I stayed for six weeks and my experience was really good. The lodge is very well located, close to the village, small shops and straight on a beach. The rooms are very spacious, have AC, fridge, ensuite, a small table and comfy beds. There is also 24h security / reception but am not sure if that is really needed. My meals were good and included plenty of vegetables after asking for them. The staff plus management were very attentive and did a great job! I would surely stay again. From what I have heard, it is one of the best places to stay on the island.

Kiritimati has limited options in terms of accomodation. We chose this one as it was on the water, ocean side, and close to main centre, Ronton. We could walk to most places but all our needs were met in house. We swam out front which was nice but abit rocky at low tide. Food was plentiful if not abit monotonous when there for several weeks. Fish and rice. Vegitables and fresh fruit seemed to be in limited supply. Staff were always accomodating and even got hold of a pumpkin after we requested some vegies. No such thing as restaurants or cafe so its eat at hotel or nothing. Hot breakfast each day. (may need heating up as I think it is cooked when the tourists who are there for fly fishing get theirs at 6am). Plenty of beer but other options can only be bought at JMB supermarket back out near airport You can bring your own. Water in cooler is from tap so drink at your own risk. Room always clean and comfortable but basic. Aircon in all rooms but power can be unreliable on island. Wifi available for a fee, also unreliable on island.

As yachties visiting Kirimatiti we were very grateful for a land base where we were welcomed. Lee is a wonderful host who treated us as though we were guests staying at the 'Sunset Horizon Motel'. We ate there often to catch up with other people staying there and organize lifts to and from the airport and car hire around the island. On celebration nights there is a feast of lobster, pork, fish, rice and vegetables this is presented while watching a local dance performance. Cold beer is available and also washing as there are water shortages there.

If your coming to Kiritimati to surf this is your best option, 'right on the beach' located at London's there's at least two surfable breaks out the front (supposedly 6) . If there's swell; Note it has to be at least 10-12 foot plus on the North Shore of Hawaii to get 2 to 4 here. By staying at Sunset Horizon your right in town, next to shops and really close to the main wharf so you can easily organise a boat to visit the other surf breaks Sunset Horizon will pick you up at the airport and return you when you leave free of charge. Sunset is run by the local church and subsequently the kindness you receive staying there is very nice, the staff will try to be helpful, but English language is still a problem. The local custom dance night they give you before you fly out the next day is really good to experience the culture The motels' food is very average (nowhere near as good as remote Indo) but if your a traveller this shouldn't be a problem. If your expecting Maldivian or other resort delights definitely won't find it here. They have just built a large outdoor concrete floor tiled shade shelter and it's great to have a cold beer there whilst watching the sun set straight out over the horizon. The beds are comfortable but if your 6 foot or over they won't be large enough. The linen is clean and changed daily if you desire Showers are a plastic pipe bent over at the top connected to a roof tank and cold but it's warm enough there to not be a problem, it is pretty basic, someone could do with a tiling lesson from a proper trades person

We spent Christmas week (21st to 28th December 2016) at the Sunset Horizon Motel. This place is far better than the Captain Cook Hotel in our opinion. We visited the Captain Cook to see the site of the main camp for British forces posted there in the 50s and found the place to be run down and dirty. We were very glad to have booked at Sunset where there is at least a village to explore and shops to buy some basic items (but very little fresh food) and a rudimentary fun fair for Xmas complete with rickety but extremely fun ferris wheel! The staff were very attentive and helpful. We could not fault them for anything but be aware that they will charge you for EVERYTHING you use. We "borrowed" an electric frying pan to enable us to cook our own vegan food, since the fare at the hotel was mostly fish and a little meat, only to find that at the end of the week they had charged a day to rent the pan! Also, we asked very clearly via email before leaving if there would be any extra costs on top of accommodation and were told that there would be none however meals are charged separately and since there is no where else to eat you have to eat there so you will need to budget around -40 per day per person for meals on top of room rate. Car hire is a private transaction between you and a local car owner. There are no official rental companies. We borrowed the hotel manager's car in the end since he couldn't source another car. They will also arrange boat hire for a day so that you can explore the more remote spots that are not accessible by road. The snorkelling is amazing around the reefs. We saw many tropical fish and even some black tipped reef sharks! Overall we loved the place, just be wary of their additional charges and make sure you take enough Australian dollars in cash since the one ATM at the ANZ Bank is not reliable. We had no internet connection the entire time we were there so the ATM network was down too. No one will accept credit cards so if you don't have enough cash you'll be in trouble paying for anything.
