The staff is so rude and lazy. If you're happy, they love you. If you have any issues, they are so incredibly rude. Only want to handle over email. I HIGHLY recommend not even dealing with them because they caused such a headache it affected my trip. there are other hotels in the area that are SOOOO much nicer and with better locations as well.
I stayed at the Backyard many times over the years and always had good experiences until now. I had to postpone my trip in January because my daughter got covid. I canceled my reservation within the time frame of their cancellation policy. They charged me for my room the day after I canceled. I asked for a refund and they denied it because when I emailed the hotel to cancel my reservation I didn’t ask to not be charged. Why would anyone want to be charged for a hotel stay they were not going to use? I contacted hotel. com where I made my reservation to argue on my behalf and this is the response of the manager at the Backyard. Hello Gina, This is about your Hotels.com booking from 03 Jan-05 Jan at The Backyard Hotel, Jaco. I have spoken to the manager at the hotel as requested and I am afraid that the refund has been denied by them as this was not requested before canceling the reservation. I tried requesting at least a partial refund but that was denied too. Thank You, Anand Upadhyay Hotels.com Customer Service Team I don’t usually do reviews but I feel there needs to be a consequence when businesses take your money after not honoring their owed policy.…
The location of this hotel is fantastic-literally on the beach! Its outside of downtown Jaco, which I enjoyed because it wasn't the typical busy touristy environment. This part of Jaco beach was also much nicer and had far less people. Eating at the 3 closest restaurants, all next door provided alot of variety. Room was clean and functional, but spent most of the time outside on the beach. The iguanas were a hit!
We didn't know what to expect but this place is away from the downtown area of Jaco. We stayed in 103 and 104.....there's only maybe 10 or so rooms so it's small. Wasn't busy so we had the pool to ourself and the beach area! We were only going to book for 1 night and ended up staying 3. Awesome internet!
This hotel is amazing! The location is great with restaurants, bars, and a convenience store within walking distance. The room was clean, great patio area with a pool, and right on the beach. My friends and I stayed in the ocean front suite and experienced the most amazing sunsets every afternoon right from our balcony. The staff were very accommodating and went above and beyond to ensure we had the best experience in Jaco. Ana was super helpful in recommending activities for us to do and booked everything for us. I highly recommend staying here!
Convenient hotel to surf. Upstairs rooms are better than downstairs rooms. Breakfast at a local restaurant does not have a lot of options. Get a room closer the beach versus the road. Lots of trucks engine brake at all times of the night. Rooms are a little dated.
The hotel is beautiful just like the photos they post !! The upstairs rooms are huge with a big balcony. The staff is amazing and very helpful! I wish the restaurant and bar were still open ! Hopefully next time when we come that will be open! Location you can’t beat especially if your a surfer
My family of four had a great time here. The rooms were very comfortable (nice shower, memory foam mattresses). View of ocean from balcony. Perfect pool for the kids. Great beach access. Restaurants nearby. We would have stayed here for days but were on our way to Quepos. Very secure. Excellent experience!!
I cant say enough about this wonderful place. Located right on the beach with the calming sound of the crashing waves. This place is a dream. Looking out on the balcony we could overlook the pool and beach. The room had ample space, bed was large and all bathroom met expectations. They even took care of our laundry for a small fee. I would definitely recommend the Backyard Hotel to anyone looking for a beach side stay.
This is the first review I've ever posted on Tripadvisor. In fact, I rarely post reviews anywhere, but feel compelled to clarify some of the claims BH makes on their website. We recently spent 2 nights at the hotel expecting: - luxurious rooms, that were actually very simple and very old/outdated - spectacular ocean views in every room, that in fact gave us views of a large dumpster next to pool and the adjacent buildings and fences. - beautiful beach with world class waves,,,. The waves are great for surfing and boogie boarding if you're a very good swimmer, but forget about casual swimming or the kids playing in the gentle waves, as the surf is very rough and unrelenting. Another problem is the sand in this area of Hermosa Beach is a very dark brown/grey and too hot to stand on during the day. If you watch the video on the BH website, they don't really show the beach or anyone enjoying it. That's because the sand is unbearably hot during the day. - The pool is very small and located on the side of the hotel. It's surrounded by a fence, recycling dumpster and the hotel. There's very little room around the pool itself for lounging and the pool itself gets very crowded once 4-5 people get in it. Perhaps the biggest misconception is that this hotel is on a beautiful, quiet stretch of the Pacific Ocean. In reality its a mere 20 steps from a main highway. Plan on leaving your sound machine at home and let the sound of large 18-wheelers serenade you to sleep (or likely not) as they barrel down the road at all hours of the night. My intention is not to say this is a horrible place that everyone will hate, as I'm sure others have/will find that it meets their expectations, but in the end the Backyard Hotel was an incredible disappointment to our family. I'm posting this review hoping it might help other travelers. Pura Vida!…
