Rancho Santana, set serenely in the Southwest Pacific offers a collection of distinctive seaside experiences. Though little more than two hours from Nicaragua's capital city of Managua by car, the property has grown into a quiet community that enjoys purity, authenticity, and a somehow romantically rustic elegance. Both residential and resort, "the ranch" boasts over 2,700 acres of majestic land along two miles of shoreline which include five unique beaches. And while this paradise is the perfect setting to do nothing at all but sunbathe and stargaze, its remarkable range of terrain, unique climate and soothing coastal breezes make it a coveted destination for the more active and adventurous traveler. Tucked between the open sea and the immense Lake Nicaragua, "the ranch" has the distinction of being one of the only isthmuses on the entire Pacific Ocean. This unique geographical phenomenon creates gentle tropical breezes, which when paired with year-round warm ocean waters make the beaches' surfing conditions some of the most coveted on the planet. With the early sunrise, "shredders" of all ages and origins take to the breaks of Las Cinco Playas de Rancho Santana, which include some of the world's most vertical waves, providing both visual drama as well as world-class surfing. Lookers-on walk the water's edge watching the surfers dance across the waves while just yards behind them fisherman bring in what will be the evening's fresh catch in the clubhouse's renowned restaurant, La Finca y el Mar.

I spent a total of 9 days at Rancho Santana in November. My daughter stayed with me the first 3 nights at one of the Casitas. It was beautiful little oasis up on the hill, and then I spent the next three at one of the Ocean front rooms at the Inn. After a trip to Granada, we returned and spent another three days in the same Casita, which is perfect for 2 people, 2 couples or a family. The concierge staff were extremely helpful and accommodating. And we had lots of questions. 😅 All of the rest of the staff were amazing and very polite as well. We visited all the restaurants, went horseback riding, went to 4 Yoga classes , had some Spa time, did the monkey and the farm tour as well as a drive around the resort. We did have our own 4x4 truck ( a must for the roads there) , and is something I would recommend if you would like to be able to drive around the 2700 acres, on your own, or to leave the resort as we did, to be able to explore the other areas around us, including Granada. If not, there is a shuttle leaving hourly that takes you to the other restaurants and beaches in Rancho. Both the Casita and the room in the Inn, were spacious, and beautifully appointed. Beds were very comfortable. You should note that there are no TVs in the rooms in the Inn . I did not miss a TV at all Thankfully, this is anything but your typical all inclusive resort. 😊 The only thing included is breakfast. The food there is all farm to table and delicious. There was a fair bit of rain and wind still when I arrived, and it lasted through most of the time I was there. I did finally have a sunset and time by the pool the last day I was there. That said, we did manage to keep ourselves very busy. Bring your flip-flops or footwear suitable for walking the trails which can get very muddy. I highly recommend Rancho Santana, and look forward to being able to return again.😊

Property's Favorite Review
Rancho Santana is a pretty special place - not that easy to get to, but once you are there, you are in a little self-contained world apart. We stayed in one of the Casitas, reasonably close to the main amenities, but comfortable and private (also cheaper than the other options Rancho offers). Comfortable, well-equipped (incl. a full kitchen), good WiFi, good AC, with its own garden full of birds and butterflies. The gardens throughout the resort are beautiful, but it is the natural areas that will captivate you. There are five separate beaches throughout the 2,700 acre property, and a free shuttle will drop you at any of them and pick you up whenever you like. These are wild beaches, not great for swimming because of the huge waves, but great to walk along (and surfing is a big thing here, if you are into that). Inland is miles and miles of dry tropical forest, full of birds, lizards and monkeys (howler and spider). The terrain is often steep and hilly but there is a whole network of trails and dirt roads to explore, long and short. Or you can just stroll the beaches and potter on the rocks. The resort also puts on free guided hikes, birdwatching strolls, monkey scouting, garden tours, etc, which we thought were excellent, although hardly anyone seems to take advantage of them. My wife also did a horseriding trip around the ranch, which was charged separately. There are also, of course, the swimming pools (3), the spa and yoga studio (the latter up a lot of steps), pool bars, etc. for the less adventurous), and lots of places to just sit and watch the waves and the birds. The main restaurant, La Finca y el Mar, is excellent, although as vegetarians we felt a bit constrained by the three veggie meals on the menu, good as they were (you can probably negotiate and ask for alternatives). I think meat-eaters will be very happy with the food. La Boquita restaurant also has a couple of veggie offerings, but is not open every day. La Taquería, way out at Playa Los Perros, also does good local food for lunch, but is also not open every day. And, remember, you are many miles away from the next nearest public restaurant. The breakfasts (now included in the room rate) at El Cafe are great, though, for veggies and meat-eaters alike, with good Nicaraguan coffee too, so you may not need lunch at all You can also pick up some food at La Tienda to eat in. Most (all?) of the food is apparently grown organically on-site. Everything can be signed to the room, so there is no need to carry around money or cards. We only did one off-site trip - Granada and Masaya Volcano - although several others are offered. This one included excellent ziplining in the forests of Volcán Mombacho, lunch and a quick stroll around hot, colonial Granada (we could have liked more time.in the town), a boat trip around the Isletas de Granada (birds, monkeys, views and fancy houses), some time in smaller towns like Catarina (including a demonstration of traditional pottery-making) and, probably the highlight, a dusk visit to Volcán Masaya to watch the mesmerizing red lava in the caldera. The trip was a full day, and a good introduction to the rest of Nicaragua. It did not require too much walking, and our guide Eddy and driver Johnny were both excellent. Checkin, checkout and administration at Rancho were easy and efficient throughout, and the staff were invariably pleasant and polite (and almost all speak English). The front office (particularly Francisco) were also very efficient at answering my many questions, both before and during our stay. We thought the COVID precautions amd protocols were fine - most people wore masks, and much of life was lived out in the fresh air anyway. Plus, the whole place did not seem that busy while we were there (early April). All in all, highly recommended.

We can't say enough about Rancho Santana. They arranged transportation to pick us up from our home in Costa Rica and take us all the way to Rancho Santana. The drivers were on time and very friendly and kind. They helped tremendously crossing the boarder into Nicaragua and back. The hotel is beautiful. The rooms are very clean and large. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful. The food is simply incredible and comes from a farm right on the property itself. We had high expectations for Rancho Santana based on our friend's recommendation and it did not disappoint in the slightest. You won't regret going here.

Rancho Santana was all and more that my best friend, Xaviera Pepe (who owns a house there) promised it to be. My family and I traveled and stayed there with Xavi and her kiddos for 10 days on and off (since we also got to visit other beautiful places in Nicaragua, like Granada, Laguna de Apoyo, Ometepe, Volcan Masaya) I was very impressed by Rancho Santana’s breath-taking natural beauty and the many entertainment activities it has to offer to kids and families. For example three nice swimming pools, 5 beaches, sand boarding at Playa Duna, surfing lessons at Playa Los Perros, birdwatching, monkey scouting, night campfires -most of these activities my family did guided by Berman, who is a skilled and very informed multi-tasked guide and a wonderful person! Xavi’s family and mine really appreciated him! :) We also enjoyed the company of guide Eddy and real estate representative Alberto who both took us to some beautiful houses tours inside the Rancho. All considered, we got a great experience at Rancho Santana (loved the food at main restaurant La Finca y el Mar, and was very happy to enjoy a massage and some relaxing time at the Spa!) and will definitely plan to make of this Rancho a recurrent family vacations destination. Gracias a tod@s los que nos ofrecieron un muy servicio en Rancho. Saludos, Ivette Gómez (Xaviera Pepe’s friend).

Rancho Santana is a very special place. We've been back several times now, and each time it keeps getting better. The newest addition: the Spa, is beautiful and peaceful and incredible. We just love making memories with our family at Rancho. Whether it's some sangria on the patio, some fun swims, sandboarding at Playa Duna, sweating it out in the gym at Fun Limon, or the delicious food at ALL the F&B offerings......just perfection!

We just said goodbye to Nicaragua after an incredible 10 days enjoying the epic beaches, fresh seafood and warm hospitality. Rancho Santana was such a delightful place to stay for a family with young children. Our boys are 7 & 10 - a great age to take full advantage of all the amenities on site. From family surf lessons to horseback riding, a wonderful kids club that they actually begged us to let them attend, 3 pools, sandboarding, monkey watching, family bonfires, mountain biking, amd more. The property is immense - almost 3000 acres - my husband and I also enjoyed ourselves with daily yoga classes in the stunning pavillion that overlooks the coast, relaxation time and quality family time. If I had a bit kore time I definitely would have booked a spa appointment - but all the more reason to return! We gave this family spring break trip a 10/10 - A Spring Break Success

First - apologies for the length. I know that I prefer seeing details in reviews. So read what you like ... ignore the rest. Just returned from our second trip to this amazing place, and it has somehow gotten even better than the first time (in 2015). If you have become a little tired of the predictable beach or island vacations of Mexico or the Caribbean, do yourself a favor and go beyond the ordinary by visiting Rancho Santana to get a taste of what Nicaragua has to offer. Prepare for a bit of an adventure to get there, including a ride through some extraordinary Nicaraguan and/or Costa Rican countryside, depending on which route you take. The Ranch will help you with travel arrangements if you need it. Either way you’ll probably pass by the gorgeous Lake Nicaragua to the east, with its dramatic twin volcanoes rising up from the center. On the way into Rancho Santana don’t be surprised if you spot a troop of howler monkeys hanging around in the trees overhead. We shared the road briefly with a coatl as we entered (you can look it up), not something you see every day on the East Coast where we live. The resort offers a variety of accommodations. The Inn is centrally located and offers excellent hotel amenities. For a place that feels more your own, there are houses, condos and smaller “casitas” available for rent. The closer to the Inn you are, the less you will need a vehicle as the Ranch offers complementary shuttles to any of the five spectacular beaches that are part of its 2,700 acres. Try to get to each of those beaches, if you can. Los Perros is where you can take surf lessons, shop at the surf shop and get lunch at La Taqueria. Don’t miss the mahi-mahi ceviche if they have it. As for dining, the main restaurant at the Inn, called La Finca y El Mar, is superb, with locally sourced food and craft cocktails. Also for dinner we ate at La Boquita, a beautiful open-air restaurant with stunning views over the ocean. Try the raspas de arroz – a crispy rice dish served family style – and don’t miss sunset over the water. You can buy your own provisions at the ranch store, La Tienda, if you want to make your own meals, though it’s best to stock up on groceries in the town of Rivas on the way into the resort if you plan to do any real cooking. Relatively new to the ranch is a café at the Inn that offers breakfast, including fresh-baked pastries and even smoothies and healthy bowls. And speaking of healthy, it’s hard not to get some exercise if you’re inclined. The simplest option is going on hikes, or just walking along the beaches and rock shelves that border the ocean in many spots along the coast. We felt like kids spending hours exploring the tiny fish, mussels, sea urchins, etc., in the little tidal pools that form as the tides come and go. Don’t forget to lather up with sunscreen because it’s easy to forget that you’re much closer to the Equator down there. For the more adventurous there is swimming, of course, in the various pools or the Pacific Ocean. You can try the above-mentioned surfing lessons, or just bring or rent a board and head out on your own. Last time we had a blast sandboarding down a huge hill at Playa Duna. The hike up the steep 200-meter sand dune is strenuous and definitely worth it. We didn’t try this, but I know the ranch will also arrange a fishing excursion for you. We did take advantage of the stables, where the staff first walked us through a quick lesson for newbies on how to safely ride and lead a horse, and then led us on a ride through the woods, past small villages and along the beach. Bring long pants and try to reserve a ride at the end of the day because sunset on the beach by horseback is not to be missed. Finally, you don’t want to spend time at Rancho Santana without booking an appointment at the Spa (called The Spa in El Bosque). Like everything else at the ranch, it was designed to meld with the landscape, not to stand out against it. We got a couples massage that included hot stone therapy and time reserved for the hot and cold plunge pools. Close by the spa is the yoga center, which offers various classes for all levels, including the Thursday evening “Sunset Slow Flow,” which one of our friends raved about. Rancho Santana is a hidden gem of luxury set in a rugged landscape that rewards those who like to explore, or just experience a vacation beyond the usual. It’s a bonus that you’ll be contributing to a local economic engine that trains and employs hundreds of people in a rural area that has greatly benefited from its presence. Most of the ranch’s furnishings, for instance, were made on site in the wood and metal shops it established. I guarantee that when you return your friends’ ears will perk up when you tell them where you traveled.

We hosted our wedding at Rancho in December of 2021 and we don't think it's an exaggeration to say it was the greatest wedding of all time Thanks to Erik, Dominga, and all the incredible staff, not only did we have the wedding of our dreams, but our friends and family had the adventure of a lifetime too. My wife and I love Nicaragua. It's a special place and Rancho does a great job of letting the best parts of the country (its ruggedness, the people, the jungle, the ocean, the food) shine through while also giving you a luxury experience. We typically stay at surf hotels so it was definitely a treat. Coordinating a 3-day wedding for 50+ guest is a feat, but Erik and Dominga made the process so much easier for us and our guests. They were responsive and went through every detail with us to make sure we had confidence going into our big day. We were able to give them high level ideas (and yes, some very particular and unreasonable requests), and they made sure those ideas were executed to perfection. We didn't anticipate all the micro-decisions that had to be made, but they gave us options and their recommendations to make those decisions much easier. Even though we were stressed as the day approached, they went above and beyond to make sure we and our guests had everything we needed. Dominga even hopped on the phone with a customs agent when a friend was having problems at the Nicaraguan border. The food and drinks are excellent. Both the restaurants and the wedding food delivered in a big way. We may be biased, but several friends unsolicited said it was the best wedding food they'd ever had. From the casual first night at La Boquita, to the family style meal at the reception, to the recovery tacos and ceviche on the beach they day after the party, everything was fresh, local, and delicious. The beauty of Rancho can't be overstated. The architecture of The Inn and all the other accommodations is beautiful and the construction is solid. But, what really shines is the stunning natural landscape of Nicaragua. At any given moment, you are either staring at the ocean or walking through a jungle of lush greenery. Definitely hit up the spa and yoga. They are located at the top of a set of natural rock stairs which is a nice walk in itself. When you get to the top, both the yoga studio and the spa overlook treetops. Both the yoga classes and massages are among the best we've ever had. In New York where we're from, spas and yoga studios play rainforest sounds over a speaker. At Rancho, you get the real deal. Get ready for the soothing sounds of rain, birds, monkeys, and leaves rustling in the wind. The surf shop has a great selection of boards and great instructors and guides. Whether you're a complete novice or someone looking to improve, you can't go wrong. We went to a new break near we'd never been to before and Lances Left with Darwin who was awesome. They also have a surf photographer. We're always in the water at the same time, so we finally have some high quality photo evidence that we surf.

Rancho Santana provides the perfect vacation for relaxation combined with fun activities and adventure travel. Our family did a bit of everything during our one-week stay: surf lessons; horseback riding; sand surfing; mountain biking; trail running/hiking; monkey scouting and farm tour; and yoga. Yet we still found a lot of time to relax by the ranch's pools and on its five distinct beaches and to enjoy some really good food and drink at the four restaurants. And all of the prices were reasonable. We also spent a day away from the ranch, touring Granada and its nearby isles on Lake Nicaragua and the Masaya town and volcano. All was easily accessible during a one-day (albeit a very full day) guided trip. We would highly recommend taking at least a day or two to see parts of Nicaragua outside the ranch. And the folks at Rancho Santana will be waiting for you at your return with a lovely dinner or a poolside nightcap. Truly vacation perfection.
