Detailed Reviews
Hatari Lodge is a real breath of fresh air, as it is unlike the other safari lodges and modern hotels in the Tanzanian tourist/safari circuit. The Lodge is actually an old farmstead with tropical gardens and a main building with a patio and deck overlooking a swamp area that fills with wildlife every day and evening. The accommodations are in cottages or in some guesthouses built in the style of the original farmstead. The furnishings are antique and "rustic". One has the feeling of being in an historic homestead far away from the world. Giraffes and vervet monkeys, and sunbirds, make the morning gardens a sheer joy. On clear mornings you can see the peak of Kilimanjaro. The staff are wonderful and friendly; the food is excellent; and the main building (bar, lounge, restaurant) is filled with memorabilia from the film "Hatari" with John Wayne. Overall, this is a lovely place to stay for a few nights and days at the beginning or start of your Tanzanian safari. There are really interesting excursions up the slopes of Mt. Meru, nearby craters, and the area called "Little Serengeti" which usually has buffalo, antelopes, zebras and other game browsing.

We returned to Hatari Lodge this year because of our pleasant stay there in 2021. It is closer to Kilimanjaro Airport than lodges in Arusha, so it is a convenient place for kicking off or ending a visit to Arusha National Park and places further afield in the region. This lodge offers you peace and quiet, being relatively small and intimate, You can indulge in the luscious meals, watch game in the marsh area below the lodge (enjoy sundowners on a small deck), or go on some excursions to Ngurdoto Crater, "Little Serengeti", the slopes of Mount Meru ( fascinating for their different vegetation zones) or to Little Momella Lake and Big Momella Lake fed by springs from Kilimanjaro. Mt. Meru is often clear, in plain view; on clear mornings you can also see Kilimanjaro. You do not have to leave the lodge grounds to see many browsing giraffes; naughty blue monkeys, vervet monkeys and colobus monkeys; mousebirds and other species; antelopes and buffalo. A leopard with a limp frequents the area around the lodge: watch out for her. The lodge specializes in organic and natural foods; the meals are sumptuous. You might be surprised by the offering of baobab juice, hibiscus juice in place of the usual soda drinks. The bar offers a good selection of local beers and South African wines.
Try this out-of-the-ordinary retreat, enjoy the friendly and dedicated staff as well.

Started our Safari here. Great beginning as the lodge is in the middle of the national park which means you’re able to watch wildlife from the terrace. On the first day a group of giraffes visited the lodge and didn’t bother the guets.
Really nice staff and good food, too.

Hatari Lodge is wonderfully situated and, depending on the time of year, will welcome you with a nice fire situated in the dining room.
The rooms were clean and nicely appointed, but we had no idea when we booked a stay here for three days they are leaning very heavily toward vegetarian and no meat except for possibly fish and if it's not good for you, we don't stock it. Very limited bar with no soda for mixers. Soda has sugar and that's bad for you so we'll make sure you can't have it. Ended up just getting our own in town:) Had to request sugar for tea/coffee or cereal as that's not on the table either because it's bad for you. We had some excellent soups and if we were vegetarian I have a hunch we would have appreciated the creativity of the chef and the kitchen.
The lady who was the owner/in charge of the kitchen was rather huffy as she was put out we weren't vegetarian and they only make a store run once a week. She definitely was of the mindset our dining preferences should have been conveyed by our safari company. Maybe so, maybe not, but her demeanor didn't inspire the warm and fuzzies.
The wine was very expensive and very limited selection. Rather than rely on the stock at the bar, I would say bring your own.
The water bottle in the beds at night were a nice touch as was the evening fire. They did have robes we were able to use which was terrific when you wake up to a chilly morning.
The place was okay, but a long way from my favorite just because of the items on the menu and what they served.
Staff outstanding!

Thank you so much for taking the time to review your recent stay. We appreciate all our valued guests’ feedback. We are sorry to hear that you feel we are not one of your favourite places to stay at due to our meals and food values. Our philosophy is to preserve and respect the planet and we feel strongly about conservation and responsible tourism. We are situated in the Arusha National Park. We support over 20 small scale suppliers between Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru by purchasing our fresh, organic produce from them. We avoid biological and chemical contamination on all our produce. We reduce our food waste as well as our carbon footprint, therefore we only do our shopping once a week and do not serve buffets. During breakfast and dinner, our meals are 90% meat based – lamb, beef and chicken were offered during your stay. We are sorry to hear that you feel all our meals were vegetarian. Our lunches and afternoon snacks are however vegetarian, again, to reduce our carbon footprint. Culture, conservation, and creativity in the kitchen is what we believe in and we apologies that you felt we were not serving this. We are however pleased to hear that you enjoyed the warm water bottle and that our staff were outstanding. Although we seemed to not be one of your most favoured stops, we do still hope you took some great memories and moments away with you. Life is to be lived in harmony and here at Hatari that’s how we practice they way we live and how we serve. Until we meet again, stay safe and travel wise!

Hatari Lodge exceeded our expectations. The rooms are beautiful with with a fire place and local artefacts. The lounge, bar and dining area is very comfortable. The bonus is the decking that runs out onto the plains where we watched a large herd of buffalo, giraffes and waterbuck.
The food was delicious and very tasty. The staff were very attentive especially Weston and Micah who were fun, helpful and explained about all the different fruit and vegetables that the Lodge uses. They are a great asset to Hatari Lodge.

Me and my husband stayed here for one night on our honeymoon! One of our only regrets is not staying here longer. Hatari lodge was AMAZING!! The staff were so welcoming and the accommodations were beautiful and comfortable. Everyone staying at the lodge eats dinner together and it truly feels like a family atmosphere. The lookout point at the main area was amazing and we loved that a troop of monkeys joined us for breakfast! The only critique we had was that there wasn’t enough warm water to fill the tub. We’d definitely stay here again!!

Hatari is a good place to stay for day trips into Arusha National Park and a perfect starting point for safari newbies. The setting is colonial style and the resident wildlife is right there. The service good, the food average; the welcome bowl of hearty soup upon our midnight arrival was excellent as was the chicken dinner one evening. The rooms were nice, water hot enough with decent water pressure, however they were stuffy. This was alleviated by opening the windows but there are no screens so the possibility of monkeys or bats or bugs kept me awake. The credit card reader wasn’t working and declined all our cards, so bring cash.

Dear Erin, Our apologies that we missed you when staying at Hatari Lodge with your group of 6 friends. Thank you for coming and our sincere apologies for the two comments that you made and on which we have to work to make your stay more comfortable: Rooms & Mossi nets: I feel we experience the hottest and driest February ever and although we all have to adapt to our climate and environment changing, it sometimes hits you quicker than you can get into gear of prevention. Upon your return to Tanzania, which hopefully continues to stay on your bucket list, you’ll find all of our rooms and beds outfitted with mosquito netting and gauze in the windows. The job has started. All nets are done and the frames now need to fit the decor and comfort of the room. This will make a big difference. Apologies once again that your sleep was uncomfortable & disturbed. Food: Do please accept an explanation to understand better the way we operate as I continue with what is very close to my heart and making: Heritage Foods: You feel that we offer to little options? Please take note: We do not offer buffet-style meals as we are very conscious about food waste and would like to keep this to a minimum. Our menus are full of good plant-based protein. We do serve some animal protein but are very selective and in small quantities as our suppliers do not mass produce. You actually did enjoy a very balanced menu with us. It might be different to what you use to but its 100% healthy and filled with rich heritage ingredients that make a difference to the environment. We are being supplied by small-scale farming women with food ingredients that are of good quality, free of chemicals, and fairly supported. The value chain that weve build and which continues to grow by purchasing these organic foods is to be recommended and feeds towards a very sustainable way of agroforestry and, therefore, microclimate mitigation and thus conservation. What we can do and improve our management skills would be to inform our guests during their briefing upon arrival that we will announce the menu on the blackboard at the bar every morning, and in case there is a meal that is not to their liking, we should know by lunchtime to allow us to serve an alternative. Our vegetarian meals are all four courses. They still need to reach perfection, but we are doing already extremely well. I do hope that you appreciate our efforts towards our cuisine advocating for healthy ingredients, as this is the only way that we can make an impact on a healthy environment. Thank you for staying with us Erin and hoping that we will have the chance to host you with a little treat during your next stay with us and in Tanzania. Best regards Marlies Gabriel, owner Hatari Lodge

In years past Hatari was a favorite of mine but it recently changed ownership and new management. It’s no longer the friendly helpful customer service lodge it once was and has gone drastically the wrong direction. It’s sad, the location is an awesome starting point for an African adventure but it’s been ruined. One can only hope management recognizes its errors and changes back to what it once was but I fear that doesn’t seem to be likely. This last visit was my 6th African adventure but will be the last that includes this previously wonderful lodge. 😢
The rules are now demanding and structured more like a military college. Not at all friendly and accommodating. Many of the meals offered few (if any) options, several didn’t even include any kind of protein like (meat, poultry or fish). If you weren’t one of the first to breakfast then you were outta luck. The key items were gone and never replenished.
High $$$$ rates, poor food, lousy customer service and a long walks to everything. Not a lot of incentive to return. Goodbye old friend our time together has come to and end. I won’t be back.

Response from TAESafaris TZ, Marketing at Hatari Lodge
Responded Mar 5, 2023
Dear Path & John. We are still the original owners of the 20-year-old Hatari Lodge. Sorry that we have missed you. And didn't know that you were returning visitors to our lodge or park. Big Cat Adventure should have alerted us. I am very sorry to hear about us not reaching your expectations and that you don’t want to return. Hatari Lodge has been inside the Arusha National Park since 2017. That is what has changed. Changed in the sense that we have a new landlord: the Tanzanian National Park. AND have to obey their rules & regulations, which can come across as very strict as you are not allowed to walk off the premises due to our vast number of wildlife which rooms around the lodge 24/7. The beauty of watching wildlife from your rooms, verandahs, and platform comes at a cost. The increase in the cost of stay has to do with the additional park fees & concession fees, which before 2017 did not exist and now double the cost of your stay per person per day. For what it is worth. Conservation comes with a price. National Parks have to be protected. If we continue with the speed of destruction due to climate change, we will be left with no more paradise. We enjoy the wildlife roaming around the lodge, and we do enjoy the vegetation slowly growing back. I hope this answers some of your complaints and questions ? Summarised in a nutshell: 1. Did the lodge change ownership: No! We have a new landlord. 2. Are there new rules? We actually don’t know exactly what you mean by this, but yes, you are not allowed to wander off the premises without a ranger ( costly ) or a local guide from the lodge (possible). If that is what you mean? I continue with what is very close to my heart and making: Heritage Foods: 3. You claim that our meals offered were not up to standard, that there are no options and too little animal protein? I am surprised that you would like something other than our very healthy cuisine with the local, traditional, and heritage foods that we serve! All are supplied by small-scale farming women: from the Sadaani coastal forest, the Eastern Arc Mountains, Kilimanjaro & Mt Meru towards Ngorongoro & Lake Victoria. The ingredients are of good quality, free of chemicals, and fairly supported. The value chain that weve build and which continues to grow by purchasing these organic foods is to be recommended and feeds towards a very sustainable way of agroforestry and, therefore, microclimate mitigation and thus conservation. Please take note: We do not buy from supermarkets. We do not offer buffet-style meals as we are very conscious about food waste and would like to keep this to a minimum. Our menus are full of good plant-based protein. We do serve some animal protein but are very selective and in small quantities as our suppliers do not mass produce. You did enjoy a very balanced menu with us. It is definitely different to what you use to but its 100% healthy and filled with rich heritage ingredients that make a difference to the environment. Our vegetarian meals are all four courses. They still need to reach perfection, but we are doing already extremely well. I do hope that you appreciate our efforts towards our cuisine advocating for healthy ingredients, as this is the only way that we can make an impact on a healthy environment. 4. Your comment on breakfast is indeed worrisome and I do apologise that the team wasnt on top of their high class service. Obviously our breakfast needs to be as good and as sumptuous for every guests we host and regardless what time they arrive. That indeed isnt our style and will be taken up with management. 5. Was our service really that lousy as your report upon leaving our lodge reads very different. Yes, I received your report from management and am very happy that I have a chance to respond here on Trip Advisor. We did reach out to your agent at Big Cat Adventures to apologise and wanted to clarify however, to date, we have not received any reply from them. I am very sorry that you will not return to Hatari Lodge and bid an old friend your final goodbye. That’s a choice you want to take. If you have a change of heart and do return, you are welcomed with open arms and a very special treat. Thats what I can offer hoping that the above explanations regarding your complaints and question did answer most of your ill feelings towards our lodge. We will change whats in our power but we will continue to support and protect our National Park as well as the supply chain of good, free and fair food being served to your table. Best regards Marlies Gabriel, owner of Hatari Lodge.

We hardly came ever across a worse lodge managment than the one we had at Hatari Lodge. The two managers do not recognice their guests, do focus on their own interests, neglect the presence of their guests. Even after rising this topic nothing really changed. (Frequent management changes at the lodge seems to be constant). Worst of all is that the owners (Jorg and Marlies Gabriel) live right next door and seem not to care at all. Their forcus seems to be on their Momella foundation and the lodge/ guests are just there to earn a living.
The food at the lodge is mediocre at best and sometimes outright bad.
The lodge itself is fully foscusing on the heritage of the movie "Hatari" and German actor Hardy Kruger who once owned this place. But do not be mislead the Lodge is the old Hardy Kruger home and you will stay in the former staff rooms. The lodge Hardy Kruger owned is the the nearby Momella Lodge.
The lodge itself is a reminisence of the sixites which not necessarily is the design you might like to have in an African lodge.
The bar is an inhospitable place as it is fully packed with non bar related things. Drinks have to be paid in cash at the end of your stay. Why the lodge does not except any credit cards remains a mistery as you even can pay your entry fees at nearby Arusha NP entrance gate with VISA.
I would not recommend this lodge to anyone and should you not be capable speaking German it will most likely be a nightmare as most guests at the lodge are German hardly speaking any English.
Should you be interested in Arusha NP find another lodge.

Response from Donyo, Owner at Hatari Lodge
Responded Feb 22, 2011
Dear our valued guests, Thank you very much for your constructive feedback. First of all, we hope that you enjoyed the rest of your 2-week-holiday and had a good trip back home. It is very unfortunate, that you didn’t like the atmosphere and management at Hatari Lodge. As per our discussion here in the lodge, we can only say again that we are very sorry that you felt neglected. This has never been our intention, neither the management’s nor the owners’. Marlies and Joerg Gabriel as the directors of a lodge, a camp, a tour operator (which you chose in order to explore Tanzania) and the MomellaFoundation are indeed extremely busy fulfilling their various obligations and regret the fact that therefore they are unable to mix with their guests more often. This is the reason why they employed a very loyal and professional team. Nonetheless the owners are surprised why the chance to talk to them in private was not used as they joined at the dinner table and even during afternoon teas. We are aware, that the lodge has a unique style and is therefore very special and different. In our lodge design we have focused on a fresh breeze of African colors, textiles and patterns with a touch of the 60ties and 70ties. We always recommend our clients to have a look at our homepage or the itinerary created especially for their trip. There, they can see the rooms as well as the bar of Hatari Lodge in detail. They are presented exactly as they are. The drinks at the bar are not included in our full board rate, which is stated in the general information of Hatari Lodge, sent to you on October 6th 2010, paragraph ‘Bar & Drinks’. Apart from this, we do not understand flowers as ‘non bar related things’ – we call these items ‘decoration’, but this is again a question of taste. The VISA payment is indeed a rather annoying issue, even for us, and we are working on implementing a credit card system very soon. We are still looking for the best solution, as the internet connection here is very bad and we just don’t want the same struggle the National Park has. They have 5 tele-connectors and hardly even one of them is working. Our Menu consists of international specialties, cooked by our Tanzanian chef and his team. Our guests do enjoy our food. We always ask our guests about possible preferences or problems such as allergies regarding their meals upon arrival, and our kitchen, in addition, is always happy to adjust to their wishes. Our clientele is international. We therefore have a host who can communicate in eleven languages. Since the heritage and history of Hatari Lodge are particularly famous in Germany due to the movie “Hatari” from the early 1960ies, starring Hardy Krueger and John Wayne, we do have many German guests though. When you told us during your stay that you felt neglected by our management we tried to compensate for your feeling by upgrading your accommodation with us and giving you an extra-night in our exclusive Shu’mata Camp. We regret that this effort did not suffice to show you how seriously we took your complaint. With best regards, The Management and Direction of Hatari Lodge.

My family and I stayed at the Hatari Lodge located at the edge of Arusha National Park during the first week of August 2011. The Hatari Lodge was the last place we stayed after spending two weeks in Tanzania at different parks. We enjoyed our stay at the Hatari Lodge very much.
The ecosystems in the Arusha National Park are very different than other parks we stayed at in Tanzania. The lodge sits at the foot of Mount Meru, a volcano that is surrounded by rain forests, volcanic craters and lakes. It is a beautiful place and very peaceful. We enjoyed seeing the forests, mountains and habitats different than we experienced at other parks. We saw flocks of flamingos in the park lakes, volcanic craters with herds of Cape buffalo, different species of monkeys including beautiful black and white colobus monkeys and herds of giraffes. There were giraffes all around the grounds of the lodge. We had four giraffes walk past our room one morning which was a treat especially for our children. We counted forty-seven giraffes in one day. The view of Mount Kilimanjaro from the lodge was spectacular.
We enjoyed the lodge very much. The management was very attentive, even seeing us off at 4:00 a.m. to catch our early morning flight, going beyond the call of duty. Each evening a fire was made in our bedrooms’ fireplaces and hot water bottles were placed at the foot of the beds. We went on a day drive to the Ngurdoto Crater and a nice lunch in picnic tins was provided unlike the lunch boxes provided at some lodges. The food was good and we enjoyed the lodge décor which was fun and tastefully done including local arts and crafts. The lodge was well maintained and very clean. The owners joined guests and management for dinner one evening and were delightful.
All in all we had a very peaceful and enjoyable time at the Hatari Lodge. Our son who loves giraffe was especially pleased with the herds of giraffe we saw.
