We decided to visit for the weekend for a short getaway. Our "wonderful" trip started with not being able to get to the place. The road to the resort was being repaired and there was no detour marked anywhere, so we called to find out how to get there. At first no one answered the phone, I tried a bunch of alternative numbers and eventually someone grumpy answered telling us "how should I know how to get to us". That was a first sign there was something dodgy about this so-called resort. We ended up driving through the corn field to get there, thanks goodness for our old 4x4. They had a sauna but it was closed so not much to do on the territory. In the evening during our dinner they said that the kitchen was experiencing technical difficulties and the restaurant would be closed the next day so we would not get hot breakfast that was nicely described in their booklet and which we really looked forward to. There was something weird about it since we got dinner alright amid all the "technical difficulties" so I suspected they did not want to make breakfast for just 3 couples that were staying there overnight. In the morning we went looking for the breakfast since no one came to our room and spotted the admin walking around with plastic bags. We got some old sandwich, a cucumber, a green plum and a teabag. They made zero effort to organize an edible breakfast. I asked around and apparently they do that all the time to save money and locals are just ok with that.

Excellent hotel. Large and clean rooms. Location is excellent to discover Moldova. Excellent restaurant with excellent wines. Service is good but think about pre-ordering the food if they have a large group in.

A true 5* hotel in services, comfort, people and everything. I came here for a wine trip, = had a great time at the hotel, at dinner and at the wine tasting. I knew most of their wines since I am a wine lover but I requested for a special food & wine pairing dinner at it was great. Totally recommend it and I am definitely coming back! I just love this place!

Chateau Vartely is an industrial-scale winery, with a busy banqueting facility attached, which does a roaring trade in weddings at the weekends. The 12-room accommodation side of the business is very much the poor relation. Guests staying in these rooms have to present themselves in person at the restaurant to make a booking - it can't be done by phone or by the management of the accommodation side of the operation. They also have to pay for each meal as they take it. Thus far, none of this is any great hardship. But, if you stay here at the weekend, when they're busy with weddings, you've got a real problem. On Saturday night, a restricted menu was offered because the kitchen was so busy with the wedding catering. In terms of main courses, choice was limited to chicken stew or pork stew. Both portions were very small and low on flavour. To compensate for these defects, they were accompanied by sour cream, grated cheese, a little scrambled egg and a large yellow object which could have been corn bread. After eating this indifferent meal, we retreated to our room, where we had to put up with the wedding reception’s music until 04:00. Having slept poorly the night before, I tried for a siesta on Sunday, but was constantly disturbed by bridal parties who seemed to think our 'private' balcony provided a nice location for a photo. At least we weren't troubled by housekeeping, because rooms don't seem to be serviced at weekends. We were faced with the same limited menu on Sunday, but we gave the stews a miss! We opted for soup, a plate of grilled vegetables and some cheese. It was pleasant enough, but not exactly a 5-star hotel restaurant meal! The hotel has some pluses. The rooms are spacious and have a lot of character - the idea is that the three 'villas' mimic the architectural styles of south, central and north Moldova. Although it is not set amongst vineyards, the hotel has a pleasant semi-rural location with good views to the west. When it's not doing weddings, it's a peaceful place with attentive service. And the wine-tasting is well worth doing. I can imagine that a weekday visit might have merited a score of 4. I'm disappointed that we stayed over a weekend, and hope others will avoid making that mistake.

We very much enjoyed our stay in the spacious VIP apartment with its own fire place. The only thing I would recommend is an upgrade (replacement) of the rather uncomfortable mattresses. The Restaurant serves great food and of course excellent wines! There is lots of space for the kids to stroll around and staff is very friendly AND (!) yes, they do speak English. Our tour guide for example was speaking fluent in English.

We spent a weekend at the Chateau Vartely between the 27 and 29 of May 2017, and this is definitely not even a 3 star hotel, not in terms of rooms and amenities but services. We arrived on a Saturday evening after an 8 hours drive from home. I was with my husband, my mother and our 3 years old girl. The first impression: front desk. Nice and cozy, but with an employee who was also attending the gift shop, a few hundred meters away from the front desk. For a five star hotel this lack of staff is unacceptable, and we noticed later this was not the only case. After the check in, the employee told us that our friends we were about to meet there paid a bottle of wine for us to have it upon arrival. A very nice gesture, but the stuff placed in our hands at the front desk a bottle of warm (almost boiled )white wine. As far as I know at a decent hotel the bottle of wine is supposed to be in your room, at a decent temperature with a bottle opener and some glasses aside. And was not a free amenity, somebody paid for it, but the hotel took care not to be nice surprise. Second impression: the room. We stayed in a nice apartment, on the first floor, with a nice view over the valley. The room was big, two bathrooms with free amenities and a huge balcony. But it was pretty cold outside especially for our daughter and they told us that the heaters were turned off, so if we want to be warmer inside just to turn on the air conditioner. We did so, but it was not the same thing. Also for a five star resort the beds were awful, poor mattresses and pillows and the beds were really noisy. I am not a picky traveler, but when you advertise your location as luxury, I do expect luxury. Third impression: the restaurant. As I was saying we were after an 8 hours drive with a 3 years old child, and we were hungry, and eager to have a hot meal. As the front desk employee informed us when he came to our room (he came to put me sign a child disclaimer: that I will take care of my child on the property, and any injuries are about to be my fault for not taking good care of her, because the property is on a hill, with a lot of stones, and bumpy alleys...funny, the first paper of its kind I ever signed), ok, so the guy told us that we are not going to be able to eat in the restaurant, because they have two baby shower parties, both on the first and second floor. But if we want we can order room service. That will do it, we thought, and we asked for a menu. But nooo, nothing is simple at this five star hotel. He told my husband to go to the restaurant for a menu. An upper hill trip and half hour later my husband came back, telling us the is not going to be possible to eat there, because they told him in the restaurant that nobody in the kitchen is available to make us dinner, and if we want to eat in our room we have to settle for some cold snacks. Maybe we could’ve done that, but there was a child with us, who wanted and needed a soup or anything else warm. So we had to leave the property, to find a restaurant, because this 5* resort was not able to fulfill a simple request: dinner. The second day we attended the wedding we were supposed to, but even at the dinner party, this „winery” served warm white wine....unacceptable. Also the staff from the housekeepers to servers were pretty rude, letting you know they are making you a favor by serving, or attending you. So again, if you are looking for an overpriced countryside retreat Chateau Vartely is the place for you, but if have a minimum travelling experience, to not fall for their marketing tricks.

I visited this place for a night...very nice restaurant..very nice rooms (I had a VIP appartment..around 100 euros/night including breakfast)...the rooms are very elegant and very stilish...the restaurant looks very nice...I tried some traditional pies and also some smoked pork cold cuts..very good...the main building has under the restaurant some halls for tasting the wine...which is very good..in my opinion the best in Moldavia, especially the red wine Tarabostes and also the sparkling wine. Many thanks to Ludmila our guest...well qualified for this wine tour job. Behind the main building is the factory...impressive and extremely modern. Also there are a unit house with sauna and billiard. It is a good destination for weekend!

Basically noone speaks english in the restaurant, although its a 5 star place. we tried to order two glasses of wine in our poor russian and got 2 bottles in the end. It was not possibe to cancel (what we didnt order), so we had to buy them! The food was good, but after that incident (and thinking of the bill) I couldnt really enjoy it.

I had to attend to a wedding at CV and don't feel sorry for accepting the invitation. The location is wonderful, on hills, with all the green grass and the lovely-wonderful smelling flowers around. The rooms look better in real life than in photos. The food at the wedding was amazing. Breakfast was not the best, but it was ok. The wines are amazing. Individo and Taraboste are my recommendations :) I really enjoyed the time spent here and I would definitely go back. Maybe for a romantic weekend ;)
