We enjoyed our stay with Andrew and Rupert. Their house is a beautiful shade of pink, and has a lovely landscaped garden to the back. Castle ramparts sit above, floodlit at night. Our room was spacious and well maintained - decoration as pictured online, The firm bed had good linen and there was a large bathroom. There is also an attractive lounge for guests downstairs, as well as access to the garden. We had a lovely evening meal, specially prepared by Rupert, and the breakfasts were great for us - fruit, granola, yoghurt, toast, juice and tea/coffee. Castro Marim itself is an ordinary, quiet town and the marshy country around it is not particularly attractive. There are a few cafes and restaurants, but it's not a destination itself IMO. However, it's a short drive to beaches, Ayamonte, Vila Real (with its gentrified waterfront) and Tavira, or to the scenic roads that wind along the river border. We were woken up by pungent smoke (like a cigar) coming in the window one night, so bad we had to close it (a shame because the night was warm). There is a retirement home across the road, and I saw a staff member smoking in the street the following day - so I wondered a staff member had been smoking the night before. If you have a car, there is parking in an empty lot at the end of the street. If you're using public transport, Vila Real is the nearby hub and you can get a taxi from there. But it's very flat, so you can use bikes to get around the local area. Casa Rosada makes a charming base for a stay in the eastern Algarve.

We had a fabulous stay here in a lovely traditional Portuguese town. The house is designed to perfection. Our room was like a large New York townhouse. Our bed was beyond comfortable - I found it hard to leave! Fluffy towels, beautiful linen and then the food...WOW! Such a beautiful ( Instagramable if you are in to that) breakfast - fresh, colourful, jam made from the garden, FRESH orange juice. You have a chef who will literally cook you the best meal you will ever have for supper ! We had fresh tuna, beetroot gazpacho , gluten free starter for me too! I could go on...you need a car. We love travelling around so we were happy to have this as our base and explore the surroundings. We went to Spain for dinner too ( it’s 15 mins away). The water is warmer to swim in here rather than the East Algarve we had just been to. We arrived on the last day of the Medieval Festival which was an experience in itself! A fabulous stay ✨

Our second visit to Casa Rosada was another resounding success.. hard to top the last visit but everything was as good as we remembered and as before I came home inspired to cook and bake thanks to Rupert’s encyclopaedic knowledge of all things food and drink..and his truly delicious cooking..we visited several local restaurants and tried a new one in Ayamonte which was amazing.. all thanks to Andrew and Rupert and their advice on where to go and when .. this is a truly excellent place to base yourself and drive out along the Algarve every day. ⭐️

Ok. Here we go. My review of the delightful Casa Rosada... Start your day with home-made yogurt, granola, plums, greengages, peaches, figs, apricots, cherries plus delicious toast with homemade jams, preserves and marmalades. Accompanied by superb coffee, freshly squeezed orange juice and whatever. Then off to the beach, perhaps. (Scorchio...) When you get back, the food you'll be served in the exquisite garden in the evening is the best I've eaten in Portugal. Or Spain. Or Italy. Or Thailand. Or Japan. Or Mexico. In fact, better, tastier, more intriguing food than pretty much anything else I've ever eaten...(apart from in that French/Japanese Michelin restaurant in Bourgogne that I will never, ever tell anyone else about...) Then there are the airy, beautifully appointed bedrooms. Crisp linen. Tasteful decor. Extraordinarily comfortable beds. And the bathrooms fit for kings, queens - or whatever. Drench yourself in style, dry yourself in luxury. But what about Casa Rosada's immediate location? Castro Marim is a frontier town between the Algarve and Andalusia, and It has a huge mediaeval castle, surrounded by streets with a charming 18th and 19th century sleepy Portuguese ambience. Best of all for the sybaritic holiday-making nature-loving Anglo, there are salt pans, rivers, marshes and other unspoilt natural features all around this well connected little town, as well as roads that lead in a delightfully arcane way to the most brilliant beaches in Europe. Rupert and Andrew, your charming and sophisticated hosts, will guide you to the very best: Cacelha Velho, Fabrica, Praia Verde, Cabescu. All a few short miles away. With cranes dipping into verdant lagoons to scoop up the flashing, darting fish. Sandy beaches that stretch into all possible horizons. Restaurants, bars and coffee houses to rival the South of France. Particularly in the nearest town, the lively hotspot of Tavira. As you might intuit, I love staying at Casa Rosada. So does my partner in crime. It's not quite paradise, because there's the odd mosquito or two, as well as the occasional bit of 'saudade' (look it up...) But it's damn close to it, and it won't cost you the earth. Far from it.
