The Dark Island Hotel bar is a welcome sight on the long road from South Uist to North Uist (with Benbecula in between). There are very, very few places to eat, sleep, drink or be merry on the Uists (though they are very charming in their own way) so ANYWHERE is good. Beer and cider on tap as well as... More

We stayed here for one night as part of a Coach trip, it was an unscheduled stop due to ferry cancellations. Having read other reviews I was nervous about it. The room was fine and was newly carpeted, bedding very clean. Bathroom was a little scruffy around the edges but was clean and shower worked fine. Corridors/public areas a little... More

If you go to this hotel be sure you are not allocated room 24. The shower unit should be condemmed it was awful fortunayely we were only one night so went without showering. The beds would benefit from a new mattress or at least an enhancer. We were offered another room room 44 but though slightly brighter not an improvement.... More

The Dark Island is like most Island hotels.....Of course it is more expensive than the mainland for a similar hotel as everything has to be brought over... That said...The room was clean.....the evening meal was declared to be excellent by the O/H....breakfast tho was real lovely. If you compare £ 140 for a double room with breakfast to a £... More

I stopped here for an evening meal on friday 26 th August. The public bar was really quiet as was the rest of the place and so I went to the bar for a menu.I stood there and waited and waited until eventually I was served and my order taken. It was a simple roast of the day .After 43 minutes that... Was very disappointed with this hotel, the room was very tired the bathroom had a chrome shelf which held your towels as well and it was all rusted, the toilet seat was all stained with age, we were in room 16 which speaking to other guests was one of the better rooms, the breakfast was quite good but did not... We stayed at this hotel in the first week of August 2016. The hotel was fine but quite expensive, during our trip from Barra to Stornoway we stayed at many different B&Bs and they were all a lot better value for money. The room itself was clean and the other positive we were able to get an evening meal.

Room small , shabby and dated circa 1975 including a Corby trouser press which is very handy in the Hebrides and took up badly needed room space eg wardrobe holds 3 coat hangers. Shower worked well once you clambered over the toilet seat and bath sides to access. V Expensive for what it is - staff pleasant and helpful particularly... More

Having crossed to Lochmaddy on North Uist from the mainland by courtesy of Calmac, arrived at the the Dark Island Hotel for a two day stay. We toured around South Uist in the Titteringtons coach and then over the causeway to Eriskay. White beaches, single track roads and beautiful scenary. Plenty of interest in this wild and windy land. You... More
