It's my first time to travel alone and I have chosen Coron to start my solo trips. I have gone through the web and have become interested with Coron Backpackers Guesthouse. I booked a room (which is good for two pax) for Php550 a night which is really affordable.

I did not set my expectations high since as per reviews, it was located in a "slum area" but upon arrival, I have this "homey" feeling and felt nostalgic with our house in the province. The surroundings smell but I can tolerate it. And once you enter the guesthouse you won't be able to trace the smell of the surroundings at all. That is, the staffs do maintain the cleanliness of the guesthouse.

Their (the staffs) service was unexpectedly great. They have accommodated to my needs and for a first time solo traveler, all my questions were answered. They are my go-to people and are very friendly. They have suggested an agency for my tours and have contacted a van for the transfer going to airport. They have helped me the where-to's of the kitchen as I cooked chicken adobo for my dinner. I highly appreciate their comfort and bath rooms since they are well cleaned and maintained. They have free wifi, fridge for your beverages, and television while you rest in their living room.

Quiet time is strictly followed. I slept with no disturbances. The rooms have adequate ventilation however they might get hot during the daytime (that's why it is advisable to have tours during the day). They cater laundry services as well.

Thank you for the hospitality Ate Judy, Ate Maricar and Ate Sol (include Ate Juls as well :D). My stay in Coron has been wonderful and I hope to come back there again soon as I look forward to other tours I haven't tried yet. Kudos to you guys!

Found Coron Backpackers by chance because we saw a little poster on the wall of Kuweba and we were surprised to learn that you could get a decent room for 380. When we checked the place out the next day, it was perfect!!

The place was clean and homey, it had a kitchen (so we could save on food), a bathroom that offered enough privacy to go #2, a nice living room where we could all watch downloaded movies (there was a usb port!!), the most helpful staff (TJ and ate Dina), and of course, decent rooms.

The rooms were simple fan rooms and the whole place was made of bamboo which made it not very soundproof, but also helped it stay cooler even during the occasional blackout that the entire town of Coron would suffer every now and then (minus the swanky hotels which had their own generators)

The communal space was roomy and comfortable which made people want to hang around it and also made for a great place to meet people and make friends. It's probably the only place in Coron town that has a communal space so well-suited for people travelling alone and looking to meet similar-minded people.

Stayed in Coron Backpackers for about 2 weeks and we were really sad to leave it. During our stay, TJ, the manager, just always made us feel at home. He was really helpful for getting the best and safest deals for tours and whatnot. And he also happily fixed everything that went wrong in the guesthouse (a lot of which was caused by my own clumsy companion)

First of all I really liked the guesthouse. The owners are very pleasant. The place is very clean as well. Unfortunately the location is not that good. It's more in a rural area. Cat fights during the night, family life of the neighbours starts very early as well.

I stayed in a private room with a friend and the room had no lock from the inside. A man came into our room at in the middle of night while were sleeping and sexually assaulted my friend - he ran and got away. We tried to report the incident to the manager on duty and managements first reaction was to ask us why we didn't lock the door (again there was no lock). There was no urgency to call the police and report him, the hostel simply moved us to another lock-less room. The next morning we were asked to explain what happened again. We were accused of being drunk and asked if we had invited him to the room, neither of which was true. The hostel even told us that we can't write a poor review because "this never happens". To top it all off we were refused a refund.

The way this whole thing was handled is disgusting. How dare you accuse the victims of wrongdoing!!!

Avoid this hostel at all costs!!!!!!

Response from I B, Owner at Coron Backpacker Guesthouse
Responded Dec 29, 2016
There ARE locks in EVERY room. If theirs something wrong, please report it immediately, not after staying several days or after something happen. We have changed some locks to bigger ones, so theirs easier to see. As i understand it, it wasn't possible to prove who the guilty was, so they didn't wanna go to the police? But of course we keep an eye on the suspect and will report the incidence. This is the first time we had any incidence like this, Coron is basically a very safe place, But to all guests! Please use the locks, if yo have problem using it, report it immediately, so we can fix it.

My sister and I stayed here after an amazing trip with Tao Philippines. I highly recommend that trip! This place however, I would not recommend. We picked it for the super cheap price...which is the only redeeming factor.

It's advertised as a traditional bamboo stilt home. Which sounds awesome until you realize the water that you're on stilts over top of is basically raw sewage. We decided to try and ignore the smell since we were exhausted but when we woke up the next morning, all of our snacks and vitamins had been chewed on by a rat and my sister heard it scurrying around the room in the middle of the night.

Bottom line: the rock bottom price does not outweigh the sewage smell and presence of rats.

The inside of the hostel itself is okay. I planned 7 nights but only stayed 3 for reasons listed below. The common room is great, the rooms are individual with a fan but far from quiet. You hear babies, machine motors, coughing sick locals, every word fellow bper's say from the room next door. It's in the slums. Theres chairs to smoke outside but being outside in this area is not nice. There's garbage everywhere. It either floats at high tide or sits on the ground at low tide. There's loads of Mosquitos and the water drains into the area we walk around. It smells at low tied including in the hostel. There was also a trail of blood on the sidewalk when I was first walking up. The plug-ins in the rooms don't hold a plug well so they always fall out. Most light bulbs dont work. The back bathrooms are ignored. The positives are the kitchen, it a 7 min walk to the market, fridge with my own shelf, common room with tv area although the staff occupy the couches so it doesn't help much for paying guests. Wifi is also pretty good. Power goes out at 7am and comes back on at around.... 5ish Filipino time so between 5 and 630. Keep in mind the outlets in the room don't hold the plugs in place to charge at night. The staffs very friendly. I'm not sure if they work much but them and their friends sure can occupy the area well. There are positives and this hostel could b good if u don't care about cleanliness or efficiency for 500 pesos a night. There's a hostel just down the road on the right side that is much more comfortable, clean and effective for the same deal. I'd Recommend Coron bp's only if there's no other options as it has some small benefits.

Of all the choices presented via web, I chose (I did the itinerary) Coron Backpacker’s because of the following reasons.

1.) Very affordable at Php250/pax/night (Actually it’s 500 per room but it’s only for 2 pax. Additional person requires and additional Php250.) So for three nights, we only paid Php750.00 each.

2.) Very good website. Informative but succinct. Simple yet quite artistic.

3.) Option to cook. I like this option because of breakfast time.

4.) There’s a lounge area where you can meet other guests and mingle. (I actually had more mingling done in the kitchen)

5.) Easy communication. They reply readily.

This place has a nice relaxed backpacker atmosphere, but beware of getting the shortest straw with the room selection. Mine (room 3) was dim and dusty, with worn-out sheets swarmed by small insects and very weak fan. With thin bamboo walls and location just between common space, reception and beer-drinking patio, there was constant noise coming in to the room until late night and from early morning. So unfortunately, after a couple of sleepless nights and no possibility change room, I had to check out and find somewhere else to stay in Coron.
