Places to stay are graded on a 0-100 scale. The higher the grade, the easier it is for travelers to find restaurants and things to do within walking distance.
Ten wooden houses by the sea for 20 guests. The ocean view and small sandy beach are magnificent. Good restaurant, especially octopus, shrimps and spaghetti. Very comfortable and large rooms with high ceilings and a balcony. Very friendly staff.

Room Tip:The only disadvantage is the road between Mia and here is terrible. Easier to access from Baracoa.

I returned to Villa Maguana for a few weeks over Christmas and New years 2010. As soon as I got out of the vehicle, the overwhelming feeling returned, prompted by that amazing bluewater beach and the barrier reef, displaying and expressing the whitewater waves like a truly skilled artist displays his soul. The staff was largely unchanged, save as to Alexseis, who now is the manager at Porto Santo, in town. No surprise there. Alexseis is a terrific hospitable manager. My room was terrific...second story and overlooking the reef. Roma, the amazingly beautiful and delightful chambermaid, welcomed me back with opened arms and a tear. She had the baby she was expecting before, and she brought all the pictures to show me. Warm wonderful place, quiet and intimate, and you can walk to the larger adjacent beach. It has a few tourists each day on a bus or two, but only from 11am or so til 3 ish. One night, we were on the big beach til two in the morning, virtually alone. The moon was full, the spirits were high, and the huge waves were crashing their white foamy tops on the reef, under a full moon. Food was good. Service was terrific. personalities....the best!!! Snorkeing was good, and one day a local, Jordan, got a nice pargo (red snapper) about 15 or more pounds. I got a lot of chonch, but returned them alive to the sea bed. Did find a fifty or so year old rum bottle. Lotsa fish near the reef in the late day, just before dark. Lots of local food offered, especially seafood and fruit. Hard to turn down! Locals behind the hotel and behind the big beach, were friendly and helpful. I often walked at night, in the virtual dark, and never had a moment of anxiety, except for the night I walked into a pig. Another night in jet blackness while wandering back from the big beach, I met Estrella, an elderly neighbor lady, who lives on the beach. Wonderful old gal...very friendly. Maguana is Cuba exemplified , for sure. Rolando the new manager is wonderful, and Elvis his deputy, is as funny and cheerful as ever. Stay for more than a few days to get in the Maguana pace, which is somewhere bwtween whoa and revrse, maybe park??

Now 16 rooms - there are 4 chalets, well spaced, each with 4 rooms. There is a private cove of white sand with turquoise waters with the public beach within easy reach.
It was always relaxed, calm with hammocks, rocking chairs and romantic seaside isolated tables and chairs to sit on if you wanted a break from the beach.
Not sure what the Alpine chalet design is getting at, but the rooms are a superior quality and very comfortable. The restaurant is also good.
Nothing to do in the evenings except eat, have a drink and watch the stars and the lapping waves. Lovely.

Hello all i really recommend this little hotel, just 4 rooms its very quiet. The best thing is the atmosphere familiar like a summer house with family, beach, girlfriend, sun, mojitos. I was in 1999 when im study in Santiago de Cuba and its very dificult to arrive driving its better came in airplane till baracoa and there pick a particular's taxis. its was very cheap to stay and peacefull! i hope back there to enjoy more days in the best beach a saw in Cuba (im brazilian!) Viva maguana! [ ] JJsly

We spent a night here. It was so beautiful and tranquil, very laid back. We came in from Baracoa, road is rough and you can easily miss the sign pointing in the direction of the beach. One day we came for the beach, stopped in on route to Humboldt Park and spent the afternoon swimming and sunbathing there. Staff was very pleasant and hospitable. We booked a room for the following night and left our Baracoa Casa a day early. Booking ahead of time, online will give you a cheaper rate, however the pope was in Holgin and we didn't want to take a chance. Rooms are rustic, clean and very pleasant. The clean décor is a welcome change from the synthetic, neon aesthetic of the casa particular. Roosters, hens and chicks prowl the area. You can hear the sea from all the rooms (they have balconies). The only drawback was the food. It was OK, but not close to what we had at the casas. The public beach is pretty close and it is usually more crowded with vendors trying to sell you stuff. The beach at the hotel is detached and quite. We could have spent a week there.

We visited Villa Maguana in December 2010 as part of a 5-week trip through Cuba. We drove from Holguin and it took 5 hours on the 300 km. The last 50 km was especially bad. Luckily we were driving a 4x4 Jeep so we were prepared for the bad roads.
We stayed at various lodgings from 5-star all-inclusive hotels to remote Casa Particulars and must say that we were pleasantly surprised with Villa Maguana. The wooden chalets fit well into the lush vegetation. We whad a room on the second floor overlooking the ocean. The sea is somewhat wilder here that at other parts of Cuba, but beautiful.
Only one other couple stayed here and they went hiking during the day so we never saw them. We were basically all alone except for the staff, so we felt as if we were on a deserted island. The private beach belonged to us. We spent the days playing cards, sunbathing and swimming. We would walk / swim to the bigger public beach where there is a little restaurant. We also saw a black pig with her little piglets walking on the beach. Nowhere else have we seen something like that!
Don't expect a wide variety of food. They use what they have which make the place more special. Definately try their banana chips. Really good. One evening we literally had 'the catch of the day'. When we sat down, we asked wheher they had fish. The guy said we must wait and he walked out of the restaurant. 10 minute later he came back with a huge smile and a big fish - he went out to the lines he had in the water and found that he had caught a fish. We had fresh fish that evening!
Really a great place to spend a couple of days.

The Villa Maguana is a bit difficult to get to, particularly in the dark, but once in Baracoa take the road to Moa going north, and drive for about 20 km on a very poor surface, and watch for a right turn with a sign just past the police post. Then follow the signs to the beach until you see a large sign for the hotel.
Once you get there it is all worth it. We arrived at ten at night after a traumatic drive from Camaguey, but the staff turned too and made dinner for us. It was a good start.
The hotel consists of four or five chalets each containing two rooms, more than is described in any of the guide books. It has its own small and attractive beach and on the other side of a small river is the closest publich beach to Baracoa.
It is a wonderful place to relax and do nothing, and if you started from Havana it is a haven of peace. One word describes it - excellent.

My husband and I chose to stay at Villa Maguana for 4 nights during our honeymoon as our one splash out and concession to 'luxury' - at 96 CUC (GBP 50) it was almost 5 times the price of the casa particulares in Baracoa (NB, if you book the room via Cubatur in Baracoa town and pay in advance through them, you can pay by credit card and it is only 74 CUC per night). We had already spent three days staying in Baracoa town and exploring the countryside, so were ready for some beach, chill out and romantico time. Staying at Villa Maguana is a trade off - you get privacy, beautiful gardens, no hassle, a chalet with a balcony right on your own private beach, the staff are lovely and it's extremely peaceful. However, it lacks the character of the casa particulares and the passion of the people who run them. The food is also a disappointment - with a lack of fresh produce, particularly the fruit at breakfast, and bland dinners. However, a wander further down the beach into the public section is the perfect contrast - look out for the wonderful Hector who if you are lucky will take you to his aunt's house for the most delicious fresh fish lunch you will ever eat. The close-knit team of locals who work at the 2-4 beach bars/restaurants there are the friendliest, most welcoming bunch and we spent many happy hours chatting with them, drinking rum. This part of our trip was one of the highlights and a welcome break from some of the hassles and complications that are a part of travelling around Cuba - don't spend your whole holiday there, but if you have the time and money it's a perfect place to escape to for a while.

We stayed at Villa Maguana for only one night, as a brief getaway from the hustle of Santiago and Baracoa (although Baracoa is a very charming, quaint, almost quiet town). Although only 20 km away from Baracoa, it takes almost an hour to get there as the roads are very bad, but once you are there, it is a little piece of heaven. The villas are very well done, air conditioned, and spacious. Its a beautiful location, the beach is stunning, and it wasn't at all crowded, although the staff insisted they were fully booked! if you want a really nice escape to a tranquil haven, come here!

Tranquil setting on one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Cuba, Playa Maguana. Very spacious rooms with lovely views of the coastline. We were so lucky to be the only ones staying there (16 rooms total) for our one evening. Truly wondeful and so peaceful as we had the private beach to ourselves. However, we ate in the hotel restaurant a couple of times (as the options out there are very limited) and the food really was quite average. Perhaps bringing along your own food from Baracoa and having picnics on the beach would be the ideal solution!

We had the same problem and booked accommodation in Baracoa for a couple of days first. Rode our bikes out to Maguana and organised a reservation. Your best bet is to go through the Cuban travel agency Gaviota. We dealt with Wilder 53 21 644115 burogtours(at)gavbcoacocu He is based in the Hotel La Habanera speaks English fluently and can book anything you might need - flights, etc. Maguana is not your typical Cuban holiday beach. We loved it and hope you do too! Wouldn't let me post his email put periods after buro gavbcoa and co
