This hotel is close to all facilities. We had a good room, which was clean, comfortable and quiet. The breakfast room overlooks the pool and buffet breakfast was available. There is no Covid on Pico but everyone had to sanitise their hands before wearing gloves to serve their own breakfast from open dishes. Staff were present around serving area to monitor supplies but they took this as an opportunity to chat and in doing so, they obstructed the one-way entry/exit system.
There is no restaurant at the hotel but the receptionist gave recommendations for Picoceana and the 5 Cafe, both of which were middling to good.

I picked this hotel largely based on its location; though admittedly, there's not a lot of choice in the city centre.

As a property, it's somewhat utilitarian in that Eastern Europe in the 80s sort of feel. If there's not many people staying, there's little charm. That said, staff were friendly. After a full day touring the island, was a nice surprise to find a complimentary bowl of fruit laid out in my room.

A coffee maker would have been a nice tough, especially for those leaving early to catch a flight out.

Free secure parking is available.

All in all, would recommend. Am sure it has more character in busier season. ;-)

The hotel is ideally situated with the ferry port literally a maximum of 5 minutes walk away and near to the main amenities. Staff were helpful and the hotel was, as others have said, a bit outdated and had no personality. The room AC works well and the bed was comfortable. The idea of producing a card to pick up towels and making sure you returned the card to prevent paying €25 per card penalty seemed unnecessary and having to pay for the gym seemed very unusual. We did sit round the pool on a cloudy day for a while but decided against going in so I cannot comment on what looked like a well maintained pool.
The breakfast was good and they seemed to spread foods out which meant we could get to dishes easily without crowding and queues. Thank you.
Restaurants were difficult to find because the good ones were already booked up so I’d recommend booking your meals at least a day in advance. We ate in the square nearby which , although reasonable, was a cafe rather than a restaurant.

We have been here for 7 day in a suit with 2 children. The room itself was not to bad and also quite roomy, however, on the big balcony were no furniture at all and the two beds for the kids which were in the "living room" were also questionable. The breakfast was as i know it from Portugal, so nothing special but ok. Most likely also due to Covid the whole thing was a little downgraded! The pool could be used with restriction due to Covid, but if you ask if you can use it it should be possible to remove the cleaning roboter!
As many sad before, the hotel is quite "used" and some renovations are surely necessary to valuate the 4 stars. We have been in the newer part of the complex so there it does not look to bad, but sure the older part looks run down as hell!

Stay started with a 2-night voucher, then extended by another 4 at #135
The hotel is relatively new and well located, with modern materials and equipment, we were surprised that 2 of the elevators were permanently out of service from the 2nd day of stay.
The cleanliness of the room was good except for the windows - The room had a spectacular view over the harbour, but the windows from the window and the balcony were almost opaque from dirt - Generally speaking, all the hotel windows needed urgent cleaning.
Bath glass also almost opaque, but this by accumulation of limestone, silicone with high accumulation of bacteria.
The walls in the common areas need cleaning as well.
Curtains generally poorly installed, with missing hooks or ripped showing carelessness.
The room air conditioner was always in the "cold" position throughout the entire stay, despite our request to change to "hot" at the reception, which informed us that the maintenance manager would change this setting the next morning - this did not happen.
Damaged TV on our arrival, immediately replaced by maintenance.
Relatively poor breakfast for a 4-star hotel, with the cakes to be taken from day to day, the sliced bread was not fresh, the breakfast beans were black (!) the bacon and the sausages in the "recheaud" were incorrectly confectioned to the point of being inappropriate for consumption.
On a positive note, the pancakes were delicious and made by us at the time on equipment available for the purpose.
The room had a coffee machine - a positive point - a pity that the coffee was not replacement (on request only and charged).
Wiped in good quality and always clean.
Many pillows available, mattress a little rich.
Amenities available in good quantity and always readily reposted.
Great lighting in the room in particular and in the hotel in general.
Collaborators generally unsocial or shy, denoting little pleasure with the public, with the exception of a seemingly more experienced collaborator in the breakfast room.

While this hotel is located right in the Marina next to the ferry terminal you are in for a few surprises. Let's start that it feels like you went back in time. The hotel seems pretty old, where you don't even have in room safes and if want to store something you have to ask the front desk to store it in the safe for you. When you hlgwt to your floor there are 2 full bathrooms which makes you think that you are in some dorm room with shared bathrooms, but that's not the case. There were nice surprises as well, where the pool has salt water vs plain old chlorinated. Another nice surprise was the breakfast, which had the cutest pancakes that were made by a machine that most of the people could not figure out how to work. The hotel is pretty clean nevertheless. Another surprises is if you are a light sleeper is the location of the ferry right by your windows which makes a pretty loud honking signal when it leaves and the last one leaves after midnight.

Stayed three nights in the hotel. The room was fresh and breakfast was good in comparison with others we have experienced on other islands on this trip. Was slightly disappointed they have a sauna but would charge us an hourly fee to turn it on.

The outside pool looked nice and the laundry service was quick. There are admittedly limited hotel options on the island but this hotel isn't bad.

We made a family trip through the azores islands, a portuguese territory 2-3 hours off the coast of the mailand by plane. We made a point of visiting all the volcanic islands. It was extremely hard to get hotel and restaurant reservations, forcing us to settle for least favorites. The Caravela Hotel was one of those. I did expect more.
People were nice enough, no complaints here. In my room the air conditioning was not working. I alerted reception and was informed that they were aware of 3 rooms
without A/C, but " tomorrow" it will be fixed.
It was never fixed and there were no other rooms available. It was a Hot Stay, to say the least. The answer to my asking daily was: "you know, we are on an island"...
Theroom was ok and clean. If you are somewhat demanding as far as matresses go, get another hotel.
There is an excelent breakfast and plenty of parking.
Next time I come, I will book months in advance and stay at the island of Graciosa at the pousada on the city of Horta.

Average, good hotel but we had some problems.
Child with eye irritation due to excessive chlorine in the pool, even I, who is used to it, felt that it was not normal.
My friends had problems at the laundry, they had to speak to the management about the laundry employee who insisted on saying that she hadn't made a mistake with the laundry, it was very unpleasant.
My refrigerator in the room didn't work and I asked for it to be replaced or repaired but no one came, so I let it go.
The bar and reception staff are friendly but not enough to make us want to come back, we're sorry.
Then we went to the same chain hotel in São Jorge and the difference is between water and wine, the stars should be reversed for both.
The strong point is that the location is perfect, right in front of the boat station and scooter rentals, etc.

There is apparently this larger tourist hotel in Magdalena. It is located directly at the port, so the way to the ferry is not far. The hotel has several wings. Some rooms have views of Pico Mountain. I was lucky enough to get an upgrade to an extremely spacious suite, room 216, with a very large balcony overlooking the harbour.
The housekeeping works very well, the first time in the Azores that the rooms were ready by midday. Again, no outlet in the bathroom (is this the case everywhere?), but a well-functioning, permanently installed hairdryer.
Small deficiency is the situation at breakfast. The breakfast room is much too small for the amount of guests. It was overcrowded every day during my visit (pre-season), so guests had to look for seats in the vestibule. However, no additional tables were set up there.
The breakfast itself captivates with a lot of cakes and cakes, in the fridge there are yogurts. Guests can stock up on coffee at several stations. Fresh fruit is served and there was also fruit salad on several days, but sometimes with canned fruit.
The hotel also has a nicely landscaped pool with sun loungers. There are towel cards with which you can borrow a corresponding sun towel.

How far of a walk is it to the ferry terminal...I have elderly person in our group...Thank you
Answer from Medrosr
Portsmouth, New Hampshire72 contributions15 helpful votes
The hotel faces the ferry terminal, but I would suggest you look at another hotel. The bath tub is built up from the floor, and difficult to get in and out of. I am 70 and I found it difficult. Had to grab on to the towel rack and get in and out. Lights in the hallway very dim, and the stairway down to the main floor is also very dim. Might be difficult for an elderly person if the elevator not working which it wasn't during our stay.
