Suimeikan is a very large hotel (by Japanese standards). The three onsen baths are excellent. The food was average/ OK, but nowhere near the standards of the best ryokan in Japan. I would recommend for families and large groups. But definitely not the best option for a romantic get-away.

Four stars for service and onsen facilities. Efficient train station pick up and check-in. Excellent English speaking nakai explained everything clearly and served tea and confection. Three onsens facilities located in different buildings with different atmosphere. Nice to try them all. Kira No Ryu restaurant offers great Japanese menu at reasonable price. The hotel was established some 80years ago and... More

We stayed here for a night on the way from Takayama to Osaka, booked a room at the lower budget end. This hotel is very big, not like the Ryokan we stayed previously, which more tends to be smaller and usually family run, has the all facilities you can expect for a large hotel, even have a swimming pool and... This was my first stay in Gero and it reminded so much of the areas around the world heritage town of Shirakawago. Beautifully surrounded by mountains. Arrival at the hotel was pretty impressive as we were greeted by a team of kimono dawning ladies. We were then escorted to our room and serve tea. The facilities themselves were just ok.... More

We stayed for one night on our way from Takayama to Nagoya. If you don't come for hot spring, Gero doesn't have much to offer. We had a walk in the streets looking for a restaurant @6pm: not only everything was closed in town but there was close to no light in the streets. The hotel is huge and very... More

My Gero onsen pass first spa, coz nearest to station. Their service are good, onsen pool are big, city view (not open air). Pool are ceramic type, nothing special. Toilet have city view, and can be view from city, the only thing I feel special.

Suimeikan is a huge hotel facility of 3 interconnected buildings located conveniently next to Gero station. The hotel runs a shuttle bus (not really necessary since it's 200 meters from the station) that is timed to pick up/return passengers arriving/departing using the Hida Limited Express trains. Check-in service was fast, efficient and similar to any other Japanese hospitality one has... More

This is a lovely location. The town is better than the photos suggest. We arrived and luckily my Japanese wife made quick order of checking in. This place is HUGE. We stayed in the traditional Japanese room with Tatami floors. If you have elderly parents as I do, they may have difficulty getting down and up. The Futon is lovely,... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Suimeikan is a ryokan that was established 80 years ago along the Hida River, where it currently remains sitting at the heart of Gero Onsen, one of the three most famous onsen locations in Japan. Guests can experience traditional Japanese culture inside the ryokan, which features a Japanese garden, a genuine Noh stage, as well as ceramic and art works. Guests can also enjoy hot springs with skin beautifying effects in three spots, including an open-air bath with an indoor bath, a large communal scenic bath, and a large communal indoor bath with a hinoki sauna. The communal scenic bath can be used 24 hours a day. We offer a variety of guest rooms in the Seiranso, Rinsenkaku, Hisenkaku, Sansuikaku manors, each built separately and in the style of a tea-ceremony arbor. Guests can also choose from rooms with private open-air baths, as well as between Japanese-style and Japanese/Western-style rooms. In addition to the Japanese kaiseki course served in the guest room, guests can also choose from a French course, Japanese cuisine course, and a Japanese/Western/Chinese fusion kaiseki course. The hotel also features plenty of facilities for plenty of fun, such as a swimming pool, gym, beauty salon, and a bar.
