I found the Chateau purely by chance when searching for somewhere to stay that same night near Salbris. What a find! The photo looked amazing and it was even better in reality. A beautiful, original hunting lodge built in mid 1800s in the Anglo Norman style by a rich French industrialist. It was remarkably original and has been restored sympathetically... More

This is a very difficult place to rate because it's so unusual. The host, Dominique is a semi-retired doctor who has been restoring the property since he bought it 20 years ago. When we first arrived, we were greeted by two enormous parrots in the window of the castle. We stayed in one of the stand-alone, self-containted cottages which was perfect as we have a 1.5 year old. If you go to France to visit les Chateaux de la Loire (i.e., Chambord), or to go hunting or horseback riding in the Sologne Region of France, you need to find a place to stay. This chateau is now functioning as a "chambre d'hote" as the French call it. B&B doesn't seem quite adequate to describe it. The chateau is a delightful building, a fairtytale for Americans who aren't used to architecture such as this.
