I stayed with my family in mid-December for a week, fortunate enough to be in one of the two over-water family villas (definitely worth the upgrade). Not having used an all-inclusive resort before, we were not sure what to expect - would we find endless dishes of mediocre food and drunken fellow guests taking advantage of free booze? Actually, nothing like that at all. The food was excellent, both in the over-water restaurant (only for guests in the over-water villas) and in the main restaurant, with its daily grilled fish, Maldivian curry, top-notch pastas and warm local puddings. The service was relaxed, natural and always friendly and again, well ahead of what we had expected. The island is very small (no getting away from that) and there's no gym or pool, but the watersports centre is incredibly helpful, with paddle boards, windsurfing, water-skiing and snorkels and the house reef is astonishingly good, with a couple of channels where you see an array of fish and other sea life. The highlight for my sons was seeing a mantis shrimp (a small shrimp with a punch strong enough to break glass), their first in the wild, but there were also reef sharks, rays, and loads of reef fish. In low tide you didn't even have to swim - you could just go along the channel on hands and knees and marvel. Not everything was perfect - information on check-out needed to be chased up, and the bread at breakfast was all too sweet - but these are minor quibbles on what was a lovely trip.

I will be completely honest in this review. And this is my last day in the hotel and I have been in several other hotels in Maldives before, so not first timer. Let’s start with negatives: - First of all the hotel isn’t 5 star and can max get 4 if even so. - Rooms are in a bad shape, stained, worn off. I stayed in B31 which is in absolutely bad shape. On top of that there is a generator room next to it and it’s always so noisy, forget about relaxing or good night sleep. Also rooms are pretty small. - The island is too small. It brings many disadvantages such as being very close to staff quarter (because it’s always noisy), can’t walk around, everything is too compressed. - There isn’t much excursions or activities and it gets boring. Excursions are so very expensive. - Food is mediocre and it repeats itself generally. - There is no Wi-Fi or TV in the rooms. Positives: - The house reef in this island is very good. Snorkeling is so much fun due to the variety of fish and alive corals. It’s amazing and one of the best in terms of marine life. - Staff is so friendly and I cannot thank them enough. From bar to restaurant, from water sport center to reception, everyone is so good. Especially Nishan at water sport center, he is such a great person. Aslam ( I hope I typed it correctly) in the restaurant, the guys in the bar are always so nice and friendly. - House keeping works well and nicely organized (Thanks Shaamil). - All inclusive works well. You can get variety of snacks and nice drinks from the bar. As a summary, all Maldivian islands are naturally a paradise and the hotels make the experience good or bad. In this case, I gave my point according to the hotel and it’s facilities. Unfortunately room shapes are something cannot be forgiven. If you don’t mind noisy environment or bad rooms, you can absolutely visit for house reef. Thanks for reading.

DearAliokm, first of all we would like to thank you for choosing Athuruga for your stay in Maldives, and for sharing your experience. We are reading your positive & negative comments with concern, with all our consideration. Regarding TV in room, it's since ever a choice of not having them, in order to experience the amazing nature and peaceful environment that Maldives can bring to us. Among the inventory of our room, we have to offer the simplicity of our Beach Villas, or larger & conformable Junior Suite on our beach side, or the luxurious Overwater Villa where to relish our amazing lagoon. Once again many thanks for staying with us, and we hope to welcome you back in Diamonds Athuruga, maybe in a different type of room to better taste the beauty of Maldives.

Where do I even begin. From the moment we touched down at the seaplane drop off, we were greeted by Silvia and Krzysz. From there it was a short boat ride to the hotel, some quick formalities and into your room. We stayed at water villa 21, due to its close proximity to the channel for snorkeling. We also found that the sightings of shark, rays and turtle from our water villa was excellent. The water villas are amazing, being super spacious and tastefully furnished and decorated. The deck was simply sublime, with a choice of a 6 seater dining table, 2 sun loungers and 2 couches. You can take your pick of where you'd like to relax for the day! We highly recommend breakfast on the deck in the mornings. Our water villa assistant was Hassan (aka Jerry). He took good care of us, ensuring we always had enough towels, and cleaning according to our schedule. Over 2 evenings we returned to the room early, he profusely apologized for coming too late ( quite frankly we were early, and our room was fine, so there was no need for a 2nd clean). He epitomized the friendly nature of the Maldivian people. It's amazing to see how much care he put into ensuring the room was to our satisfaction, working through the sweltering heat! Thank you immensely Hassan! My only issues with the water villa was the lack thereof of a bathtub, however the shower entry from the deck with a dual shower wasn't a bad supplement. In addition, it would have been nice to have had a TV, but this also was a good thing as it kept us out of the room and socializing more often. I also recommend buying a sim card at the airport if you require wifi for work or other purposes. The wifi is far from ideal, but then again, keeps you off your phone. This can become frustrating when you need to do some work or stream. The wifi is the same at the bar and reception, with no wifi available in the beach villas. As we stayed in a water villa, we were allowed access to the water villa restaurant for meals. This is an a la carte restaurant, with more fine dining options. We personally preferred the buffet, with Chef Titu and Chef Abdul Moti ensuring our plates were always full! Both Chefs were always first to greet us, with Chef Titu on the grill outside, and Chef Abdul at the pizza station just as you enter the buffet area. We found food options to be vast, with the menu varying on most days. However it did become monotonous after a while. I don't think this is any fault on the resort, as there is only so much that can be provided at meal times. Drinks are served at the overwater restaurant bar from 6-10pm. We highly recommend this, as the sunset views are just insane! Samira is the barman. He's also a great photographer!😁 The beach bar, just beside the buffet restaurant is great as well, always beaming with people throughout the day. On certain evenings, there is also Karaoke for all to participate in. The karaoke is fun, with Krzysz, Silvia, Klaudia and Viktor getting involved in the fun, and encouraging guests to join in. Ranju and 2 other barmen run this bar throughout the day, and they are excellent! (Apologies I cannot recall the other barmens names). There are also some games which can be played at the beach bar. The snorkeling at the resort was great! Hussein and Viktor are both great, and patient. Don't be too alarmed if you're not a great swimmer or still finding your way snorkeling. They will assist you, or even carry you along with the float tube. I struggled on my first day, and after some help from Viktor and a bit of practice, I was going unassisted! They also have life jackets for those who will need. Snorkeling gear ( fins, snorkel and mask) are provided to you free to use for the period of your stay. There is a free guided snorkel of the house reef daily, which can get quite fun. The house reef is in good shape, as good as can be after the El Nino effect on the reefs globally. There are a healthy amount of fish all along the reef, with sightings of black tip reef shark, eagle rays, sting rays, needle fish, turtle, scorpion fish, sweet lips, batfish, Jack fish, moray eel, tang fish, clams etc. As we were about to depart the boat to leave the resort, we were amazed at the sighting of a mating pair of eagle rays in the shallows, insane! There are tons of nurse shark which gather at the end of the Pier every evening (we counted about 15 on one occasion). Ask reception for a torch if you'd like to see these amazing creatures in the evening, as it is quite dark at the Pier. We did a few excursions during our stay. We had done sunset fishing, which was okay. It wasn't a particularly great afternoon for fishing, with only a few fish caught all around. Still a great experience. We had also done a 4 hour private Dhoni cruise with another couple and family, where we did the turtle reef, Kalu Giri reef, and sandbank excursion. The Kalu Giri reef snorkel and sandbank excursions are highly recommended, with the turtle reef also recommended if you're not lucky enough to see turtle at the Diamonds Athuruga house reef. I had also done the whale shark excursion. I cannot recommend this excursion enough. Sightings are very dependant on your luck, we were however blessed with 2 sightings on the day, one in deeper waters, and another in shallower waters and up close. I recommend everyone visiting to do this excursion, as it is simply magnificent to see these majestic creatures. Hussein was our guide, and he was amazing, getting us into the water quickly and strategically positioned to observe these fish. This was definitely one of my highlights, and a once in a lifetime experience. The site to get to whale shark is approx an hour out by speedboat, with the excursion lasting approx 3.5-4 hrs. I must specifically commend Silvia on her customer service and care throughout our stay, ensuring we were always happy and satisfied with everything. We decided to extend for an additional 2 nights, and Silvia ensured we got the best available rate, and ensured our transfers were changed appropriately. She also ensured we had a room to use for the day on the say of checkout, due to our flight being in the evening. We had thought they'd move us to a beach villa, but she ensured we got a water villa to use. She is a gem to the resort, and we cannot thank her enough! I would also like to commend Krzysz on his management of the resort. On one evening there were some rowdy guests, and while it took a little longer than expected to get Krzysz involved, he eventually resolved the issue, calling the authorities to remove these guests accordingly. We had been to the Maldives once before, and both experiences were vastly different. The resort was fairly busy, and everyone friendly. This created a great social environment. In summary, the major perks of the resort are the huge water villas, free guided house reef snorkels, free snorkel equipment and great house reef. We feel as though we have made lifelong friends with those at the resort, from staff to guests. Thank you for the amazing time. And we hope to someday return. Muaaz & Halima
