Detailed Reviews
Hotel's Favorite
Overall - A once in a lifetime opportunity not to be missed. We loved every second and would love to go back however as you will already know, it’s not cheap! Despite the cost, it’s worth every penny. If you are looking for paradise without the pretentiousness of other resorts then look here. If you want to be left alone for your holiday with no entertainment or people interaction then maybe look elsewhere. If you want a mixture of the both, RIU Palace may be an option. I’ll break it down into sections which may help you decide on whether RIU Atoll is for you.
The journey - A flight to Male. We were met by a RIU staff member when leaving the arrivals who ushered us to a terminal about 2 minutes walk away and checked in again. This was for a domestic flight which was around 30 minutes later. The flight took around 30 minutes. We collected our cases and were ushered onto a minibus and driven for about 5 minutes to the other side of the island where we were met by a boat. The boat took around 15 minutes and we were at RIU. Overall it seemed like a logistical nightmare but was expertly dealt with throughout with no worries for the guests.
Atmosphere - There was a big turnover of guests throughout. I would say the biggest proportion come from Russia. We met people from Italy, France, Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, Spain, Poland, Austria, Germany and the USA.
Weather - People are knocking stars off the hotel because of the weather. Believe it or not, the hotel don’t control the weather. The Maldives is a group of TROPICAL islands. If you want blistering sun all day, you need to go to a different country. The term tropical is interchangeable weather where it’ll be blistering sun and then 10 minutes later it’ll be ferocious rain. It will rain on your holiday, probably at some point every day. Each room is provided with an umbrella, says it all about the weather! One thing we did was take light kagools which was a God send. The temperature always remains the same though, day and night, at least 30 degrees.
Room - We booked an overwater bungalow and what a great choice that was. Our room (3000) was the first on the right and where the tide headed towards. We got all of the sea life (sharks, rays etc) passing under us, it was amazing to see. The steps into the sea are amazing and the sand underneath is soft and clean. There is a day bed on the balcony and two chairs with a coffee table. The room itself was large with 2 double beds pushed together, a sofa, fully stocked mini bar (beer, soft drinks which are all branded and water) and also spirits (Smirnoff, gin, whisky, captain Morgan’s). There was a kettle with sacheted coffee and tea. Hairdryer, his and hers sinks, large walk in shower, separate toilet, full length mirror, Tv, bath robes, life jackets, a safe. The cleaner does an excellent job and left a different towel art on the bed everyday. On my partners birthday he left a message of ‘Happy 30th Birthday’ made out of palm leaves on the bed.
Food - There are three restaurants. The main buffet restaurant is akin to other all inclusive resorts. The quality of the food is the best I’ve had from any buffet restaurant however at times can become a bit repetitive. That being said, there is a large selection on offer so you could choose to have Chinese one night, Indian the next but as a Brit, we just shove everything onto one plate! There was Chinese, Indian, Italian, fresh meats, fresh fish, entrees, desserts etc. My partner made a good point and said that if you went to a normal restaurant and ordered any of the dishes on offer at this buffet, you would be happy with the food. The quality of it is good. The Italian restaurant was ok, the mains were nice but again the starters and desserts come from a buffet. The chairs were pretty uncomfortable in there. The steak restaurant however was incredible. If that was in London, you would be paying over £100 for each steak. The quality of meat was exceptional. There are ‘leftovers’ available in the sports bar with a microwave should you get hungry later in the night. We had a birthday to celebrate whilst out there and they brought a lovely little chocolate cake out with a candle and sang!
The sea - The beaches are immaculate white sand. The sea is perfect light blue. Snorkelling was really good with small coral reefs dotted around and also the large house reef. We saw sharks, rays and a multitude of different colours and types of fish. We took snorkels with us however they do rent snorkels out if needed. Paddle boarding, kayaking, pedalos are all included in the all-inclusive package however if the winds strong they understandably don’t allow people to utilise them. There are also jet skis, scuba diving etc for an extra cost. The water is so clear, I saw a moving shadow around 100 metres away so decided to go out and investigate to find a 5ft sting Ray feeding.
Staff - The staff are fantastic and all work hard. They just want to please the guests and rarely will you have an empty glass with the servers topping you up at all times. In the restaurant there was Sam and Nippi who were great, as were the others. The bar staff are all friendly, at all bars, and seem to remember your drink orders when you turn up! I didn’t ever feel that tips were expected by the staff however we did give a couple of dollars to staff at points throughout the holiday. The staff are from all over with many from Maldives, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, Mauritius and Indonesia.
Entertainment - The daytime entertainment staff are around all day and night. The daytime activities take place around the pool. Volleyball, aqua aerobics, bingo etc. If this isn’t your thing then they aren’t pushy but there are plenty of quiet spots on the island. There is a ‘sunset DJ’ most days on the beach playing chilled house music. There is a resident band who are all very talented, there is a variety of different nights from 80’s/90’s music right through to quite deep house music! House music with a saxophonist on the beach at night was amazing.
Bars - The pool bar is open 10am til 8pm. It has a swim up bar with stools and also can be used from under a cover. They serve alcohol, soft drinks, coffee etc. The entertainment bar is open from 6pm til midnight and depending on the entertainment, it’s table service or you go up to the bar. On the party nights they set up a second bar to allow quicker service. The sports bar is open 24/7. My only negative of the holiday was the sports bar, I feel it could be so much better. No matter what time of the day/night, the lights are really bright. They just need to dim the lights, play some music and have comfier seating, maybe even sofas in there.
Wildlife - I’ve mentioned the marine life however it’s worth mentioning the small number of land wildlife. There are bats which fly around in the daytime. Some are the size of a cat, they are huge. There are a lot of chameleons which blend into the surroundings or even the path! There are flightless little birds which are quite confident and will come up to you. In terms of insects, we never really saw any and certainly didn’t get any in our room!
Other stuff - There is a spa which we didn’t try. The gym looks well equipped. There is a kids club but we didn’t see it open. There is a small shop open 9am til 9pm which sells everything from clothes to suncream, souvenirs to British chocolate. It’s very pricey however. (£30 for suncream). There is a doctor on site.
Verdict - We loved every minute of it. It was worth every penny! Would we return? We definitely would although unlikely due to the cost! Who knows though!

Why do trippers go on holiday and are so critically reflective. Surely the reason you choose to visit the Maldives is to enjoy yourself and have a wonderful experience and this is what the Rui provides.
The vast majority of the reviews are very positive and this is a credit to the management and staff of the island. The staff are so helpful and obliging in providing hospitality of the standard you come to expect on an island in the middle of the Indian Ocean.
We have previously visited the Maldives staying on Kuredoo and Laguna Island. Both these islands provided us we a memorable holiday for many different reasons. With the Rui being the first resort to be built of concrete the buildings do look a little “out of place” Compared to the wooden structures more commonly seen. However if you like a very modern straight line property tastefully built wherever possible hidden by the vegetation this is the one for you.
We stayed in the Water Suites which are idyllic although they do look a little unusual. White concrete blocks in the reef. One recommendation we would make is to try and be allocated a room on the west coast as the wind blowing across the atoll can be breezing to say the least.
Yes of course if you are determined to find fault with negative comments and subjective criticisms that’s perfectly acceptable.
Our advice would be to book to stay at the Rui. For a Maldivian Island it provides everything you could possibly wish for taking into account the price you pay for an all inclusive experience.

We stayed here between February 3rd and 17th having booked it before the hotel had even opened, so it was going to be a bit of a gamble.
Firstly, the staff here were excellent, it really does have to be mentioned that all levels of staff were polite, friendly, helpful and acknowledged you when passing or serving you. From Riu's senior staff through to the gardeners and behind the scenes staff, all were very nice IMO.
We've never been to the Maldives before so had no idea what to expect, other than no TUI rep. However when we arrived at Male Airport, the RIU rep made themselves know and sorted onward flight transfer, no issues or drama at all. We handed our cases over for check-in and see them only when we arrived to our hotel room, everything was very smooth.
The hotel itself is only about 7 months old so is pretty new, that said they had staff looking after all aspects of the facilities to ensure it stayed like it. We had a small issue with our safe and shower and these were sorted in less than 15 minutes each time. Shared areas such as bars, toilets etc were well cared for and very clean...just a shame some of the guests couldn't do their bit to keep the beach clean and not leave empty bottles etc. We were up fairly early each morning and even at 7am they had staff picking litter washed up on the beaches etc.
Our room (1501) was a standard room with beach access and was plenty big enough, good storage space and very good bathrooms (shower only). Towels changed daily if needed, beach/pool towels also left fresh each day and bed linen changed whenever you left the card on the bed. The mini bar was restocked each afternoon and plenty of bottled water left in addition.
Food at the three restaurants was very good indeed. We had the pleasure of being there for Valentines Day and they really went to town in the main restaurant with incredible food displays and decorations. The head chef was usually there each day ensuring everything was ok and there to help should special needs be required, again no issues for them to sort. We found the food in the main buffet restaurant very good quality with fresh meat and fish cooked infront of you as needed. The Italian and Steak House needed to be booked in advance, although some guests didnt grasp this concept at times, it was definately worth a visit.
It's easy to go on with the positive time we had but the text will run out!! All in all, thoroughly recommended.

We stayed here in January 2022, our first Maldives experience and one of many Riu resorts we have stayed in across the world. We choose Riu Atoll because we are familiar with the Riu concept and have never been left disappointed.
The location and setting is simply stunning, either approaching reception by seaplane or boat (we did both). It does take your breath away and has that wow factor as you arrive. However, I assume any Maldives location would do just that.
The plus factors of this resort are:
Great customer service (Singhe on the bar was fantastic and attended to our needs whether in the pool bar or during the evening).
Rooms are well appointed and the service was exemplary (Nishwaau serviced our room daily, extremely clean and his attention to detail was very impressive, including his towel art on the bed!).
The buffet was very good with plenty of variety and different dishes to choose from. The chefs and waiting on staff do a great job.
Watersports were always available to use including free paddle boards and sea kayaks. We also took out a jetski for a 1hr trip which costs US150 or US195 for two people. Thoroughly recommended as this is the only way to go off the island during the current pandemic.
Weather was incredible with temps 31c - 34c everyday and no rain whatsoever.
The areas for improvement are as follows (I did pass feedback to the General Manager who was very approachable and visible) Please note this did not detract from a great holiday, but it did stop me awarding 5 stars review on Trip Advisor.
Evening entertainment is very poor. We are used to Riu provided outstanding evening entertainment but here at the Riu Atoll it left us underwhelmed. A cinema night on two Sunday evenings we were there in the main outside area from 9pm to 11pm did not satisfy the vast majority of guests. I understand COVID restrictions tone down what can be offered but this area needs to be improved for the guests.
Lack of air conditioning in the main restaurant is a problem. I understand the concept of the beach restaurant but with the Maldives heat people want to escape the heat during the day and lunchtime could be unbearable for both staff and guests. You can see staff and management sweating through their clothes during service.
The sunshine pool has a sign that says no children, however, this was not controlled and lot's of families were using this pool with the younger children and at times inflatables too.
The above three points are just observations to improve the guests experience and did not stop us having a fantastic holiday.
I would definitely recommend the Riu Atoll but if returning to the Maldives I would probably choose another resort.

+1
I have travelled to Riu Atoll on a solo visit, you could say I'm a sucker for snorkeling and beautiful clean water.
I have travelled to many countries and stayed at over 28 Riu hotels around the world, they are always superb and this hotel in no exception.
1. The arrival.
Check in process was quick but this was one area a slight improvement is needed, I was not shown where any facilities were nor given a map, the lady basically pointed and said your room is that way, this was a real shame and the only real negative of the whole visit.
2. The Room.
Beautiful, new and excellently decorated, the beds and pillows are super comfy, the shower could do with a touch more pressure but more than adequate. I paid extra for a beech room on the ground floor and this was certainly worth the small amount extra, slide the door open and the sand and water is right there! The room has a mini bar filled up each day by very pleasant and cheerful staff.
3. The food.
I have only used the buffet as I feel a little embarrassed as a solo using the reservation only booking, silly I know but that's just me!
The food is fantastic, as a fussy eater I had plenty of choice, always well cooked and hot, the puddings are amazing!
4. The beach.
This is what I came for, I'm addicted to Beautiful water for snorkeling and trust me you will not be disappointed, the whole place is so well maintained, the variety of fish including basking sharks was outstanding!
The beach is very well maintained and not once did I see any seaweed, the staff work so hard in the blazing sun to keep it looking like paradise.
5. Conclusion.
Just book the holiday, you will not return home disappointed, I still have a whole week left and birthday on the 16th October and could not think of a better place to spend it, with Beautiful surrounding and absolutely lovely people, I have traveled the world but this has to be one of my most favourite places.

Starting with a bit of a negative after a very long trip 3 planes and a boat we arrived at the reception which was a quick check in process. We was then left on our own to find our room which was a good 15 minute walk from the reception as our room was in block 24 which is the very end of the island. A buggy should have been provided to take you to the room. I must say though the experience at Male airport was amazing we was met by a Riu rep who made the transfer to the domestic flight seamless and a very pleasant experience. We was escorted to a waiting area provided with drinks and a snack and then he came back to take us to the domestic terminal.
The rooms are very spacious and clean with a wonderful sea view loads of hanging space as well. A good stocked mini bar which gets refilled on a daily basis with whatever you like. The Becks beer in the mini bar is not very nice though.
Plenty of sunbeds available whatever time of day you arrive at the pool did not struggle once to get a bed which is great as you should never have to get up early morning just to get one. The pool area is very clean and plenty of pool towels that you can change throughout the day.
All the staff at the hotel are amazing they work such long hours but they are always smiling and can’t do enough for you. Isuru who works in the main bar of an evening was excellent he certainly kept the drinks flowing and made me a wonderful Gin with loads of fruit in it also I would like to mention Kumara who makes the best expresso martini I have ever tasted. In the pool bar you had Pashindu, Veejay Singh.
Onto the food now. I have read reviews where people have said the food gets very repetitive I wonder what these people eat at home as you had so much choice. Wen (Boleee) is a credit to your team he is just wonderful his food is amazing and he is such a lovely person always smiling and he is so happy. We visited the steak house twice and both times had a wonderful meal.
The entertainment team are really good they have a varied programme throughout the day and you are not forced to do anything you don’t want to do. They are happy to have a chat with you and are generally interested in you. The pool party on a Saturday is excellent the DJ on the roof of the pool bar and the party games. They also do a White party on a Thursday which is great fun everyone gets involved face painting is done by the girls from RuiLand. On our 2nd Thursday we had a guest DJ from Poland he was amazing.
The 24 hour Sports bar is very noisy but great for a late night drink. They have snacks but they are very limited you can just go and help yourself to these but I did see people just pick them up with their hands so I never touched them. I think it would be much better if the staff served them to you.
Another good thing about Rui is you are AI until you leave the island on some other AI holiday’s they will no longer serve you after mid-day.
Leaving was just as well organised being escorted to both the local and Male terminals.
A great 2 weeks and would return.

The Riu Atoll is a scenic and incredible island from start to finish. Service is great when dining and drinking. Especially with Chamod and Rumesh on the night shift making creative cocktails to suit everyone’s appetite.
From the beach to the water villas, cleanliness is 100%. There’s lots to do whether complimentary or chargeable with the water sports and events from live music to karaoke kept safe even during COVID times.
My only ask, the entire island must become 5* rather than split into two. Minimal things such as room service, premium wines, all restaurants being available to everyone and if dining in a restaurant it must be serviced rather than a starter buffet. Having stayed at the Lux* resort previously, these are the minimal things that make a difference - which people appreciate and expect when paying a premium cost. One thing is a MUST, the 24 hour snack bar must be improved, this is the only things that comes to mind that is barely a 3* service.
I must say, the service is impeccable throughout and all staff especially ( Chamod and Rumesh) would bend over backwards to assist to your needs.
If you have children/ families there’s a lot for kids to do also. I would recommend tremendously.

An absolutely fantastic hotel staff and management are so friendly and approachable
The rooms are spacious clean and very well maintained. It was nice to see the pool being water tested on a daily basis it was also very well maintained.
The food was excellent and massive choice from starters mains and deserts all presented beautifully. The gardens are well-kept surprisingly given the heat. It was also nice to see the directors of the hotel constantly walking around checking everything is in order and corresponding with guest The beaches are immaculate powder white so nice.
There seems to be nothing to staff and management will not do to make your holiday fantastic which it was

We were welcome straight away at the airport by Riu staff. All the travel until the hotel was great and we felt supported at all time.
Arriving at the hotel was amazing and we were welcome with a drink and a wet that were both welcome.
We booked a junior suite over the sea; the room really exceeded our expectations. It was comfortable and spacious. With the change of going to the sea directly from the balcony we spent most of the days in the room. Housekeeping was great and cleaned the room while we were in the balcony or at the sea.
We have stayed in some all-inclusive resorts, and this one had one of the best foods on the buffet restaurant. The waiters were always amazing cleaning everything and always with a smile during our meals. The quality and variety were good, and we had plenty of choices every day.
The beach was always clean and the water amazing.
The bars were great with a good choice of drinks.
We visit the Italian restaurant and it was good. Great to have a dinner where you order, and you are served.
We were disappointed with the steakhouse and that was our last dinner, the food took a long time to be served to everyone and the quality wasn’t the best.
All the transfers went well and on time and we felt supported all the time.
We would like to thank all the staff that were great to help us enjoy our stay even more.
If we can I’m sure we will return to this paradise.

My wife and I went to Rui Atoll from 13th - 20th October for our 30th Wedding Anniversary and found the location to be great, with room all good and staff very friendly. Food was good but got a bit boring towards the end of Holiday. To book a restaurant you needed to download an App and when I finally managed this I could not book a table so asked reception to do this for but was refused as needed to be done via the App. The reason I have put an average rating is because of the amount of time it takes to get there and some small things which could have been done but were not offered, we flew business class so arrived at Male airport refreshed and ready for our holiday. It was then we found out that we needed to catch a smaller plane 35min flight to another island and then a 15min boat ride. Upon arrival the check was not too bad and was told we need to visit the Doc a day before we leave and given our key. We then had to walk about a mile to our room. I found this a bit much and if I arrive on at luxury hotel I expect to be shown to my room and offered the golf cart ride. Not told this was possible. Travellers be aware that some of the rooms are about a mile from main pool and restaurant so if your mobility is not good then this holiday is not for you. We walked 3km every day to get Brekkie, lunch and dinner. Of course you can request nearer villa's but this is not guaranteed. The water villa's would be a better option but coat $130- £140 per night. As expected in the Maldives the sea was lovely and warm and scenery great but the thought of our return journey was on my mind all the time. After visiting the doc you get a all clear form which you sign and then have to go onto the Maldives gov website to fill out a Departure Health Declaration form which we battled to do on my iPad so wife went to reception to get it done. You have paperwork and Apps coming out your *** Please also note you need to fill out the 2 day PCR Test Location form and book a test either before you leave or whilst on holiday as you cannot board without it which we found out at he airport and battled to download and fill Out. Many thanks to a couple who took the time to help us, was very stressful. NOTE:- please take the time to check you onward journey's in the Maldives as this can be very tiresome. No special things were arranged for our anniversary and considering I took my wife to Maldives for our 13th Anniversary and now 30th our firat trip was far better. Would I return to this hotel....no as have experienced far better service, food and entertainment elsewhere. PS small tip...please note the cylinder with white tissues coming out the top in business class toilet are not wet wipes but are very strong toilet seat wipes which cause some considerable damage and discomfort to the private part ( took a week to heal)

Dear SJF66, Thank you for choosing us to celebrate your anniversary and for sharing your review. We are happy to hear the hotel´s great location, our staff members professional services and your room´s comfort was to your liking; however, it is disappointing to learn that you did not fully enjoy our resort. We always want our guests to have a lovely and relaxing time and it is our policy to ensure that we exceed our guests’ expectations. Sadly, we were unable to do the same for you. You may rest assured all your comments had been cascaded to the responsible department for a proper follow up with the purpose of improving the hotel and service we give our guests. We hope you will decide to give us the opportunity to welcome you soon again and prove that your unsatisfactory stay was an exception! With best regards, Hotel Riu Atoll Online Reputation Manager

Londontraveller008 asked a question Sep 2024
London, United Kingdom683 contributions166 helpful votesHi there,
Just wondering....when you arrive at Male, how long is it before you get the domestic flight and are you booked/ guaranteed a seat on the next one departing?
I notice on the domestic schedule that they only have 4 flights a day 12.00, 14.30, 17.45 and 23.30 out of Male, so if you land at 8am for example, do you automatically get booked on the 12.00 flight or could you be waiting 4- 6 hours for the next one?
Thank you for any replies
I have stayed at Hotel Riu Atoll twice and both times they booked me on the flight closest to my arrival time in Malé. As I arrived early the first time, they let me have a complimentary breakfast at the Secret Recipes restaurant, which is opposite the domestic terminal at Malé airport (with free Wi-Fi).
The staff will be with you from the time you leave baggage claim until you board your domestic flight.
I wrote to transfer service of the Hotel for details of my domestic flight and they replied very quickly.
Completely satisfied with the transfer service.
At the Sports Bar, there are usually various items (depending on the day): burgers, sandwiches, vegetables (tomato, cucumber, onion...), pastries and fruit. There are sauces (ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard...) and a microwave to heat the food. Great for a snack or lunch if you arrive late.
The Beef Steak House is only open some evenings and you have to book a table via the app (or at reception). We've been there: it's worth it!
I booked a return flight whilst staying at the resort in April and the price from memory was USD125 per person, so USD250 both ways. I’m sure if you contact the hotel direct they can arrange.
