We are spending a few days in Bukit Lawang and have eaten at Green Hill twice. The food is excellent! Several delicious vegetarian options are on the menu featuring local tofu, tempeh and veggies. There is also an all-day breakfast and the juices and iced coffees are also delicious. I'm sure we'll be back tomorrow for breakfast. Highly recommended. Plus the resident kitties are too cute. 😁
Where to begin...andrea operates a top notch establishment! Communicating with her over several months she answered all my questions! She had arranged transportation from Medan airport which was a smooth transfer. Arriving at green hill we were greeted with smiling welcoming staff (Tambrin and Satya). We thoroughly enjoyed their guitar playing and singing in the evenings.!!! Our rooms were clean and comfortable. The shower was chilly but refreshing. Do bring your own toiletries. We ate all our meals at green hill even though there were other places to eat. The vibe, the quality and the presentation of the food was wonderful! Especially loved the lemon and sugar pancakes! Our 2 day jungle trek was outstanding. Bob and Cilick were our guides and they were both were so knowledgeable and fun! We hiked for about 6 hours the first day with a few lovely breaks along the way. The lunch surprise was refreshing and beautiful. We camped in a basic lean to beside a river and it was amazing to hear the sounds of the jungle throughout the night. We felt very comfortable with our guides. They also are very good cooks, each meal was delicious and catered to me and my daughters vegetarian diet. We saw 5 orangutans in the wild among other monkeys. This was pretty incredible to be so close to their habitat. The second day we went to the other national park and saw the orangutans who are used to tourist. This hike was not as physically challenging the second day which was helpful since we were hot and tired from the day before. We rafted back to green hill after a yummy lunch on the river bank watching the long tail Macau. Highly recommend Green Hill for adventure and a wonderful experience! My family (myself, husband, 19yr old daughter and 18yr son) give it 2 thumbs up! Way to go everyone at Green Hill!!! …
I'm basing this review on our whole experience in Bukit Lawang, not just the room, given that Green Hill organised our whole 4 days there. We had the most amazing time! At first, we were a bit shocked. We're not the most adventurous travellers and are normally used to staying in air-conditioned hotel rooms in cities, so when we got to Green Hill and went into our bungalow we thought we were going to be in for a difficult few days. The shower is a bamboo pipe that shoots out a strong stream of cold water, for example. However, we actually got really into the eco-friendly jungle life. I should point out that the bed i comfy, the room was clean, the mosquito net is excellent and the fan kept us cool. It was a bit dark in there, but maybe that is so it doesn't attract too many bugs? The staff are a real highlight. Tamrin is one of the warmest, most interesting and funny people we met on our holiday. Satya and the ladies in the kitchen are great as well. We only met Andrea, the owner, briefly but she also seemed lovely and keen to hear about our trip in the jungle (I get the impression she is a real expert about the local nature so I would love to have a longer chat about her research next time we stay). The food was delicious, the view from the restuarant is incredible and we enjoyed the singsongs with a beer in the evening. However, the trips were what made the stay. We did a half day trek in the jungle and we were lucky enough to see an adult male orangutan, and a female with her baby (as well as loads more amazing nature). Our guides, Andu and Eye, were fantastic and were happy to put up with how useless we were! We also did a trip to the bat cave which was followed by a little trek down the river where we stopped for a BBQ (genuinely the best chicken i've ever tasted). Again, Nanda our guide was great and was very patient with us. Overall, our stay at Green Hill started with trepidation, with us questioning whether we could last 4 nights, but ended with us being totally gutted to have to leave. We will definitely be back again!…
My husband and I visited green hill as the first part of our honeymoon backpacking trip in Indonesia. After a long journey to Medan, green hill arranged a car transport that picked us up at our hotel. After 3 hours drive we arrived at Bukit Lawang. Honestly it was the best experience of my life and I cannot recommend it enough! Bukit Lawang is a picturesque Indonesian village on the border of the national park (rainforest) and on the banks of a river. It was absolutely stunning. Greenhill itself was a lovey guesthouse that was clean and tidy, the bed in the room was very comfortable and there was a private bathroom. Because of the rural location, the water is cold (no hot water) and there isn’t a flushing toilet but a toilet that you manually pour water down to flush. It’s easy to learn to do and honestly didn’t bother us in the slightest! We got the best guide ever called Bob, his English was amazing and his knowledge about the jungle and the wildlife was incredible. Should we ever go back I would only ask for Bob! We did the discovery trek which is 3 days, we hiked in Bukit Lawang the first day and saw some semi wild orangutans from a near distance. We also got to tube down the river which was heaven after a hot and sweaty hike and was very fun too! That night we went further into the less populated jungle of Bukit Kencur which was virtually untouched by tourists. We saw some totally wild orangutans, Thomas leaf monkeys, Macaques and all sorts of other wildlife. It was amazing! We camped at base camp (a little shelter) on yoga mats which was a bit uncomfortable but very authentic! (We would recommend you being a sleeping bag or a little blow up Mattress for your own comfort). Dinner was cooked over a camp fire and was delicious! Day two we hiked deeper into the jungle and stayed at Green Hills outpost which was just fantastic, a proper lodge with a foam mattress bed, views that are just indescribably beautiful! Again all meals were provided! We had a cooking class in the morning which was great and then made our way back to greenhill by motorbike via the local village. After one night at Greenhill we then took an arranged car back to the airport in Medan to go onwards on our journey. Cannot recommend greenhill and Bob enough for an authentic and exciting time in the jungle, it was unforgettable! Laundry can be done in the village and we were very happy with the service. Any toiletries, toilet paper or bottled water can be bought in the village and we would definitely recommend investing in a strong mosquito repellent! We did and still got bitten! Also there are leeches in the jungle that seem to like the tourists! Make sure you wear long trousers, tops and have thick socks! Definitely bring a few sets of clothes to change into! Hiking shoes are a must! The hike was physically challenging and we think best suited to people that have a basic level of fitness, however greenhill caters to everyone and can arrange hikes for all abilities and restrictions! All in all we the would rate our experience 5/5. We would like to thank Andrea for having us and specially thank Bob and his team for going out of their way to make our jungle experience a fantastic one!…
We had a wonderfull time in green hill guesthouse, after a warm welcome from the superfriendly staff we went to our room with a breathtaking view. Andrea organized a airporttransfer for us which was just great. We went for a two days trekking. The first day we went to see the orang utans which we saw. It was marvellous. We spent a night in the ecolodge of greenhill and that was stunning. Completely in the jungle with enough comfort like a fresh cooked meal and a bed. The views were excellent. The second day we spent hikingin another part of the national park, less crowded, less touristic. We did not see any animals but actually it was even better than the first day. Andrea organized a tour for us with Andu as a guide who was able to find the perfect balance between giving us the best information with respect for our privacy. I can recommend the greenhill as well as the transfers and treks they organize…
