriyo grass tour, picnic by the the river, Borobudur at Sunset, spiritual healing sessions...this place is truly magical. The villas are well appointed: comfy bed, toiletries (including sunblock), sunhat, bag. Loved the turn down gifts! Had the pleasure of staying on two different occasions...the last time was a 9 day stretch. I never got tired of the food!!!! Love the Javanese menu. Hospitality was A+++ and would rival any Ritz or Four Seasons. Thank you for an unforgettable stay!
