Like many travellers have stated, this is a beautiful traditional Thai hotel set within a jungle of palms and plants and directly on to the stunning beach in Chaweng. We got an absolute bargain for a 2 week stay here via a BA package, and given what we paid, we felt we got amazing value for money. Having said that, if we had paid true 5 star money and expected 5 star, as advertised, we would have been disappointed! The room - we were upgraded to a pool view and we really enjoyed the decor and spaciousness of the room. The room is showing signs of wear and tear, in particular, the laminate flooring has started to come up, particularly in the bathroom, and is quite sharp in some places - making the complimentary slippers necessary! I did inform reception of this on check out, as this is an accident waiting to happen. We did have one evening in which our room had a leak and had to spend the night in another room. This room had hard wood floors and was in better condition. It was also OK a second floor, meaning it had more natural light which we would have preferred. Maintenance seems to be needed in other areas of the hotel too - the restaurant and pool bar looks tired, lots of broken umbrellas and the deck boards around the pool entrance needs refurbishment. The breakfast was substantial, eggs however you like, fresh fruit, yoghurt, pancakes, waffles, toast, pastries, salads and Thai food. Having stayed in other 5 stars across Asia, I do feel that is wasn't on par and would again have been disappointed had we have paid more! Likewise, the food at the restaurant was also disappointing. The pizzas and club sandwich for lunch was nice enough, but the one night we had dinner on the beach and the food was the worst we had all holiday. There are plenty of great restaurants within walking distance, or a short taxi ride away, and I would definitely recommend you check what's highly rated on TA so that you don't miss out. Service - this is a tricky one, because when served, everyone was so friendly and warm, however there did seem to be a lack of attentiveness and small things would frustrate you after a while. For example, some mornings you would be offered tea or coffee fairly quickly, other mornings we would be waiting up to 10 minutes whilst staff were chatting or standing around. Staff would take your plate away, although wouldn't offer more cutlery (which would be annoying when you would go for your second course and realise you've got nothing to eat it with). Again, throughout the day, once you caught someone's attention or went to the bar, service was friendly, although to be true 5 star, more attentive service is needed and for staff to be walking around the sun loungers and asking customers if they would like a drink/food. Drinks and food are really reasonably priced, particularly the 3 hour Happy Hour, 3-6pm offering 2 for 1 cocktails, making them around £2 a cocktail! They were generally very nice too! The spa was also fantastic. I had 4 massages in total, one of which was with my husband, making the most of the promotional 1 hour for 600 baht (around £12/£13 - bargain)!! Both therapists were fantastic. I have a very bad back from a car accident and the techniques they used gave me relief beyond any massages I've ever had at home! Thoroughly recommend! Despite all the niggles mentioned above, we had a lovely time at Muang Samui. It was well located, we enjoyed walks along the beach every day and the setting of the hotel, in it's oasis of plants makes it a truly relaxing experience. If you can get a good price don't hesitate to book, just make sure you take plenty of mosquito spray! …
