We stayed in room 212 and had an amazing view of the sea and the pool area. If you want a very laid back, quiet and peaceful holiday this is the hotel for you. All of the staff could not do enough for us. The reception staff were totally fantastic when we needed their help. We were very grateful for their knowledge and professionalism and kindness. All staff made sure we really enjoyed our stay. The half board option was amazing. The food was delicious in the morning, and in the evening we had 4 courses and the food was totally mouthwatering! There was no sun lounger hogging, and we were able to find a free sunbed any time of the day, they were super comfy too! Our room was serviced daily to a very high standard and the air con was very quiet and effective.

Room Tip: Ask for a room which is not ground level, and a sea view is a must. Room 212 was excellent..

After reading a recent review , I felt compelled to add my own well over due review to hopefully put potential guests minds at rest.

The Ionian Emerald has lovely facilities, very friendly staff and is located right by the beach over looking Ithaca with an adjacent promenade providing the route for an easy stroll into Sami.

The Ionian Emerald shares it's facilities with the sister hotel next door the Athina
( not Arjuna !!)

In all my visits, I have never experienced any issues, conflict, or indeed noticeable differences between the two sets of guests.

To be totally transparent, I am well placed to review the Ionian Emerald, having used it's facilities over numerous years, know many of it's staff but I choose purely out of personal preference to stay at the Athina.

In simple terms, some people choose to pay more and stay at the Ionian Emerald enjoying more luxurious rooms, enhanced breakfast and convenient onsite restaurant. They are not paying for exclusive use of the facilities. Other's choose the simplicity and homely warm ambience of the Athina as is borne out by the many repeat guests from all walks of life.

Each to their own, the choice does not define a person.

So frankly for someone in a previous review to have an expectation on the type of guests that will stay at TUI 5 star I find quite ludicrous , narrow minded and shows a complete lack of understanding of the typical clientele that chose to stay at the Athina.

As the famous quote goes:

"Those that matter don't mind and those that mind don't matter"

Enjoy your stay

Spent a week at this hotel and had a lovely relaxing time.

Location is good with Sami just a 10-15 mins walk away. The walk is pleasant also with a path along the beach that takes you directly to the main tourist area where you can find lots of restaurants and small shops etc.

Breakfast was good with several options and fresh omelettes made to order. Be mindful of the wasps if sitting outside. The food in the restaurant was superb though much more expensive than the main restaurants in Sami - but good if you want a quiet night in.

Pool was clean with very comfortable sun loungers, towels are provided. The Beach had sun beds also but it’s quite a small area on a stoney beach so we stuck to the pool.

Rooms were extremely comfortable with daily housekeeping. Air con, fridge, hairdryer and a safe available in the room. 3 of us were staying in one room and the first room we were allocated was small with a fold out single bed, the receptionist recognised it was a bit tight for 3 people and moved us with no problem to a much better room with 3 beds and more space.

Staff were all attentive, helpful and friendly.
Having stayed in other 5* hotels I would say it’s probably 4* but still very nice, clean and pleasant.

Would recommend walking up to Melissani Cave which is a 15 min walk. Also would recommend a taxi (10 mins or so) to Antisamos Beach which is beautiful.

Quiet area with a relaxed vibe.
We would go back to this hotel, perhaps next time would also hire a car and see a little more of Kefalonia.

We were disappointed the moment we entered the hotel. It has the potential to be a 4 star but is run like a 3 star. Everything is very budgeted, not enough personal, cleaning service just barely manages with the rooms. No gym. The breakfast is poor. The biggest joke is that the hotel facilities are being at full capacity used by the next door 2 star Hotel Athina, the pool and sun loungers on the beach are 80% guests from Athina, I think actually the hotel is trying to please the 2 star hotel customers more. There were also 2-3 large families that seemed to be friends of the owner using the pool facilities. So all in all 90% of the facilities were not there to be used for the ‘5 Star’ hotel guests. During times of Covid, of course this is a joke and definitely disallowed by the health regulators in Greece (knowing from other hotels).
On a positive note, the setting is pretty. The personal is kind. The a/c is efficient and silent, the mattresses in our room were also good.
It could be much more if there was a certain professional management behind.
Basically none of the negative reviews have been taken on board to improve the hotel. It really is just as you read from the reviews.
Kefalonia this year is infested with bees (because of a mild winter) and we got stung a few times. Also the 2 little bridges on the promenade that are connecting the hotel to Sami, were not rebuild after the storm last year, so now it’s rather a walk in the sea partially.

On the positive note the hotel personnel is very kind , attentive and tries its best to accomodate guests. Hotel setting is nice and quiet next to a stone beach easily accessible. Facilities are new , rooms are fresh , matresses and air conditioning all work well. What doesnt work is the way the owners run the business. There is a bone bare bed and breakfast next door which belongs to the same owners and they decided to allow the visitors of that place to fuy use the facilities of the 5 star next door. This way the disregard the 5 star customers and destroy the serenity as there is constantly an overwhelming B&B crowd that storms in. Quality control or crowd control is non existent and during covid that is quite peculiar. I shouldnt also forget to mention that the owners are cutting favors to some of their next in kind and outside visitors that dont stay either in the cheap next door Athena hotel or in the Ionian emerald , do appear. I believe i counted yesterday only 5 greek american families each one with 2 to 3 kids pkud local nunnies. So that is a 20 plus odd crowd appearing just because they are friends of the owner while Greek covid policy clearly states that no visitors are allowed. On other items , breakfast is very low quality . The products are not fresh , tomatoes and cucumber look half dead , feta is soggy and smelly. They mix waffles next to baked beans and sausages. All that reflect the poor attention and management style. Dinner menu is ok but over priced for the quality. Oh and the cook is a dj as well . Breakfast area is just a random arrangement of chairs and tables and super sticky as well. Overall they run it on a budget and it is a shame as there is potentiality there. They are clearly not hoteliers. Or to rephrase the owners are bed and breakfast hoteliers which build this up but have no clue how to run it. 4 star if it was properly run , 3 at it's current state. No masks where supplied for half our stay (5 days) and no cleaning was done in the common spaces. That tells yoy how much they care for their customer's serenity and peace of mind.

On arrival it looked like a lovely quiet hotel, just what we needed for a peaceful break. As others have said, the breakfast is a little disappointing, the same every morning and juice and water runs out very quickly. The rooms were clean and serviced daily, but the bathroom was very dark and the shower leaked. It could do with updating and replacing with proper showers rather than a shower attachment over the bath. We weren’t aware when we booked that the guests at the more reasonably priced Athina hotel have free access to all the facilities at the Ionian Emerald. The pool became busy with large families who were noisy and dominated the use of sunbeds and the pool. The first day was perfect, quiet and relaxing. Then guests from the other hotel arrived and it all changed. You can see why people stay at the Athina hotel instead, all the same facilities at a fraction of the price.

Positives:
1. Staff are attentive and go the extra mile to help. Elena was able to arrange a hire car for me, delivered and picked up from the hotel. Staff behind the counter helped us book ferry tickets and transfers. Rather than telling us what to do, they did it all for us, which was very helpful.
2. Short cab ride into Sami, but in our opinion a very good location as visitors can choose between spending time by the pool or the quiet beach. There is also a very nice and affordable seafood restaurant a stone throw away from the hotel which we enjoyed more than any of the restaurants at Sami.
3. The hotel is small enough for you to to chat to the staff and get to know them over a few days. The experience felt more personal.

Development areas:
1. The hotel was nice and clean but didn’t exude luxury. Deck chairs were in the process of being upgraded which is a nice touch.
2. The breakfast buffet was fairly generic and relatively budget like. Waitresses at breakfast were nice.
3. My wife had a lovely spa experience. They should make this more known to guests apart from the sign on the front counter. We spoke to other guests who weren’t aware but would’ve been interested.

Then on sunday it filled up with his friends . Even the local fireman family. Food in hotel rubbish the chief would find it hard to get a job on a burger bar .

Stayed as a couple for 10 days in June. Pleasant and friendly staff. Good location on a small shingle beach just a 20 minute walk to restaurants and cafes in the centre of Sami. Only used the hotel restaurant on one occasion and was pleased with the meal although the menu was limited and we would have struggled with choice for more than 4 or 5 nights. The major downside to the hotel is the ongoing policy of pool sharing as highlighted in other posts on this site. The guests from the sister hotel - no pool - are encouraged to utilise the facilities of the Emerald and obviously do so on a daily basis. Not a major issue to us but annoying when, on two occasions, we went out for the morning and returned just after lunch to be told that there were no towels available for about an hour. As I say, not a crisis and did not impact on our enjoyment of this beautiful island but my wife and I agreed that should we holiday in Sami in the future we would stay at the Athena. Same facilities at a much lower cost. I would suggest that management need to review the pool policy. In summary a pleasant stay helped by efficient and friendly staff but not leaving a 5 star review as I felt that we were subsidising other people’s holiday.

Since booking, I have tried numerous times to contact the resort and not one email has been replied to. I even called and they palmed me off and hung up the call. This is the worst customer service I have ever dealt with. Digraceful for a supposedly 5 star resort!

Can you buy cigarettes in Sami Kefalonia

Sorry, we are non smokers. However, I am sure that the local supermarkets sell cigarettes (as they do in UK). With regard to duty-frees, the airport in Kefalonia does have a decent section dedicated to tobacco products.
