From the August 25th until August 27th, 2017, my brother, my mother and I stayed at Casarao dos Reis. The accommodation is located in a rural setting, providing nice views over the hills and farm fields. The room was slightly outdated but had charm to it. The bathroom was clean, but in order to shower we had to hold the shower in one hand and soap in the other. The room was hot due to there not being AC, but this matter was quickly solved by the owners providing a fan. The breakfast is decent, but nothing special. We expected some fresh eggs, as the accommodation is basically a farm with plenty of chickens walking around, but none were served. Further, some of the bread seemed to be old and the croissants are factory made (at a farm?!). Overall the accommodation is great value for your money. However, some of the staff members are particularly rude. The maid serving breakfast in the morning was extremely hesitant to serve us any extra bread or milk, even though we kindly asked for it. As it seems, she must dislike western tourists (who don't speak Portuguese or Spanish), as she basically ignored us but treated Spanish tourists with a smile from cheek to cheek. Rude!…
This is a rural area and the accommodations are appropriate. The rooms are large, comfortable, and they include very nice ensuite baths. The owner is a very lovely lady but she is assisted by her brusque and dismissive daughter. We asked about someplace to eat and she directed us to a town 17 miles away. Instead, when we took a walk through this village, we asked about dining and were directed to a very nice restaurant just yards away. When we mentioned this to the daughter when we returned, we were answered with a harrumph. The breakfast was OK as long as you don’t mind the daughter hovering and anxious for you to finish. This would have been a much better visit if the daughter was simply not there. But because she was, our visit was a disappointment. This is a lovely area and the townspeople are delightful. If we could be assured that the owner, and not her daughter, would be around, we would certainly return.…
When most of us think of Portugal, we envisage the Algarve or the Lisbon coast perhaps. Beautiful places in their own right. I'd encourage travellers to experience the north of Portugal - Porto certainly but look inland also and,as in our case, reach across to the lovely historical city of Braganca (z for c in English). We wanted to enjoy the real rural Portugal without touristic blandishments. And our stay at Casarao dos Reis in the village of Caravela (some 10km from Braganca) certainly fulfilled, indeed exceeded our aspirations. The hotel itself (family-owned) is wonderfully designed, very clean and above all, extremely welcoming. 100% recommended.
