I was a tourist in South Sudan and stayed at the Royal Palace Hotel. I popped in to Afex for a leisurely lunch. The setting of the Camp is beautiful— tall mango trees provide shade to the accommodation and restaurant and bar. The white Nile (complete with shipwreck) is soothing to watch while you wait. They even have a shisha bar! The staff are very friendly and were wearing Santa huts. The menu provides something for everyone but the taste is average, plus a bit more expensive compared to the Royal Palace. You can’t beat this place for quiet serenity. Only issue is that non residents aren’t given WIFI access.
We stayed in the containers in the camp and they were very comfortable. The bed had a mosquito net, the room had a TV, a private shower/toilet, with uninterrupted water and electricity. The place was very clean, the staff very nice. The restaurant at the camp offered breath taking views of the Nile and the food was pretty great (for Juba standards) as well.
Excellent rooms including a kitchenette if you don't want to eat at the restaurant. Not a fancy hotel but very comfortable with everything you need, except perhaps somewhere to print paperwork. Breakfast is fine with the basics, food and drinks are excellent and the location on the river is second to none for relaxation. The treadmills in the gym are wonky but that's about the only complaint. Mark the manager does a good job to keep everything running smoothly in a difficult environment.
It's tranquil, cool and calming to sit along the Nile under the mango trees as you're working or dining. This is my 4th visit to AFEX River Camp and the service is always attentive and this time the food was really good. One of the best pizzas I can recall - anywhere. Rooms are pretty basic but clean and functional.
With a great view of the Nile there is no better place to unwind and have a drink or meal with friends. There is a good menu and specials each day the portions are large so be ready to take home tomorrow’s lunch !! Staff are unobtrusive and it must be one of the prettiest places to have an after work drink. The seating is mainly under the trees. It can get really busy, go early or late.
