We arrived at Korkor Lodge after 2 days of hot, dusty trekking, having stayed the previous night in a mud hut without water or electricity. The sight of a large glass of chilled wine, a lovely bedroom with a stunning view and a shower with lots of piping hot water was just heaven! The service was wonderful and the Swiss/Italian owners were utterly charming.

There are lots of wonderful churches and a local market to visit nearby and so |I would strongly recommend that you add Korkor Lodge to your visit to Ethiopia.

We stayed here for 2 nights in February 2020 while visiting the churches and hiking in Gheralta. The rooms are very comfortable, the food is good and the service is excellent. Views are spectacular. All in all, it's a lovely place to use as a base for hiking in the mountains. Ethiopia has so much to offer, and this is a great place to include on any trip.

After we’d left the lodge and continued our trip by car down to the Danakil desert I realised I’d left my beloved Columbia trainers behind. Messages were sent. They were found. They were then put on a bus to Mekele which is 2 hours away with a member of staff and delivered to me just in time for the next leg of our 1400km road trip. I mean who does that these days? Thank you Luigi and team. The lodge is perched on a little escarpment overlooking Tigray’s desert drama. It’s not luxurious which is at it should be in this landscape: comfy rooms, delightful people, somewhere to relax or if you want to clamber up steep mountain paths to extraordinary rock- hewn churches. Angelo the manager thoughtful and attentive. I could nitpick: more could be done with local ingredients by the chef to liven things up. For my money more injira less pasta. They could get some tonic in although gin and freshly squeezed papaya juice with lime works. Overall - memorable.

We stayed in a private bungalow with a view of the impressive Gheralta mountains from our patio. Excellent accommodations and food. A refreshing place to return after hiking the mountains and exploring churches. Turns out that not only are the owners friendly and great managers, but also are experts on the area who have published books about the region and its history. They generously spent an hour one day answering our questions and tutoring us. Beautiful landscaping and sweet animals (horses, dogs, cats, birds) add to the authentic Ethiopian lodge feel. Can't recommend this place highly enough.

This is probably the best place to stay if visiting the Gheralta region, period. We ended up spending two nights in this new lodge as an alternative to the well-known and advertised Gheralta lodge, which was fully booked at the time. That was a great choice!
The lodge is located in Megab, with a great view on the kororo escarpment and right in front of the Maryam Korkor track. Bungalows are just spectacular, with a patio, a huge bedroom and super-clean bathroom. All bungalows are located in a very quiet garden.

The lodge is run by an Italian and started activities in October 2014; only 4 bungalows were available at the time, but 6 more and a restaurant with library are under construction. As the owner was in Addis at the time, the lodge was managed by a very friendly woman (a former cook at the Italian embassy in Addis) and staff. Meals and breakfast were included in the room rate.

New lodge still under construction but currently has 3-4 rooms all with terraces, amazing well appointed, Italian tiling in the spacious bathrooms. The view is hard to describe it just takes your breath away. The restaurant is in a tent, but this gives a Laurence of Arabia feel. Restaurant, bar, reception and library are planned for Sept 2016 and a few more rooms (total 8 in all). Not for those who are $$ conscious but if you fancy a splurge it is worth it....owners Luigi and Francoise are incredibly welcoming!

We stayed at Korkor for one night, but would have loved to stay longer. Owners Luigi and Francoise were lovely. They were flexible and understanding when we had to adjust plans due to an unexpected work emergency.

The rates included all meals, which were served family style at a common table with all guests, and happily included plenty of fruits and vegetables (the salad at lunch was particularly delicious!). Francoise was attentive and constantly switching between English, French and Italian to ensure all guests at the table were included in the conversation. At Korkor we felt more like guests welcomed into their home than clients of a corporate hotel operation.

Each bungalow has a wonderful view facing the nearby mountains, and a shaded patio from which to enjoy it. The rooms are spacious and clean, with comfortable bed, floor-to-ceiling windows facing the mountains, nice bathrooms and hot showers.

From Korkor Lodge, it is a short (1 hour) but spectacular walk/hike to the rock hewn churches Maryam Korkor and Daniel Korkor, with many more churches nearby if you have more time. If you do not have your own transport, it is a real bonus to be close enough to visit churches on foot. The lodge can arrange one of the official local guides for you. We could have happily spent many more days hiking and visiting churches nearby.

It took us about 2.5 hours to drive from Korkor Lodge to Mekele Airport, though apparently it can take just 2 hours if you are not in a rickety minibus.

The lodge was perfectly situated to enjoy a great view of the mountains. The rooms are very spacious, private and clean. Very warm and friendly owner and staff. Would love to have had more variety for meals, the means served were still very good.

Korkor lodge was an amazing place! Really beautiful cabin/rooms, and in a location which gives a beautiful view of the mountains. Very close to many of the most famous rock hewn churches. The staff were very friendly and accommodating and the food was great. Highly recommend it!
