The Harbour House Hotel exceeded all my expectations! The new manager, Alexander was pleasant and helpful. The room offered a great view of the Ganges Harbour. The Hotel is ideally located being close enough to walk into Ganges but far enough away from any of the downtown noise. The bed in the room was extremely comfortable and the decor was sleek and modern with a large
TV. It was a bonus having coffee and a coffee maker in the room, which made it easy to enjoy sitting outside in the morning on the room patio chairs to greet the day. The fridge in the room was handy to have for all the food items we had brought with us. We ate at "Woodleys" the Restaurant inside the hotel for breakfast and dinner and the meals were excellent and good value for your money. In the evening in the Restaurant/Lounge had live entertainment which made our dinner most enjoyable. I would highly recommend staying at the this Hotel if you are on Salt Spring Island.

We stayed in the Salish Suite with our adult son. It was a large room with plenty of space to spread out, a huge TV, private patio with great furniture, very clean with update decor. The pull out bed was fine for our son but they had a very large, heavy table in front of it which was difficult to move so we could open the bed. I liked that the door to our suite was accessible from outside the hotel, making it easy to come and go. There is a small takeout restaurant in the lobby for breakfast and lunch. I highly recommend it for breakfast. It’s not quick, staffed by only one woman who makes everything from scratch but worth the wait. The staff was friendly and helpful. The pictures on the hotel website made it look like it’s on the water. In fact there is a pretty busy road between. It’s across the street from a pub and marina which are both noisy places. That’s the only reason I would give the hotel 4 rather than 5 stars.

Dear Katydid2014, Thank you for taking the time to review us! I'm so glad you found the hotel clean, the staff friendly, the food delicious, and your room comfortable during your stay. With so many travel restrictions and high COVID case counts in the interior of BC, we found many travelers heading to the southern gulf islands of BC where it is much safer to travel. We're sorry the noise from the increased ferry traffic during our busy summer months damped your stay. Please come visit us again during our winter months (where we have NO SNOW unlike Calgary!) and enjoy the laid back, quite splendor of our peaceful little island. Warm Regards, Alexander Fischer-Jean General Manager

Arriving at the tail end of COVID-19 meant we had no room service and instead had to revert to asking for supplies at the front desk. We gave the front desk a list of what our needs were; the usual stuff such as soap, coffee, shampoo, etc.. When we collected the "package" from reception we found we'd been given only two Nespresso pots of coffee; clearly they must have been short of supplies!!

We had a room at the front which was definitely the right choice as the rooms at the back overlook the car park. Beware that there is no elevator at the hotel. They do offer some assistance with luggage, but I'm guessing most people will lug their own cases up the flights of stairs.

On the second day the restaurant decided not to open due to the heat wave but no notice was posted on the door as to why or when it might open again so we had to ask at the reception desk.

The bathroom is somewhat short of shelf space for toiletries so some degree of initiative is needed in order to place more than one person's stuff.

The front desk people are very friendly as are the people in the restaurant (when it's open), and the hotel is about a 10 minute walk into town which is useful.

Dear K6832VKdavidh, Thank you for taking the time to review us. We're terribly sorry that we had to close the restaurant for one day during the unprecedented heat wave we experienced during your visit. The working conditions were simply unsafe for staff as the temperatures reached nearly 50 degrees Celsius in the kitchen! When you find yourself returning to Salt Spring Island again, please reach out to me directly and I would be happy to personally assist with your reservations. Kind regards,

Having stayed at this hotel a few years back and really enjoying it, my husband and I were looking forward to a return visit. We were not aware that the hotel had been sold and the new owners had done major rennovations to the place. What a total disappointment! All the charm is gone. The room furnishings are minimal and I canot believe anyguest wants a full-length mirror in front of the toilet!
Service was absolutely terrible. When we checked in, a young woman with off-putting facial piercings was completely thrown by the fact that she had morethan one reservation with the same last name. Even giving her my first name didn't ease her confusion too quickly. She then gave us keys to a second floor room which she didn't bother to tell us was located onthe second floor of a different building! We decided to have dinner at Woodleys, located behind the lobby.
One poor waitperson was saddled with a room full of people and the wait time was way too long. During the wait, though, I had time to observe people sending their food back to the kitchen with various complaints. The continenal breakfasts consisted of coffee and toast. Not even hot water for tea! Hot water was also not exactly abundant in the shower. We will definately not be returnng to Harbour House.

Thank you for taking the time to write with your feedback. We truly appreciate it. I am very sorry you did not enjoy your stay. We have not yet renovated our annex building so we will definitely be removing that mirror, we can review our check in process with our new team members to make sure they include directions as that can be really frustrating. Our free continental breakfast includes coffee, tea, juice, oatmeal, cereal, house made granola, yogurt, fruit and toast. It is self serve and many items are kept in the public fridge. Thanks for visiting our popular restaurant and I hope that our dinner rush wasn’t too difficult. If you decide to return and would like some assistance please let us know and we would be pleased to help pick out a newly renovated room sans mirror. Thanks again for the feedback and I hope my response is helpful.

We stayed three nights and got no housekeeping service! We had to complain and the nice lady at the front desk explained they are having trouble hiring staff. No one warned us when we checked in and despite “clean room” sign on our door, no one called us to say “hey do you want some fresh towels?” At over $300/night, I expect a discount or at the very least an explanation, an apology or transparency.
The location was great but was disappointed that our harbour room was a ground level so not much of a view.

We booked here for 4 nights, and not once was our room cleaned, wastebaskets emptied, dishes removed, bed made, etc. We were told after the 2nd night that you had to ask for this service- but of course if you don’t know to ask, nothing will happen. And even when we did ask, and were assured that the room would be cleaned, we returned from our day out to find nothing had changed. We did get clean towels when we asked for them.

There was no room service, no breakfast offered, only dinner ( very mediocre) that we had to collect from the kitchen ourselves on the one occasion we opted to eat in. We fully understand limitations due to Covid, but this was beyond the pale. Paul, who was on the desk most days, was extremely nice, but seemed to have no ability to effect any improvement in the housekeeping situation. Other staff were sullen and dismissive, citing Covid as a reason for the absence of any housekeeping.

Was this worth $380 per night for a harbour view « deluxe » room? No way. We were not advised of the bare bones situation when we booked, and had we known in advance would never have agreed to this rate. We feel quiet cheated.

We stayed at this terrible hotel for two nights at $500.00 plus per night. We received no cleaning service. When we asked about having our room cleaned the two rude and smug front desk clerks told us we needed to complete a form requesting service. The information was not provided when we checked in. I asked the clerk, who was there when we checked in, why we weren’t informed of this practice and he shrugged. Both clerks were completely disinterested in us or our issue. I indicated that they should provide guests with their protocols upon check-in and they basically stared blankly at me. There was zero customer service. I asked for more towels. Upon coming back to our room we found new towels on a counter. The dirty wet towels were still on the floor in the shower.
We tried to eat dinner in the hotel restaurant. We arrived at 7:15 pm. The restaurant had three tables with customers and the majority of the seats were empty. The hostess asked us if we had a reservation to which we replied no. She told us that was their Covid protocol. We left and ate across the street where we were not required to have a reservation. We ate at a few different establishments in Gange that weekend and no one required reservations.
I have travelled all over the world and have never had such terrible service at such an overpriced hotel. Their “Covid protocol” line is just an excuse for apathy and laziness. Why are there two clerks at the front desk doing nothing while customers can’t get any services. The hotel was not busy at all. There was hardly anyone there yet the island was quite busy with line- ups at restaurants in town. Where is the management? Don’t get tricked into staying here. It is not worth it.

Hello I am sorry your stay did not met your expectations. We do have housekeeping services and you should have been told how our housekeeping works upon your arrival. I apologize that this was not communicated to you properly. Everyone's comfort is important to us and we would like to respect where everyone is with their own comfort levels so we allow them the choice of whether they would like us to enter the rooms. We have chosen to have our guests make reservations with us in our restaurant so that we can ensure optimum service with limited staffing we are happy to provide quality over quantity. I am happy to here that other businesses were able to offer you what you were looking for. There are many beautiful places on island I glad you have been able to enjoy them. We look forward to your return to Salt Spring Island! Kelly Armstrong

We were going to the Saturday Salt Spring market and decided to go the night before and have dinner and a little get away. After reading the writeup on the Harbour House, we decided to splurge and took the "Deluxe Harbourview King room with patio". It was $500/ night. As far as I know this is the top room category. The pictures are amazing. Private patio, broad marina views, nice furnishings, inside and out.

The reality of what I got was totally different. Tiny "patio", cheap furniture, not at all private. Extremely limited harbour view and looking over a long dead-grass, not trimmed field. Room was sparsely furnished. Plus it smelled of off-gassing carpets and had a 1/2 bottle of wine in the mini-fridge from the last renter.

I talked to the front desk (twice) and was promised a call from the manager (twice). I sent an email to the manager. No answer from the manager.

I'm sure that there are nice rooms in front that match the pictures. The room I stayed in were not at all what was advertised and certainly not worth $500.

Be careful with these guys. You don't really know what you'll be getting.

Dear Mr. Hamilton, Thank you for taking the time to review us. We're sad to read that you were unhappy with your recent stay. As we mentioned to you before, not every room is exactly identical. Depending on the location in the building, some rooms have larger patios but smaller living rooms, others have larger bathrooms but smaller patios, etc. Rates also vary depending on time of year, availability and demand. As you booked our very last room at the last minute on a busy weekend, the rate is reflected accordingly. Unfortunately Salt Spring Island has experienced a severe drought this year and the Capital Regional District has imposed a stage 4 water restriction, which sadly prevents us from irrigating our terrace lawn. We just completed a full renovation of some of our guest rooms less then two weeks ago. The room you reserved was in this newly renovated building and we apologize for any residual scent of fresh paint, carpets, etc. that you experienced. Please kindly check your email again as I promptly replied to you once I had returned to the office. You will see that we extended a substantial discount and refund in hopes of making up for some of the dissatisfaction you experienced. All in all, we hope you had a safe trip home and hope you decide to stay with us again in the future. Kind Regards, Alexander Fischer-Jean General Manager

Several people from my organization are slated to stay here in a week; the organizer reserved a block of rooms for us but we had to register individually; the price was a fixed agreed upon rate.
I called to confirm my reservation over a weeks ago and the lady I spoke to could not confirm the price (it was more than double what we were told we would be paying). She said she would look into it and call back; which she did the following day. The message she left me was to call her back. However, I have tried three times to call them back. The first time there was no answer. The second time I left a voive mail to call me; no one did. The third time someone picked up the phone and put me on hold. After 5 minutes, it rang endlessly so I hung up. I followed up with an e-mail sent FROM THEIR WEBSITE stating all this. All I wanted to do was confirm my reservation and rate. Two days later, still haven't heard back.
I will be informing my event organizer to cancel all reservations and go somewhere else.

I was born and raised on salt spring island and I am ashamed to say that my stay at this place over the holidays to visit my family was horrible to say the least.. my rooms bathroom was dirty not fully cleaned, the coffee maker in the room was crusty and unmaintained, (only place to get coffee besides restaurant) there was an flood alarm going off for hours as no one maintained the snowed or shoveled the decks as the deck was covered in snow on our arrival and it rained all night witch caused flooding, the restaurant was advised to us by the front desk lady at check in as well as multiple signs, never opened as staffed showed up 45 minutes afterthe restaurant was suppose to open in a panic because the alarm and flooding the manager was overwhelmed telling employees to go get shovels and clear decks as we left to go get ourself aorning coffee in town as we couldnt get one there. At our check we told her how we felt when she asked how our stay was, in return we were brushed off after asking like it was taken personally why our stay wasn't good we were never offered any solution or even just apologized to for our experience. she told us she would call us later to resolve the issue but never did, after emailing her she didnt try to make up for the bad customer service or experience besides offering to give us the 33 doller credit from our bill for the restaurant we never got to use for our next stay because it never opened on the time advertised I sadly am ashamed to say I will not return to this place when I return for my next visit. Not to mention the pillows are horrible.
