We stayed at the Hotel Matsuzaka for four nights in March 2023. What a gem of a place this is. Firstly we had to change our booking at short notice and Faye and Mike, the owners, could not have been more flexible in accommodating us. When we eventually arrived we received a genuinely warm welcome. The friendliness and warmth from this lovely couple continued throughout our stay. Our spacious room and en-suite bathroom were Japanese themed with lovely furnishings. The view from our balcony was breath-taking. We used the Japanese spa after skiing. A wonderful experience - more calming and relaxing than other spas/hot tubs we have used. There is a garage where we were able to park our car at no extra charge. Ski storage facilities are good and the hotel is in a great location. Then there's the food - the best we have experienced whilst on a skiing holiday. The 3-course evening meals were a fusion of western-style dishes using Japanese ingredients, with amazing presentation. We felt as if we were eating in a Michelin starred restaurant every night. Breakfasts were amazing too, a huge selection of food and beverages to choose from, including a good old pot of English breakfast tea (Yorkshire tea to be precise). This hotel is extremely good value for money and we can't thank Faye and Mike enough for making our stay so enjoyable. They provided us with tips on the best areas to ski and places to visit. We highly recommend this wonderful hotel and will definitely be back. Thank you Faye and Mike!

I loved staying in Chalet Matsuzaka ! Surprises await you at every turn. From the view from your balcony to the view of the Pury Mountain range in front of your eyes as you savor your breakfast to the comfortable beds to the Japanese soaking pools apres-ski.. honestly, it's a restorative and soothing pause from everyday life. I miss the fresh air! The hosts Faye and Mike are wonderful and they help you ski correctly to Italy! Also, the meals are sain and yummy. Faye's a great cook and Mike and helper serve and keep the wine pouring :) Can't wait to go back ! My son loved it too..

You really feel like home at the shalet. Very friendly and cosy atmosphere. We will surely recommend it to our friends. Very nice and sybstetial breakfast and well balanced dinner at your disposal. A ten minute walk to the lift in the morning will help you to get awaken before skiing.

We stayed at this wonderful chalet for our first family skiing holiday. Mike and Faye welcomed us with such warmth and kindness. They went out of their way to help us sort out all we needed for a truly fantastic holiday on the slopes. One of our group is disabled and a permanent wheelchair user and the chalet worked perfectly for our needs. It was spacious and homely. The rooms were generously sized, clean and well appointed. The large bathrooms had both baths and showers and double basins. The owners were happy for us to bring our own specialist equipment, but could also hire items in if needed. The rather lovely spa with an indoor and outdoor pool was a welcome treat after a day on the slopes. Breakfast and supper were generous and imaginative, with attentive and friendly service. We can’t praise this chalet enough and will happily recommend it to others. Thank you for all your top tips, fantastic local knowledge and help throughout our stay and beyond with your assistance for our return journey.

I don't often write reviews but felt the need to as Mike and Faye run this lovely Chalet fantastically and provide a beautiful home from home experience. They made my 2 boys and I feel very welcomed and tended to all our needs. Breakfast was lovely and I really enjoyed the afternoon coffee and cakes after a days out skiing. The Japanese spa was a hit - sitting in a heated outdoor heated floor level large tub surrounded by the snow was surreal and worked a treat for the aching post ski muscles. We had dinner one evening at the Chalet which was great and ate out the other days from recommendations made by Mike and Faye. Thank you so much for making our stay special and we will certainly return. Saj

I stayed there two nights in August, and was sad to leave. It's a great boutique hotel. For the price range (ca. €200/night in summer, and more than 400€/night in winter for a basic room if I'm not mistaken), the rooms themselves are OK. I've seen better, even though the view is splendid, as expected in La Rosière. What makes the place unique and so enjoyable is the atmosphere of the common areas, as well as the kindness and personality of the owners. The breakfast / dinner room is nice and comfy, with, again, great views. The food - both breakfast and dinner - is very good and entirely satisfactory. Having the outdoor spa for yourself during a thunderstorm after a day outside... very nice. The owners are exceptional, in the sense that they make you feel both an important person and a friend. Congratulations for such a first-rate service, both classy and warm. Plus, they can tell you all sorts of interesting stories about Japan, where they lived for many years. Bravo, et merci!

Response from Matsuzaka, Owner at Chalet Matsuzaka
Responded Aug 24, 2018
Thank you so much for your lovely comments - it is always a real pleasure to have this sort of feedback and what we strive at all times to achieve. A point regarding the price of our standard bedroom (the type Hayashi 30m² south facing double room with terrace and views), we would like just to restate that the cost with breakfast and spa access included in summer has been this summer, 115€/night to a maximum of 145€/night (booking directly can take this down by another 10% due to the commissions we have to pay to 3rd party sites like Booking and Expedia etc.). In the winter this room has a price of between 145€/night to 390€/night depending on the week, averaging normally 225€/night (again with breakfast, spa and garage included with discounts possible for direct bookings). An equivalently sized room in other (next door) hotels but north facing without views, nor garage nor balcony, range from 240€ to 460€, rising to 560€ if a view is wanted. We do try to keep our prices set at a reasonable level but understand that they reflect the limited season of opening, the international ski area, the high altitude and exceptional location of La Rosiere 1850. Again, thank you so much for your comments, they mean a lot to us.

Chalet Matsuzaka is an excellent blend of Japanse and French style. The Japanse bath, which is included in the rates, has open access at certain hours but can also be booked privately for 30 minutes. The bath makes the chalet really special. Massages (at the chalet) can be booked via a partner. The rooms are spacious and clean. There are ten rooms only and the service is very personal. Faye and Mike know their customers by name, are very helpful and make you feel at home. The lobby and dining room are cozy with both Japanese and ski decorations. Diner, for hotel guests only, offers a choice between Japanese or French dishes. Quality is excellent, with Shabu Shabu on my last night as the ultimate experience. This was a special treat and could also be raclette, depending on the number of guests. This is definitely a place to keep on the bucket list. Les Echerts is a nice little corner of La Rosière. The two are connected by a forest path (20 minutes walk).

This chalet is a great base to explore La Rosiere and Les Eucherts. The chalet is spacious and modern and the rooms have a lot of space relative to others we have stayed in. Mike and Faye are brilliant and will sort anything you request, even for fussy kids! We stayed in room 6 with our 4 year old son and even with the spare bed there was plenty of space to walk around and also keep our 2 big suitcases. The room has a balcony with a stunning view over the valley and mountains. There is a kids game room at the end of the corridor which has table football, an electric piano, a TV and some games consoles... This is a little haven for the kids (and parents) at dinner time. Downstairs there is a large lounge dining area with some sofas and then the dining tables. The food was excellent throughout the stay. There is an indoor and outdoor Japanese Rotemburo which is basically a huge very hot bath, perfect for soaking after a day skiing. We were worried it may be too warm for the kids but they were fine with it. A quick roll in the snow cooled them down when required. Massages are available in the chalet, another great addition! The walk to the lifts takes only 5 minutes and the facilities for smaller children are great. There is a conveyor belt for the complete beginners and then also a small button lift when they progress. Both of these are available without a lift pass so great if you are not sure how they will enjoy it. The walk to La Rosiere is around 10 minutes through a beautiful forest pathway, plenty of areas for sledging and snowball fights and again La Rosiere is well set up for families. We rented a sledge for the week which cost around €25, well worth it for dragging tired children back from the slopes! All in all another great stay here and will be back again hopefully soon!
