Extremely helpful staff. Very pleasant large room with a very soft bed. Shower took some adjusting but once set, it worked well with plenty of hot water.
Meals were really good, whether for breakfast, lunch or dinner. And they stock decent Ethiopian wine at a very fair price.
Resident tour advisor, Nahom, arranged a really super day tour of the old town with Fasil.

Disliked · I misunderstood the instructions for meeting the transfer minibus on arrival at Dire Dawa airport. Could possible be made even clearer that you have to exit the car park past airport security - buses and drivers are not allowed into the car park. Transfer from Dire Dawa is US$40 for the van.

To be very very honest, Harar does not really ace when it comes to sleeping options. Most reviewed places are far from having acceptable and clean facilities. Then you find a place like the Winta hotel, which immediately fixes your lodging woes. Set a couple kilometers away from old town, this hotel with 12 rooms and a restaurant is quite clean and with friendly staff. The owner and host, Daniel, is very hospitable and takes care of his guests. He will fix you transport wherever around Harar you want to go, as well as will invite you for meals at his restaurant (yeah, no extra charges). After spending over 10 days in Ethiopia, I can tell you that this is not common behaviour! So we were pleasantly surprised. Going to the old town is no issue really. Takes a few minutes on a Bajaj (Daniel will hail you one!) and costs only 20 birrs. Rooms are spacious, clean and there were no issues with hot water. They also provide unlimited water bottles and bananas (unheard in most other hotels)! I highly recommend this hotel to whoever visits Harar. You won't regret it.

Two things are truly outstanding here: the staff and the food. The team in Winta is friendly and nice, which doesn't come as a surprise if you had meet the owner, Daniel. This is a honest man, full of positive energy who will make sure the guests feel welcomed at his place. And this is the key for the whole experience: staying in Winta for 3 nights was always positive and I was happy there. I will keep sweet memories of these days.

The food is great! I can't say it was the best I had in Ethiopia, but it comes second after the great Fours Sisters in Gondar. Tasty and yummy dishes, good cold beer from Harar and simple but excellent breakfasts. Really, the kitchen of Winta is a must. You won't need to look further for food, eating at Winta is the best thing!

I asked a room to the back because of the road noise and it was a great idea: I had quite nights and relaxing moments during the day, no noise.

The location isn't the best, really far from the old city, but this was never a problem: there are always tuk-tuks passing by and the service costs 20 Birr - 0,60 Euros, so in the end it wasn't an issue.

We called it Faulty Towers because of comedies of errors and improvisations. Dani, the owner appeared trustworthy and he set us up with Solomon, his tour guide who led us around Harar. On the last day we heard from Solomon that due to storm the flight to Addis we were to be on the next day had been cancelled today. Solomon assured us that ours would be too and that he spoke to Ethiopian Airlines. When we called, Ethiopian said all was fine. We gave Ethiopian Dani’s number because our phones were not working in Ethiopia and with the regular power failures the internet was down frequently. Solomon insisted that the flight would be cancelled, that his travel agency HELENS TRAVEL at Ras Hotel had checked it all out and the cancellation was said to be 85%. He could rent us a car to drive the 10 hours to Addis for US$400, a substantial sum. Back at the hotel Dani made some calls and assured us the plane had definitely been cancelled. So we took the $400 car and were driven through dense fog to Addis. We counted 40 car wrecks along the road during our 516 km 10 hour ride. In Addis with functioning Internet we found out that our flight had departed and landed on schedule, a less than 1 hour flight. But now all our downstream reservations were cancelled because we were a no-show. Had Solomon’s Helen Travels agency been legit they should have warned us about the risk. It took us ages and a lot of nervous energy to fix it again. Neither Solomon nor Dani responded to my texts. In conclusion: Dani and Solomon appear like nice guys. But beware.

The hotel owner is very dishonest. They charge $350 USD or 35000 Birr (shuttle + hotel) - that is a 1:100 Birr exchange rate. Real time exchange rate is 1 USD to 53 Birr.

It was either pay 350 USD or charge 35000 Birr on the credit card. We charged on credit card because our USD is limited - ended up paying $650 USD equivalent. I don’t recommend it unless you have everything prepaid ahead of time.

Either way, scammy and dishonest.

Although the hotel was clean and decent with hot water, the dishonesty of the hotel owner leaves a sour taste. Taking advantage of foreigners - tsk tsk.

I just checked out of Winta Hotel and they’re running a black market currency exchange scam for tourists. If you don’t bring USD cash, they will charge you in Ethiopian Birr at an exchange rate of 100 Birr to 1 USD. This effectively doubles your cost. Very unethical and the only time I encountered this behavior during my 3 weeks in Ethiopia.

Also, there was no working WiFi during our stay. And we got charged for an extra night that we didn’t stay due to our bags being missing at the Dire Dawa airport so we stayed in Dire Dawa for that night. There was no cancellation policy explained to us.

I have to begin by saying that I am usually pretty easy to please and this is the first negative review that I have ever written. I was booked into the Winta Hotel but having experienced the rude, abrupt and greedy manner in which I was dealt with by the owner/manager I paid a cancellation fee and changed to the Ras Hotel which is much more comfortable and cleaner. The manager there was very friendly and helpful even though he was very busy and under quite a bit of pressure. The Winta hotel is also on a poorly lit side street which is never god, my advice is forget about the Winta.

I don't quite know where to start with this review! The room was big, clean with attached bathroom and large balcony. Harar had had no electricity for a week when we stayed and the hotel shut off their generator at 9pm so there was no TV after that and none in the morning. No chance to shower either.

The staff were clueless. We felt like the first ever guests as nobody knew what to do - couldn't find the registration book when we arrived, didn't have a receipt book when we left, breakfast was an hour later than we agreed with the owner (he'd agreed in Amharic with our guide so not down to a language problem), half the food we'd been promised for breakfast had been ''forgotten'' according to the owner.

The hotel is up a steep hill out of town, farther than we wanted to walk (and we don't mind walking). This is fine if you don't mind taking a bajaj and can actually find one. We tried to get back to the hotel late in the afternoon and couldn't find space in a bajaj for ages.

Given that we were paying so much (700 birr for a double) we decided to move as we didn't have satellite TV, hot shower or a decent breakfast (obviously lack of electricity in the town was not the hotel's fault but it was their choice not to run their generator).

We tried to check out at 1115 and the staff insisted we had to pay for the second night we'd originally intended to stay. I tried to pay for one night but they refused to give me a receipt for this. They also said check-out was 9am (later told 10am by the owner) and that other potential guests had been turned away because we hadn't checked out in time. This was clearly untrue as I'm sure we were the only guests in the hotel.

In the end I refused to pay without a receipt and told them what hotel we were going to. They threatened to get the police so we told them to go ahead and just left. The owner later (somehow) found us in a cafe in town and very reluctantly accepted one night's payment.

If they could get their act together this would be an OK place to stay - only if they halved the price too though.

This is a very simple hotel, but it has all you need. Location is not the best but a Bajaj will cost you 20 birr to go to the city gates. Room is basic, big bed, clean restroom, WiFi that sometimes makes you go nuts (but hey, you are in Harar). Breakfast was simple as well but interesting local pancakes/omelettes. Owner guy is a cool guy but hard to find him there at the hotel! However he just treated me a few drinks right before checkout (actually a lot) apparently for no reason, just was being super nice!
Just be careful when the owner is not there, the staff will not be speaking English at all...so it will take some time to check in and make yourself understand. Just be patient, but everything anyway will be ok!
Try it out if you have a night in Harar. Will be a hassle free experience, guaranteed !

Daniel and his staff have created the absolute #1 place to stay in Harar. Visiting Harar for the first time, I can tell you that it can be quite overwhelming. You need people you can trust, and Daniel is one person that you can always trust. He helped us get connected with a local guide named Abiti (also known as 'hot spicy') who was the greatest guide my wife and I have ever had. Both Daniel and Abiti can make sure your stay and exploring are the best Harar has to offer. The number that worked for us to get ahold of the Winta hotel is 091 574 0050. Please PLEASE ask for Abiti for a guide. He is fair, and honest and you would be supporting a local person that wants to invest in his community and do good things in Hata with the proceeds. The old town and surrounding villages were awesome. Abiti can take you out to a 1000 year old village outside the old town which is an experience you won't forget I promise.
