My family reserved 3 out of the 4 available rooms. The location was beautiful, just steps out to the beach and about a 40 minute walk to playa La Flor which is where the turtles come to lay their eggs. The staff was great, helpful and very accommodating, the pool was clean and the place had character. Now why am I not that content about my stay? -my room was the one with the bunks because I traveled with teenagers. That room has a SHARED OUTSIDE bathroom, which was inconvenient for a family of 4. -I did my first part of my reservation over 3 weeks in advance, I feel like that gave enough time to do something about that musty smell of unused closed rooms, the pillows reeked of old sweat. -The food is was really meh, felt like they didn’t have enough and they had to portion our servings. -I wouldn’t had mind mosquito nets on the beds. Mosquitos were vicious! -no activities and transportation were offered, we found our own transport to and from town which is at least 30 minutes drive. I might sound picky myself when you read this but I reserved this place thanks to great reviews. So as honest as I could be, I hope this review helps you make an informed decision if you do reserve this place you enjoy the beautiful, peaceful location in San Juan del Sur.

I would give a higher rating if I could. This hotel is outstanding! I was the only guest and stayed in the room with ocean view. Oh my God... It was just amazing! The room itself is super nice, comfy big bed, huge bathroom, big closet with safe, desk and even some fresh flowers in the room, own terrace with sofa and hammock, stunning view. The beach is really clean and waves aren't too high, so you can go and enjoy swimming. If you feel more like having a good time in the pool: it looked very good, too. (I'm just more the ocean person, that's why I didn't use it.) Tracy manages the hotel and is a real super host. :-) She is always making sure you're fine. She took me to La Flor and offered to pick me up at any time I wanted - even in the middle of the night. Staff is also really nice, helpful, friendly and always smiling. I felt super welcome and like at home. Breakfast was fantastic: gallo pinto, eggs, really good bread, jam, fruits, fresh juice, coffee. ...and a lot! Lunch/ dinner would also be available. Thank you very much for this wonderful experience! I loved it and if I come back to Nicaragua I'll definitely be back at La Veranera. :-) Some organizational things: There is a restaurant next door and a small tienda is also around the corner. There is a bus from/ to San Juan 3 times a day. If you come by car, a sedan car will do it in dry season. But for rain season, you might even struggle with a 4x4. (On the way back we had to cross a river and only the bus dared to go.) If you wonder whether you could cross the border to Costa Rica at Frontera de Conventillos or at least use that road next to the boarder to/from Sapoá: I was told by several people it's not possible.

This is an amazing destination. The house is very cozy and comfortable. Tracy is amazing and she always is trying to keep you comfortable. You can choose to swim in the pool or go to the beach. It is amazing to get up in the morning and heard the beach sounds and look the beach while you take your breakfast. I highly recommend this beautiful place!!

La Veranera is a quaint hotel with a rustic feel. The rooms are nice and the hotel is right on the beach with a fresh water pool. The manager Tracy made us feel welcome and Sophia cooked up a delicious dinner. Highly recommended

This is a wonderful guesthouse, set right on the beach. We’ve been here for 5 nights and I haven’t used my shoes for that time, just hanging around the beach and pool. The house is so beautiful and wonderful, the pool is great and the waves are a lot of fun. The place is very well kept and everyone working here is friendly and helpful. I would recommend La Veranera for anyone who wants to relax by the wonderful Playa El Coco, spend some time with family/friends and have some good food. Don’t miss out on the spactacular sunset, right in front of the house!

The beach is clean, water with great temperature and the eateries have fairly good and fresh food. Since it is a very hot climate it is better to visit early in the day of late afternoon. Once in the water you won't want to leave!

Reviewing El Veranera is a tricky task. For the price we paid, one might question a number of things but I want very much to bear in mind that this is Nicaragua, Central America, and that most definitely must be understood. Having said that, around £100 per night (US $140) can, at times feel a little steep. For this price we got the best room in the house; ocean-front views, king bed, large bathroom and in-room WiFi, beach towels, housekeeping, ceiling fan, two separate double-aspect French doors with ocean and pool view and an excellent breakfast that is essentially home-cooked. Gallo pinto and eggs, fresh fruit and home made bread and fresh juices every day. What more could you ask? We had a fantastic view to the ocean. We needed to take only a few steps to the beautiful swimming pool; we were 40 stunning minutes walk from Playa El Flor. While we were here we had the absolute pleasure of being taken care of by Christina and Christophe. Although their placement is as volunteers, their individual care and attention to detail were superior to that which we have experienced in many fine hotels around the world. The evening meals prepared by both under the supervision of Christophe were excellent. Thai curry, Mediterranean chicken, fajitas, bolognese, locally caught fish, home-made pizza and more - all meals were absolutely delicious - the best food we had on a 4-week trip through Nicaragua- and there was always more if you chose. There is all you can drink filtered water and ice which is a must. So where are the negatives? I guess I can’t quite shake the feeling that - again - at this price, I expected, let’s say something along the lines of this: Finer quality bed linens Hot water shower (it can occasionally feel warmish if you adjust the flow just right) Room fixtures and fittings could be upgraded The area around the property, I felt, could have been tidier; let’s say easier on the eye. Free use of body-board and surf boards (these items must be rented by the hour or day) The furniture around the pool and at dinner seems a little tired (much like myself) - the sun-bed cushions were a bit tatty. Perhaps some varnish or paint touch-ups here and there. Lastly, I don’t feel that an extra charge should be levied for the use of air-conditioning. Look, you might read this and say, ‘Wow, he’s too fussy, he’s asking for too much, he’s way too critical’. You may well be right...after all, I freely acknowledge that the location of this property could hardly be better. Indeed, for us, the location itself and the care from the staff really made this a wonderful, relaxing and essentially lovely place to be. So, dear reader, you must make your choice at the end of the day. Like me, you may need to shake off a few concerns, make some allowances and simply enjoy. Thanks for reading.

Response from Fishing-Nicaragua, Manager at La Veranera - Playa El Coco
Responded Apr 25, 2018
Hi Dave, first of all I want to say thank you for your review and I am very happy you enjoyed your stay with us. We really appreciate reviews that also point out advice how to improve and we constantly try to do so. As you already said we are in a pretty remote place and some things are easier others are harder to manage. As I was not in Nicaragua during your stay (which is a pitty because I heard you are a great couple) I could not have an eye on the gardening but in general the surrounding areas and gardening is part of our workers daily routine. Again I would have been glad to meet you in person and thank you very much for your helpful and detailed review. All the best Jan

Lovely and peacefull location, worth driving for. The dinner at the place is medium, but there is a excellent restaurant (go just before sunset) at the hill side.Be aware that breakfast is served late ( 8:30-8:45).
