Ourselves and our adult children and their partners booked four nights here to follow our safari. So glad we did. We all opted for beach Bandas and I would strongly advise booking these. They look like they have been recently refurbished and as well as being huge rooms, they have a large terrace. All of them have uninterrupted views of the beautiful beach, they are furnished with a day bed in the shade, 2 sunloungers and even a sofa. The areas around the pools are lovely, the beach is beautiful, snorkelling is best at around 8am, we saw puffer fish, clown fish and even a lion fish. Arriving here by boat is an experience in itself. The meals are now all a la carte, which to be honest we prefer. The quality is fabulous, especially the Swahili curry for breakfast and the fish in the evenings. Cocktails and wine are reasonably priced. The staff are faultless, overseen by Andreas who is the most hands on and friendly manager I have ever experienced. Our flight was delayed by 24 hours, so we spent an extra day here and Hassan and his colleagues helped us change flights etc. We came at the end of June (left on the 30th) the weather was a mixture of sunshine and cloud, blisteringly hot when the sun was out, but on our final day it did rain for about an hour, so check on when its best to visit. We would definitely come back.

We had a great 3 night stay on Chale Island in March 2022. All staff were friendly and professional. None of the hassle of the big resorts or tourist towns. We stayed in a beach banda, which was large and spacious, with a lot of character. The beach is very white sand, though swimming was limited at low tide. Very reasonably priced drinks and activities, including a great day spa. Would definitely recommend, especially for those looking for a safe and private island get away! The hotel also organised transfers to Mombasa airport for us, which worked well.

Had a wonderful stay in a beach Banda. These all have a walkway straight to the Devine beach. Rooms are a good size. Total getaway as you go there to relax, rooms have no power in the day and no TV which is great in this day and age. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Special mention to Kingee and Hassan. Manager Andreas is always present and quickly corrected what few issues we had with the room.. Had a lovely forest walk with Paul who gave us a lot of information on the island and how the hotel helps it. Well worth checking the tides and walking around the island. Mangroves are muddy but manageable and look out for the many pools with fish and star fish near the honeymoon Banda. Food is buffet style very varied and well made.

The island is amazing! We were a bit apprehensive when we arrived at the end of Diani Beach Road and there was no official building or person to welcome us (it looks like they are building one) but eventually we found someone who had our names and told us to wait 10 minutes for the tractor. Depending in the tide you go across by tractor or boat which is a fun adventure. There are 60+ rooms and we have found 3 pools. Our favourite one was overlooking the sea with Galana bar. These are all kept nice and clean and with friendly staff to help with towels and drinks. The food: We were on full board which meant we ate at the buffet restaurant everyday. There is also an a la carte restaurant but we rarely saw anyone there. The buffet food is mostly good. The chefs are on hand to offer dietary advice and had made gluten free and eggless cakes etc. For breakfast there are egg and waffle stations as well as cereals and pastries and fruits. Lunch and dinner have a soup and a pasta station which are very good. They also have a grill station which serves either “catch of the day” which was always snapper when we were there or some meat. Anything in a sauce was usually delicious and we particularly enjoyed the local Kenyan food options! Some of the precooked seafood (normally calamari) was often a bit rubbery and not sure it does well in a buffet situation. It was sad that there was not any prawns or crab or shellfish while we were there. Other cons: the juices were warm and not particularly nice, the music is an annoying repetitive jingle and signing for drinks was never a particularly smooth process. Our room: 62 Over Water Suite. As it was our honeymoon we opted for the overwater suite. Pros: The room is very large with a bedroom, sitting room and bathroom with a balcony with a couch, sun beds and table with stairs going down to the water (when it’s high tide). Most of the furniture is nice and beachy. It has power all day unlike the more basic rooms that don’t and a minibar and water cooler and basic tea/coffee making facilities. It is very private as there are only 2 suites and they are far away from the other rooms. You can watch the birds and baboons and monkeys from the terrace which is lovely. You get what feels like a very private sunset every night as it is the only west facing rooms. Cons: The location means it’s a long walk to the pools or restaurant past often quite grumpy guards and construction workers while we were there. Being on the side where the tractor and boat come in you hear these a lot and it is not completely private feeling as you can see them from the balcony. The room has AC but because of the open makuti roof it struggles to properly cool down the bedroom so we had to ask for an extra fan. The bathroom and light switches feel very old and rusty and not very luxurious at all. The price - at the moment I don’t think it’s worth the money as if you’re charging $380/person/night(full board) it should feel properly luxurious but with a new bathroom, a few more amenities (like two dressing gowns and nicer towels and better tea/coffee making with milk) and less construction work it might be! Activities: I went on two dives with Evans (Diving The Crab) and they were excellent! Ngumbao was our very nice captain and kept my husband company while the rest of us went diving. Evans was very relaxed and confidence-inspiring and ran both dives extremely well and was so knowledgable and passionate about the ocean! Wonderful experience! I am hoping to bring my husband back so Evans can get him to love diving too!!! We also had 2 massages and they were both excellent. The masseurs are very skilled. We also got to use a kayak and boogie boards free of charge which was lovely. Finally the resort treated us to some gifts because of it being our honeymoon which were really lovely. We got a free 30 minute couples massage and a bottle of wine and fruit on arrival and a private dinner table on the beach and our choice of food. That dinner was lovely and John the waiter looked after us very well!!! Overall the staff are very friendly and helpful although there’s a few (like the welcomer at Diani beach and the guards and construction workers) that were not and made you feel a bit uncomfortable. I hope in this new post lock down season they are able to flourish and improve some of these smaller things but overall our 4 days were very special and we would come back (but probably stay in a beach banda instead!!)

We really enjoyed our stay at The Sands at Chale Island. Getting to the resort is unique with - depending on the tide - either a boat or with a tractor. Be prepared to spend your entire stay in the resort which makes up the entire island. Staff at reception, bar and restaurant is very friendly and helpful. We stayed in a Beach Banda (No. 29) which had absolutely gorgeous views over the sea and beach, although no direct beach access. The Banda was furnished in a sort of slightly „shabby chic style“ in local furniture with a nice bed and very nice outdoor area. There was no electricity between 10 am and 5 pm (which was no problem at all since you‘re not in your room anyway), having hot water requires about 10 minutes of foresight (again no problem) and the water in the shower and wash basin is slightly salty (which will wreck your hair style, Ladies, but again we didn’t have a problem with that). There is no TV, so the spotty wi-fi especially in the evenings was a definite minus. The food (we went to the breakfast and dinner buffet at the main restaurant) was very good, with the special highlight of nightly fresh fish and/or sea food prepared on demand. Breakfast had omelette station and very tasty croissants - and the best coffee I have yet had in a buffet style breakfast in Kenya. I was a bit disappointed that the house white wine was Chardonnay, but I guess I am in the minority not particularly liking Chardonnay. Beach and pool area was very nice and well kept with very friendly and helpful staff. I admit to being slightly obsessed with the traditional kanga cloth sun umbrellas at the beach - so pretty! We did not use the spa facilities just the showers when we left, and that was functional but not overwhelmingly nice. We wanted to take a shower before changing to go to the airport and after checking out of our Banda, and having to trek across the island in over 30 degrees and high humidity sort of defeated the purpose, but that’s a matter of organizing and money for late checkout. Staying at The Sands at Chale Island is a very nice tranquil beach get away. We had a very nice time and will be back.

Off reading adventure to get there but overall worth it. You are isolated whilst in resort. Bit of a faff to get off the island. 2 nights was great don't think we could have managed more. Being critical the reception area is poor and does not reflect the main area of the resort having said that it does look as though they are making improvements. Signposting off the road is non existent. The staff are relaxed and friendly. The resort is fabulous. We booked a penthouse (lots of stairs beware !). It is the best "room" we have ever been in. It comprises a main floor with lounge area, bedroom and bathroom. Then an open mezzanine floor with comfy lounging about seating, amazing views & private sun lounge balcony area. The one thing missing is a form of communication with reception. However, there is a water cooler, coffee maker and ability to make tea and instant coffee. The outdoor areas are well furnished with comfortable lounge seating and eating area.

We visited here for 5 nights as a part of our covid delayed honeymoon and was impressed from start to finish. We checked in at around 10pm after a long day of travelling following safari and was ready to relax! The restaurant was shut, however they had kept a meal for us and allowed us to eat before checking into the room. On arrival to the room they had put a ‘Just Married’ sign outside which we felt was a nice touch. We stayed in a Banda which was very large for two people and nicely decorated with what I would class as antique style furniture. There was an outdoor area with two sun loungers, an outdoor bed and another seating area. We often had a drink and spent an hour or two here before the evening meal. The rooms had air con which made it more comfortable. The electricity is off from 10am to 5pm - however this didn’t affect us as we were always outdoors between these times. There is Wi-Fi at all times all over the resort. The beach is lovely, and when the tide comes in is good to have a swim in. We also did two of the excursions that were on offer from the hotel - the snorkelling around the coral reef and the boat trip around the mangroves. They were both led by Mr Paul and the Captain, and we enjoyed both. I was surprised that more people were not doing them as they are very reasonably priced in my opinion. The snorkelling is a must! Mr Paul was very knowledgeable. We also had a massage at the spa which was just what the doctor ordered after hours sat in a truck on safari! The pool areas are both nice, but we spent more time around the main pool. The waiter Tony was superb both around the pool and at the restaurant. Around the main pool there was also an extremely friendly attendant who gave out the towels. His laugh was infectious! The food at the buffet is always good. I think if we were staying much more than 5 days it would be a little repetitive but for our stay it was very good. We were half board, but the drinks were fairly reasonably priced. There is an a la carte menu that has a very wide variety on it. There was little entertainment, but one night there was an acrobat show which was amazing. On the last night, the hotel arranged an a la carte meal on the beach for us. Which was a wonderful way to round off a great stay. The waiter again was great, as well as the whole of the staff during our stay. We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it. If there were any improvements to be made, I would suggest solar power panels on the island so that the electric could be on all day and then there could be fridges in the rooms and be able to have the air con on during the day. Only a tiny point - which didn’t affect our holiday in any way.

We stayed at this beautifully run and relaxing island for 18 nights. The resort was spotless, the staff were friendly and polite from the gardeners up to the management.. this is a gem of a place and we were fortunate to be staying in beach Banda no 20 which had it’s own private steps down onto the beautiful pristine beach that looked over the Indian Ocean. The buffet styled food was both hot and cold and was always delicious with the staff always attentive. There is a PADI dive centre on the island that we took full advantage of. It is very well run by dive instructor Evans and managed to squeeze in 14 dives on some of Kenya’s finest reefs. I would highly recommend this resort. Thank you all at Chale island for making our stay so enjoyable and relaxing..

We stayed for two nights on full board at the Sands Chale Island December2021.It was a breathtaking experience. The location is excellent. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The rooms are clean and spacious. The resort has a fitness centre and 3 lovely pools of which one is of salty water. The beach is enjoyable during high tides. Covid protocols are well observed.Buffet is excellent with lots of variety. The New year celebration was a blast at the beach with great menu and music that got everyone on their feet all night. The only issue is rationing of power during the day as they are not connected to the national grid. All in all it was a stay we will never forget! We will definitely return and recommend our friends not to miss out.
