Bess and Gregory have made their property from scratch over some 30 years. There are beachfront cottages with kitchens and living areas. Everything is beautiful and their heart and soul has gone into this dream. The beach is out your backdoor and down a short private walkway. Breakfast is provided with fresh juice and homemade yogurt and cookies. Kayaks and paddle boards are provided if interested. We spent three days in heaven. It’s only 20 minute drive to town and shopping. BBQ grills provided for cooking in if you desire. Gem of a spot!
Can’t say enough about this place - the cabins are well appointed and comfortable - lovely view- the breakfast basket exceeded all expectations Wonderful grounds and beach setting. Great hosts. Probably our favourite stay during a month’s visit to New Zealand.
There is nothing we would have changed about our experience at Adrift! Beachfront cottage with beautiful accessible beach for swimming, shell collecting, taking long strolls. Cottage was spacious and well-appointed. Daily hamper of breakfast ingredients delivered to door. Really delicious selections. Hosts, Bess and Gordon, so welcoming and ready for conversation. We loved our stay at Adrift in Takaka!
We recently completed a nine day stay at Adrift in Golden Bay in a Beach View Cottage, and have booked a ten day stay for February 2020. Our cottage had a lovely garden and was totally private. Our friend, Frank, rented the studio next to the main house with a direct view of the ocean. While our cottage had a whirlpool tub with shower over the tub, the studio had a shower. This place is wicked convenient: Less than a two hour drive from Nelson Airport and equidistant from the three main hiking areas: Farewell Spit/Wharareki Beach, Kahurangi and Abel Tasman National Park. Wharariki Beach is just 44 mins while Totranui, a major camping base in Abel Tasman National Park is just over an hour. If you are near to Totranui stop in at Totos pizza on the way out and have a treat in the only pizzeria I know that is made of cob! Takaka, the main hub in Golden Bay, is just 17 minutes away with loads of eating places. Our favorite, which we visited four times is Roots Bar, which has the best burgers on the planet. We recommend ordering the Mobi Burger with Haloumi cheese. It’s a vegetarian patty with kumara, quinoa, black beans etc. We washed this down with a pint of Sprig and Fern Scotch ale on tap. This ale is full of flavor and has a 5.7% abv. Takaka has a very good supermarket called Fresh Choice. Arriving from the airport, we stocked up with cheese, chocolate and oranges for our hikes and a few bottles of Riesling and Gewurtztraminer. In New Zealand these wines are called aromatics, which is exactly what they are - extremely flavorful. There are at least two gas stations in Takaka. Try filling up during the day, because after hours you will need a pin for your credit card. Adrift Breakfasts hit the spot. We love the idea of being able to select, and have delivered the night before, a continental or English breakfast hamper. We cooked up scrambled eggs, tomato and mushrooms with the butter provided and used the very tasty sourdough ciabatta rolls for our lunchtime sandwiches on the trail - a great savings of time, energy and money. On days we were at Roots Bar, we doggy bagged half the burger for lunch and skipped the rolls. At Adrift, we especially liked the underfloor heating in the bathroom, bath robes and the layout of bedroom, sitting room and bathroom. Dining We recommend Roots Bar in Takaka for burgers or the Mussel Inn, 3 km from Adrift, for mussels or vegetarian lasagna. Hiking We discovered Wharariki Beach and did three hikes there. It is probably one of our two favorite day hikes in the world. It has it all - seals playing in tidal pools, caves, awesome views including one from a cave of Archway Islands, which is used by Microsoft in Windows X. We recommend entering the beach by the Green Hills route. (11 on DOC map) rather than the Wharariki entrance (10 on DOC map) - this hike will take about two hours. Our second don’t miss hike is in the Abel Tasman Park from Wainui Car Park to Separation Point and back (about six hours). We also did two other hikes from Totranui - north to Separation Point and South to Waiharakeke Beach. Days off If you are exhausted from hiking, there is kayaking or walking on the beach. If it rains you can watch DVDs in the sitting room. Adrift is in our top five best places to stay on the planet. The others being Tswalu in the Kalahari Desert, MalaMala in the Sabi Sands, Villa San Michele in Ravello and Quilalea in Mozambique.…
You want to settle in and never leave. A beautiful building, one of 5,each with a bedroom, living room, big bathroom with a whirlpool tub and a complete kitchen, all facing the gardens and the beach. The provisions for breakfast all carefully chosen and delicious, the owners delightful, the beach a stones throw away. Although we booked months before we still did not get one of the prime view houses as I gather they are booked a year ahead! Perhaps the best and most beautifully situated self catering place we stayed in during all our weeks in NZ.
