As I said the location in the mountains is superb. Unfortunately not much else is! The room was perfectly serviceable but the food at both dinner, a very tired buffet with limited choice and the breakfast, again a very limed choice was awful.
I had the pleasure to visit Madeira for the first time in October 2017. The second stop of my round trip was at the Hotel Encumeada near Ribeira Brava. The hotel is stunningly located in the middle of the mountains, which, however, also means that...More

I stayed here one night on a walking trip. This hotel is the only option in this beautiful, mountainous rural area, which probably explains why it's still in business. Think "youth hostel" but with most guests being middle aged. On the plus side, the building...More
I chose this hotel for one reason, location! And it delivers. The hotel is pleasant to look at and the mountains surrounding it are truly stunning.
The rooms were clean and spacious and you get a nice view from the balcony.

Hello Hippo11. The Hotel Encumeada is a favourite hideaway and about 45 kms from the airport. I can do it in about 45 minutes depending on traffic and time of day. Last June it took +/- 90 minutes from (evening) landing to arrival at the hotel. The first 40 kms are a doddle along the VR1 motorway from the airport until it ends near Ribiera Brava. Join the VE4 for Sao Vicente a short distance until you come to a left branch for the ER228 (Serra de Agua) when the fun really starts ... climbing several hundred metres round bends into the mountains. It is easier than it sounds. It is not single track road. If wisely hiring a car, make sure it is powerful enough. A 1.2 litre engine will manage but toil and there are a lot of steep roads on Madeira. Apologies that this is a bit long-winded. Enjoy the trip. Best regards, Ron munro
