I booked two rooms and got lost and was fairly late for check in. The proprietor was very nice about it and by the next morning both of my kids decided he might very well be the most entertaining fellow in all of Scotland. The rooms were nice but the real highlight was the breakfast and wonderful stories provided. This...

Thank you for your kindness. Of course the cure for - post dramatic stress disorder ( for adults) - is a wee visit to a sympathetic psychiatrist. The Kids ?......send them to drama school ......they obviously get it and are set to be stars. Haste ye back. Ewan , Irene and the doggies

Even though the place is undergoing cosmetic improvements, for which the owner has saved for many years, I would highly recommend staying there. It is conveniently set on the bus route. The place is warm and cozy. The nearby restaurants are fabulous. And the local pubs are very friendly. We won't soon forget the hospitality we found there.

Thank you for your very kind and understanding comment . The masonry repair and repointing work on the front of the house is all complete now and it is great to see what an expert experienced stonemason can achieve. As he said -" it really looks bonny now" . We have always believed that good B&B here is simple and...

I had a wonderful time, Dalkeith is a lovely place to stay while in Edinburgh. Mr & Mrs Mc Rae are really great hosts. I travelled all the way from France and I testify that this place is a good one. Thank you to them

A beautiful old house and good welcome at Rathan House. The decor is somewhat eclectic and there was a bit of a smell of smoke in the hall, but overall it was a really pleasant stay. Breakfast in particular was great with some Scottish classics on the menu.

Hi Glad you enjoyed your stay and our " classics" scotch grub. "Smoke in hall " - well there are lots of very big gardens around here and bonfires - especially at Guy Fawkes bonfire night - are obviously to be expected early November ( Lots of damp leaves to be burned....sorry !) Haste ye back Ewan & Irene

Well what can I say..myself and my "Gamekeeper" husband had a thoroughly enjoyable stay at Rathan House, Dalkeith for this weekend. Very central for local shops and buses are every few minutes. We stayed for breakfast..which we are glad we did, non of that grease and fried eggs like the traditional guest houses offer, but a pure choice of Scottish...

Welcoming, great stories, facilities were good. The breakfast was an important part of the day. It was varied and there was attention to the conversation with the other guests in a relaxing atmosphere. We have enjoyed here.

We stayed for a weekend at the Rathan House and it was absolutely lovely. The big garden was perfect to entertain our dog who was travelling with us. The room was big and bright, but the best thing was the breakfast that was prepared by the host himself and was so fresh and yummy that I actually ate more than...

Based on the information of other visitors, I booked a 4 days stay in the Rathan House as a base to discover Edinburgh (taking bus line #3, bus stop close to the guesthouse, even in the nigh, no problem, with line N3, WIFI within the bus). The Scottish breakfast was amazing, in particular if you like fish ! And the...

We enjoyed our stopover. The Landlord was very helpful and attentive. The Highland breakfast is the stuff of legend. The experience should be embraced and enjoyed, a welcome change from the stereotypical breakfast offerings from most hotel chains.

Thank you for your kind comments. As must be obvious we take a slight risk with a non buffet bespoke house party "collegiate" high fruit and fish and egg emphasis. It is never going to be as quick as a buffet. So long as a guest enters into the 1920's house party spirit, it can be fun and entertaining. It...
