We spent a weekend at the Chateau Vartely between the 27 and 29 of May 2017, and this is definitely not even a 3 star hotel, not in terms of rooms and amenities but services. We arrived on a Saturday evening after an 8 hours drive from home. I was with my husband, my mother and our 3 years old girl. The first impression: front desk. Nice and cozy, but with an employee who was also attending the gift shop, a few hundred meters away from the front desk. For a five star hotel this lack of staff is unacceptable, and we noticed later this was not the only case. After the check in, the employee told us that our friends we were about to meet there paid a bottle of wine for us to have it upon arrival. A very nice gesture, but the stuff placed in our hands at the front desk a bottle of warm (almost boiled )white wine. As far as I know at a decent hotel the bottle of wine is supposed to be in your room, at a decent temperature with a bottle opener and some glasses aside. And was not a free amenity, somebody paid for it, but the hotel took care not to be nice surprise. Second impression: the room. We stayed in a nice apartment, on the first floor, with a nice view over the valley. The room was big, two bathrooms with free amenities and a huge balcony. But it was pretty cold outside especially for our daughter and they told us that the heaters were turned off, so if we want to be warmer inside just to turn on the air conditioner. We did so, but it was not the same thing. Also for a five star resort the beds were awful, poor mattresses and pillows and the beds were really noisy. I am not a picky traveler, but when you advertise your location as luxury, I do expect luxury. Third impression: the restaurant. As I was saying we were after an 8 hours drive with a 3 years old child, and we were hungry, and eager to have a hot meal. As the front desk employee informed us when he came to our room (he came to put me sign a child disclaimer: that I will take care of my child on the property, and any injuries are about to be my fault for not taking good care of her, because the property is on a hill, with a lot of stones, and bumpy alleys...funny, the first paper of its kind I ever signed), ok, so the guy told us that we are not going to be able to eat in the restaurant, because they have two baby shower parties, both on the first and second floor. But if we want we can order room service. That will do it, we thought, and we asked for a menu. But nooo, nothing is simple at this five star hotel. He told my husband to go to the restaurant for a menu. An upper hill trip and half hour later my husband came back, telling us the is not going to be possible to eat there, because they told him in the restaurant that nobody in the kitchen is available to make us dinner, and if we want to eat in our room we have to settle for some cold snacks. Maybe we could’ve done that, but there was a child with us, who wanted and needed a soup or anything else warm. So we had to leave the property, to find a restaurant, because this 5* resort was not able to fulfill a simple request: dinner. The second day we attended the wedding we were supposed to, but even at the dinner party, this „winery” served warm white wine....unacceptable. Also the staff from the housekeepers to servers were pretty rude, letting you know they are making you a favor by serving, or attending you. So again, if you are looking for an overpriced countryside retreat Chateau Vartely is the place for you, but if have a minimum travelling experience, to not fall for their marketing tricks.…
