Our family needed a break away from everything. Ma Johnson was perfect! Comfortable and clean rooms and bathrooms. They are considerate of the current social distancing and adjust room plans that allow for peace of mind. While we were there our German Shepard hurt his paws and they found a vet tech in the community that came and checked him out. My family and I will be going back.

This trip will definitely be one of my most memorable vacations. Both the town of McCarthy and the nearby Kennecott Mine National Historical Landmark are remarkable. Ma Johnson's is a nicely appointed hotel hearkening back to the early 1900's when the town was booming. Little has changed in the appearance and furnishings since then. The rooms are comfy and cozy. The owner, Neil, is very welcoming and the upgrade was very much appreciated. The food was fantastic and most of it was locally sourced. We definitely recommend this place! One more thing. There are still old rumors floating around about how bad the road is. They are nonsense. The last 60 miles are gravel but there are no worries about flat tires.

McCarthy is a great long weekend trip from Anchorage-you can truly unplug. We spent 3 nights at Ma Johnson’s hotel. The staff is accommodating, the rooms are clean and the water is hot. Great food at the bistro and saloon! We took the McCarthy road slow, but overall we didn’t think it was bad compared to the horror stories we heard. No flats for us!

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights in June and it was a wonderful stay. Due to the COVID pandemic, there were only a handful of tourists in town. Everyone was wonderful. The chefs employed at restaurant are fantastic and the food is incredible. This is our second trip to McCarthy and it’s always a great trip. Nice hike to the glacier and easy to walk on it with crampons. Highly recommend staying at Ma Johnson’s. Very remote and relaxing stay.

Sherri, who manages the property was very good to work with. If you call for reservations, she might have to call you back as she is all over the place up there!!! The place is very basic, but the history of it is fabulous! Common bath and restroom facilities, and the place was very clean and comfortable. I think the only place there is electricity in the building is in the lobby. None of us had any outlets in our rooms. There is wifi.

Room Tip: I'd stay away from the 2nd floor rooms at the front as they might be noisy.
