Rancho Santana, set serenely in the Southwest Pacific offers a collection of distinctive seaside experiences. Though little more than two hours from Nicaragua's capital city of Managua by car, the property has grown into a quiet community that enjoys purity, authenticity, and a somehow romantically rustic elegance. Both residential and resort, "the ranch" boasts over 2,700 acres of majestic land along two miles of shoreline which include five unique beaches. And while this paradise is the perfect setting to do nothing at all but sunbathe and stargaze, its remarkable range of terrain, unique climate and soothing coastal breezes make it a coveted destination for the more active and adventurous traveler. Tucked between the open sea and the immense Lake Nicaragua, "the ranch" has the distinction of being one of the only isthmuses on the entire Pacific Ocean. This unique geographical phenomenon creates gentle tropical breezes, which when paired with year-round warm ocean waters make the beaches' surfing conditions some of the most coveted on the planet. With the early sunrise, "shredders" of all ages and origins take to the breaks of Las Cinco Playas de Rancho Santana, which include some of the world's most vertical waves, providing both visual drama as well as world-class surfing. Lookers-on walk the water's edge watching the surfers dance across the waves while just yards behind them fisherman bring in what will be the evening's fresh catch in the clubhouse's renowned restaurant, La Finca y el Mar.

This was my second trip to Rancho Santana in a year. The first trip was with a friend to go surfing, but I loved it so much I wanted to come back and bring my family so we went for Thanksgiving, and another family joined us as well.

Last trip I stayed in a room in The Inn. This time around, we opted for their 3bed/3bath "Residences," which I saw on the last trip, they are amazing. The other family booked a residence as well. They didn't assign us a Residence until we arrived, our family was given a second-floor, single-level unit in building 9. Our friends had a unit in building 8, second level, but theirs was a middle unit split into two floors. Both were nice; the single level felt far more spacious and full of light compared to the two-story unit, and the balcony was much more user-friendly. If we had a choice, or should I say when we go back next... I'd 100% request a ground-floor Residence. We were in and out of the unit to the beach and pool constantly, to get sunscreen or a beer, and having to walk around and up a flight of stairs every time got tiring. Not to mention having to walk through the entire unit wet and sandy each time. Being able to access the unit from the ground floor patio, which looks onto the beach, would have been so much easier. The views are just as good, if not better, from the ground floor as they are not obstructed by trees; you look directly out at the ocean. We didn't realize these Residences come with daily housekeeping service, which was a pleasant surprise, they were always so flexible about returning to clean at a more convenient time and left the place spotless.

We were there for 5 nights and left with a long list of things we never had time to do, that we had planned on initially. There is so much to do on the Ranch! We surfed every day both Playa Santana and down at Panga Drops. We hiked and sandboarded on Playa Duna which was a highlight. We had a few yoga and spa sessions. We took the E-Mountain bikes for a spin on their incredible new trail network. And then, because of Thanksgiving, they had endless fun things for the kids to do: family bingo night, kids spa sessions, gel blaster battles! We got in a quick game of pickleball (man it was hot, wish there was shade) and are ourselves silly. We wish we had tie to go for a sunset horseback ride and also to explore Playa Escondido.

I can't say enough good things about the staff here, from the concierge, the housekeeping, the shuttle drivers, the surf shop and all the restaurant and bar workers - everyone is so helpful, friendly and the level of English spoken by everyone is phenomenal.

We LOVEed getting Tacos at La Taqeria on Playa Los Perros..spent way too much of our vacation there drinking beer and eating tacos...We alternated between eating at La Boquita for fantastic wood fired pizzas and sushi and then dining at Finca y Mar. The food there is so good and not overly complicated or fussy - it's the perfect balance, and very reasonable.

We are not "resort" type of people and seldom travel to the same place twice - but Rancho Santana has won us over and we were already planning our return trip before we had left this time. We have a line of friends here in California that ae doing the same.

Nicaragua is so extremely safe we feel compared to what people think. We rented a car this time and drove from Managua , rather than using their transfer service. It was nice to have a vehicle to explore the ranch on our own. And they are almost done paving (with hand laid bricks!) a shortcut road that take about an hour off the drive from Managua - before you had to go down to Rivas and back up. It was a flat 2-hour drive from the airport and really easy; you never go through large populated towns with traffic - country roads and large roundabouts the entire way, easily navigated with Waze or Google maps.

Thanks again to everyone at Rancho - we will be back!

We were two families, kids ages 8 to 12. Flew from Maui to MGA without any hiccups. The paperwork and requirements may seem daunting, but as long as you follow Avianca's timeline, it's not difficult. We breezed through immigration in 20 minutes and flew right through customs and were greeted by our driver to the Ranch just outside of customs. I highly recommend hiring a driver to and from the airport. We saw so much of the country that way and both drivers were a wealth of information and excellent tour guides. We stopped for groceries on the way to the Ranch which was a great option to stock up on food and drinks. La Tienda, while a convenient option, does not have much to offer and is expensive. The fresh sourdough bread and fresh, giant burger patties are a must.
We ate at every outlet on site, and La Boquita was our favorite for sushi and sourdough pizza. All restaurants on property were outstanding and the service was above and beyond. We ate off property for lunch twice and each time we had to wait about 1.5 hours for our food, and it was not worth waiting for. When traveling with kids, waiting for food is not fun. The pool bar also offers a happy hour (not advertised) with $11 pitchers of margaritas. Great spot to watch the sunset.
We stayed in the residences which was convenient to the Inn, pool, and literally the best surf spot right in front of our place (Playa Santana). The surf was 3-5 ft everyday, and this was without a swell. Guests whom frequent the Ranch often said there's never not waves there.
Our room was spacious & very clean. The kitchen was very well equipped (coffee maker, filters, blender, microwave, toaster). They have large bottles of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and 5 gallon filtered water jugs in your room for drinking. Pull out sofa & linens too
Highly recommend sand boarding, but be warned, this requires a level of athleticism just to get there and back, let alone climbing the sand dune. Best shelling beach I've ever come across.
Make sure to visit every beach on property, they're all amazing and you'll often have the beach all to yourselves. You must rent a car to get around the property.
Horseback riding was amazing. The Spanish dancing the ranchers perform on their horses is a site to see. We did about 5 rides, & still there were so many more trails to take. Best ride was at sunset on the beach (not so hot in the late afternoon). The heat was extreme every day, even with the trade winds, but you can cool off in the pool

Our family of five (two teens and college junior) visited Rancho Santana for a week over the New Years break. I would echo all of the positive comments found on this site, as we found the entire experience well worth the effort of getting there. From the accommodations to the quality and variety of the restaurants to the professionalism of all the staff (including surf instructors) I have nothing but compliments to the entire organization. To package such a gorgeous location with such quality while maintaining a relaxed atmosphere is not an easy find these days, but RS has done just that. Many thanks to all who made our stay such a great time and memorable family vacation.

We chose Rancho as a surf destination for our family vacation with teenage boys. It ended up being perfect for surfing but so, so much more. Truth be told, I felt a little hesitant to travel to Nicaragua amidst security concerns, but before, during and after our stay at Rancho I never, ever felt at all unsafe. The transfer from Managua was seamless (albeit long)- count on 3 hours, but I never felt safety compromised and the Managua Airport was great.

Upon arrival the accommodations were luxurious, and the surroundings were gorgeous. The on site garden was amazing...and the farm to table food was so fresh and delicious. We spent a few hours each day hiking on the extensive trails that wind throughout the property (felt 100% safe- more so than in many place I have recently visited), did spa treatments, horseback riding, dune surfing and yoga. Each beach is more beautiful than the next- make sure to visit them all. It was an amazing trip and I can't wait to go back soon.

Fabulous location, magnificent facilities that are meticulously cared for. You will not find a more knowledgeable, helpful staff in every aspect of the operation . One meal was better than the last, not to mention the cocktails. Very fairly priced, i was amazed at the quality of the entire experience relative to what we paid, i was very pleasantly surprised. Awesome trip i will be back!

Rancho Santana is a beautiful, high end secluded resort on the pacific in Nicaragua l. It is very peaceful and quiet with lovely rooms, high-end amenities and delicious cuisine. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. There are several experiences on the property but you need a shuttle or car to drive there. There are 5 beaches but again, you need shuttle or car. The waves in Nicaragua are WILD! It is also breezy which is nice or can hurt a bit while you stand on the beach getting hit by sand! The sunsets were extraordinary! This isn’t the type of place you go for a crazy night life, but if you are looking for a wonderful, relaxing vacation with some adventures as well, then I definitely recommend it!

I’ve had an amazing time at Rancho Santana; unlike many other vacation destinations, Rancho’s mission is to dedicate itself to both ruggedness and luxury at the same time. They certainly met their mission: the accommodations (we stayed in a casita), the clubhouse, the beaches, and the restaurants were beautiful, while the vastness of the property, as well as their farm, the tienda, and the preserved wildlife, truly allowed for a ranch experience. The staff were all pleasant and dedicated to making sure you have the best experience, especially Alberto and Eric. The on-site activities, like the sunset hike, the mountain bike riding, and sand boarding, were amazing, and so were the off-site activities, like the volcano excursion. I hope I can come back one day.

I booked a week for my family over the holidays and we all loved Rancho Santana - there was something there for everyone. My 20 and 22 year old boys enjoyed the surfing at more than one beach as well as all the bars and restaurants on the ranch. The beaches were spectacular - the surf instructors were amazing, as was the horseback riding, yoga classes and beautiful spa. We stayed in one of the residences which I highly recommend. Beds, rooms and decor were all gorgeous and comfortable. Housekeeping daily. The food at la Tienda, the little shop on property was great to buy bkfst food, snacks and drinks for your villa.
It also felt safe to go off campus and explore the surrounding area if that's the kind of traveller you are.

I was originally booked for 6 nights and ended up staying 6 + weeks....that oughta tell you something !!
It is uber luxurious without being stuffy or pretentious; By far the finest property in Nicaragua.
amazing beaches, endless hiking trails, 3 pools to choose from, multiple restaurants and bars. Beautiful spa with a yoga palapa. I had two treatments at the spa that were both top notch. This is a working ranch, so there are plenty of beautiful horses to interact with.
Staff are friendly and attentive without being invasive. Think of this place more as a small community than a transient hotel.
Outside the gates of the resort, there are plenty of restaurants and beaches and a great community to get immersed in as well.
They have a Tienda (grocery store) on site, but if you want to spend a bit less and meet the locals, there a couple of places to grab some groceries just a few minutes away.
My only advice is; best to have your own car if you plan to explore. This is a big property and plenty to see outside of it as well
You will love this place.

Rancho Santana is heaven on earth! This was my third trip and it never disappoints. The service is 5 star. Everyone from Richardo and Katharine at the front desk to Barman who lead us on hikes, the staff is amazing. Manuel provided rides and Julia (the yoga instructor) were instrumental in making it an unforgettable experience. This place is a mix of ranch and 5 star resort (I use this. term loosely as it is more of a community than resort). The people are very casual and easy going. No one is pretentious! There are lots of activities from hiking to mountain biking to sand boarding down dunes. The staff notified me when the turtles were hatching and made sure to get me there to witness this amazing event. the restaurants are amazing and all reasonably priced. You have your choice of beaches each with their own personalities. This 3000 acre paradise is beyond pictures (hate to tell people about it just because it's natural beauty is relatively unspoiled and I'd love for it to stay this way!). They have their own sustainable herb and vegetable gardens and everything is made right there. The store on site (la tienda) carries everything from fresh fruit and fresh baked goods, to prepared meals to coffee and all the necessities at reasonable prices. They have a tennis court and people have brought their own paddles to play pickleball. The beauty of the place is beyond description and I love that you have your choice of accommodations from the Inn to casitas or Condo along with homes that you can rent. There are no big "hotels" or cheesy resort music. Our favorite beach is Los Parros where you will find the most amazing views and surf along with the best ever fish tacos or burritos and guac made with the largest avocados I've ever seen! The property is a bit difficult to get to, but the Ranch does an amazing job coordinating every transfer. If you are renting a house where you need to rent a vehicle, the hills on the property can be treacherous and you would need 4 wheel drive. We, however, were able to use the hotel's transportation within the property to get to wherever we needed to go! It was timely and convenient!
