This is an enjoyable place to stay if you desire a small family environment. The town is nice and the fact one can go clothing optional when desired is awesome. Paul is constantly looking for ways to improve the space. During special events Paul sets up events to do as as a group allowing one to learn from and meet... More

Hands down one of my favourite hostels I've stayed in during my travels around NZ! Paul, the owner, is incredibly generous and welcoming. He's helpful with planning, giving advice (especially about cycle touring) and just generally having a pleasant convo with. Beds are super comfy, big kitchen, big lounge area and outdoor space. Rachel the dog is glorious too. The... More

Word of mouth brought me to this place. Rachel, the owner, and her friend Paul are great hosts. The atmosphere is very family-style, its difficult to not integrate with the other patrons. The kitchen is great. The beds are comfortable. There are bicycles for loan. Golden bay is lovely. I recommend this hostel over the others in town.

I really love this place! I stayed here for 4 weeks and I liked it very much! Paul (the owner) knows everything about Takaka and he wants to help you with everything. That's so nice! And he has a jacuzzi, so relaxed! Go to this place!

Gazebo is an amazing place to stay in Takaka. It's a cool and relaxed place. It is not a big place and you can feel comfortable there, like at home. Paul has great stories and gave me good information about Golden Bay. I want to comeback with more time. Thanks!

What a great place, but be warned...its hard to leave- we only came for 1 night and ended up staying nearly a week!! It may not be a big, new and modern hostel- but it has something that you can not buy- atmosphere, feels like you've been there for ever. Paul's done a great job creating this unique home away... Paul has really made an awesome home away from home for his guests! This place made me smile and feel good after days of big city run of the mill hostels. I feel like I have gotten back to myself and it just took one night at this wonderful place! Definitely check it out!

I recently had the pleasure of staying with Paul (and Rachel, his adorable, loving dog) at Gazebo Backpackers for three weeks. A backpackers in name, this place quickly feels like home. Paul provides full access to the kitchen--pots, pans, spices, the works!--a cozy indoor living room (great for watching movies), a shaded outdoor patio for reading or yoga, and lush... More

Nice garden. You share the owner house. Living room with a big tv and video games. Double room comfortable. Kitchen well equipped but not so much space for cooking. There is only one shower for everyone and that is not enough at all (we were 10). Above all : deplorable cleanliness. A positive point : free and fast internet. The... More
